Hi all!
I am trying to make a forest and i want it to look good. What do you say? Bad or ok?

I think the leaves of the trees are not good but i don't know how i can make it better. When you have some ideas please post them. C&C Are welcome :) :D

Thx for helping!

i no what you mean when it comes to making trees, i always find them an git.

So heres a quick way of making effective looking trees. Make a trunk using box modelling, make it as complex as you want. then amke a cluster of leafs using an opacity map.
Then using a particle cloud add as many as you need for the tree to take shape, each using the cluter as leafs each using the cluster as its partcle type.

Ive attached this image which should make more sense.
top image box model trunk with particle clouds

mid image cluster of leafs.

bottom image final tree image.

Its a good method as you dont really need the leafs to be attached to the tree as you have so many, its more of an illusion. Hope this helps. :buttrock:

Nice lighting in the scene by the way.

Sorry for the small image

Thank you for your help wolfy2525! I will try this and post the picture as fast as i can (must got to the dentist today))

Maximus Groff:I am using 3DStudio Max 4. I have made a volume light and blocked the rays with a particles. Than you can see this!

I am alive! ;)

Hey wolfy2525 when i use your methode the render time is very high and i can't see if it works. Do you know why it is so slow?

Are you just using the standard default renderer??? I didnt mention before the leafs are a simple plane 4x4 with a bend modifer on it. I know that my tree only took about 5 seconds to render, if you use brazil its far to long???

Let me know the outcome?????:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

I am using the standard default render.

Now i don't have the problem any more, it is faster now, don't know why ;) .

I am trying now to use brazil or another render.

i really like what you have done. I take it your doing the leafs how i sugessted if so ive noticed a problem with them that they dont seem to look like leafs. SO make a cluster like my image in my first post, i ve used a standard material from the max maps the leaf and opacity map are in there.

So in the diffuse slot you need the pic of the leaf.
Then go down to the maps rollout, then go down to the opacity and apply the opacity map there.

Make the cluster into a group.

Then you make a particle cloud.
go to particle type
you want it on instanced geometery

under instance parameters click the box pick object then click your
cluster
the word clusters group name should apperar next to the word object.

check the box use subtree also.

then just below this click the box get material from.

that should set up the particle cloud

You may need to alter the particle size and thats in particle generation.

As as many as you need to make a nice tree shape.

as for brazil its up to you if you want to use it, yes it adds a really nice depth to the image and cuts down on the amount of lights you need to use, but the rendering time will increase like you would belive.

But if you do want to use brazil hes the setup that i use.

Under the rollout brazil image sampling
min samples 2
max sample 2

under the brazil raysever
check all 3 boxes

then under the brazil luma server

check the boxes
sky light which is undetr the direct illumination
then check the boxes enable and sky light under indirect illumination

then adjust it the spinner under environment setting to about 1.2, this is really up to you on how bright or dark you want the gi to be
then adjust the colour box next to it to a colour/tint you want the image to have, a really white yellow should simulate sun light.

Ok then i think thats brazil setup.
I usally have one or two direct light on about .2 in the scene. then if you want volumetric then add, but i find when using volumetric light i like to exclude everything. Hope this helps a little more.

As i said at the beging its looking like a really nice image.

Ok now i like the lightning ;)
But i can't understand why the leaves not work :( it takes a lot of time to render the picture... and when i hope it would start my computer had an error , the rendering time is very long and i have done everything like you said ... maybe i have found the mistake and now it works, but now i have to go to bed and can't test it.

It's nice! but the wood looks to new i think, the spikes are disformed and all and the wood is still new. That should be older i think :) And more things on the grass would be nice, some stones or something..

Keep it up!!!! :buttrock:

The grass is too uniform. Add some character and history to it. I would definately recommend spending a little bit of time doing some research and dig up some inspirational references. Like this pic. You can find tons of images on stock photo sites like www.corbis.com
I always like to hit that site and get inspired before I start a new project.

Sorry guys was not online for 2 days and no time to work. Thx for comments! Now i am back.
I have a new problem, brazil didn't render the opacity. I used now the normal render.

The brazil picture was made before the "normal" one.

make sure that you dont make the map into a 2 sided one if your using the beta version of brazil, it does something very weird indeed. The image is looking nice though.
