Hey,
I'm also a beginner to combustion, but I know you must either apply the particles to a new (solid w/ transparentcy) layer or an existing piece of footage. Once you select the particle type from a library then go to tools menu and add a emitter to the screen (point, line, circle or area). It takes a lot of playing with the settings to get just what you want usually, but it's much easier to start with a canned library then from scratch!
Hope that helps.

..or save your strength and use some other particles engine ;)
Imo Comb's prarticle tool could use some severe updating

hi,
its not that difficult though, what u have to do is go to operators or right click the layer u wanna add the particles and select particles.
doubl click on the particles operator u just added and u'll see the particle library.choose any particle and selct an emeter in the tools menu (single point, line, square points) and click once or multiple times.
make sure u create it in the starting frame. otherwise u have to go to the time line and adjust it. go to the particle's parameters and adjust preload frames so u can view the particle rather than scrubbing the time line.
cheers.
