Ok, back story is I'm using Maya 7, and modeling a high res car (my second, first was done with a tutorial, so I'm kinda new to the car modeling thing).

Anyways, Check out this RX8 grill mesh..

Would you use a displacement map to recreate this? I remember seeing a gnomon tutorial on how to fake transparency shadows without raytracing, and I think that had something to do with turning a displacement into polys. Would that be a solution worth going for? I'm not looking to hold back on polys, I plan on going Sub-D with it in a day or two. Any help would be apprecaited, right now I have a hole there.

Thanks for any help.

I would just model it as a flat plane, then when you come to texturing use a transparency map for the gaps and a suble displacment map to add a tiny bit of depth to the grill

Thanks for the input. I tried it and I think it will work out fine. I applied a map to the specular to hide shinyness in the gaps but I dont think it worked 100%, so I'll have to fix that. I also think the gaps are too narrow as of now. This was more of a test to see if it would work, still got some tweaking to go.
