View Full Version : Modeling: Attaching Surfaces/Getting Rid Of Seams
I have been following the gnomon DVDs and am doing #3 Nurbs modeling. Below is an image of the front of the car that I am modeling. I have 3 different surfaces and am having problems with tangency between the surfaces. How can I attach these surfaces or how can i make these 3 different surfaces appear as just one?

have you tried the square tool ? - if your surfaces are 3 or 4 sided square will take care about tangency
if square is not an option you could rebuild your curves and loft or bi-rail them
With that in mind, does that mean that it can not be done with the geometry I have in place allready?

as you have a trimmed surface you can't attach it as it is
if you have a tangency problem improving tesselation won't fix it
from the image i can't figure out much - to me it seems you could easily rebuild the surfaces but i could be wrong
have you tried to align the surfaces ? ( Edit NURBS > Align Surfaces)

you could extract some surface isoparms (the red lines in my image) - align the resulting (vertical) curves - then square or bi-rail them
maybe post a little scene file if you need more help
Thanks for all the help guys, I am going to try to attach the scene file and maybe you guys could explain how to do handle this problem.
You can DL the scene fileHere (http://grafxdezignz.homestead.com/files/gp_Race2.5.mb)

i think your fillet was basically fine - i think i misunderstood you - i somehow ignored that you said you want to get rid of the seam - so you were talking about the rendered scene?
i tuned the tesselation of the three surfaces but even with high tesselation i couldn't get totally rid of the seam - possibly my fault
instead i rebuilt the lower two surfaces using the square tool from curves i extracted from the existing surfaces - it was easy to get rid of any seams by tuning the tesselation a little
if you need the modified scene i'll e-mail it to you
here's a little test showing the rebuilt surfaces
Thats it, Thats what i was looking for...
Can you email me a brief of what exactly you did. I sort of understand the square you mentioned but not sure exactly which curves you mean you extracted....any help is much appreciated...
**Edit**
After taking a guess at what curves you extracted i did a square on both bottom surfaces but i still have a seam between the two pieces of geometry...Maybe i am doing something wrong here... I didn't know what you meant by tweaking the tesselation either so that could be an issue as well.

i pm'ed you - but here's what i did for the archives
i just duplicated the boundary curves of the lower to surfaces with edit curves -> duplicate surface curves - and then starting with the bottom surface i used the square tool - when you use the square tool on the second surface be sure to select the bottom edge by dragging the red line along the first surface - history must be turned on i think for this to work - that's it - then i set advanced tesselation for all three surfaces - i think to u and v set to 16
the advanced tesselation section is in your attribute editor when you select a nurbs surface
