I am hoping some one can help me sort this one out.

I kind of have 2 questions, I post here in texturing and surfacing becuase that is my first question.

Please take a look at the attached Image. I have created a JPEG image of the front of a viagra box and mapped it onto the image as you can see. Positioning etc is fine. My problem is the text though. Can some one please explain why the text is not very clear or readable. While I know it's small text I thought it would be clearer than that. The JPEG is high resolution.

Secondly (more appropriate to rendering). In this scene the box will be pushed onto screen by a character I have modelled. I wish the entire screen to be white for the exception of the box being pushed and the character. I'd like to see some reflection on the white floor also but not a full reflection (I hope this makes sense), like a blured fall off reflection.

I am brand new to modelling, texturing and rendering so if yout could put it in a way I would understand and be able to follow it would be greatly appreciated.

PS. I would like to keep rendering time to a minimum thus using the scanline default renderer.

Cheers to all who read and help.

Hi there Tezler,
Viagra box eh? My e-mail inbox filling up with dozens of Viagra spam every day. Hope this is not a commercial LoL. :)
Anyway, about your questions...

Can some one please explain why the text is not very clear or readable.

I think this can be fixed with anti-aliasing setting. (Sampling Quality in Mental Ray)

I'd like to see some reflection on the white floor also but not a full reflection

It's pretty easy actually. Make a plane, and apply a white standart material with self illumination to 100. Then apply a raytrace to reflection map, and use Attenuation to limit reflection.

There you go my friend :) Hope this helps.

It's a university project so nothing degrading I assure you :-)

Your becoming a real hero Tughan.

I tried what you said;

1) Firstly when I set the illumination to 100, the floor looks super, bright white, exactly what I am after. Problem is though the reflection is almost washed out, white over. There is no colour coming from the object onto the floor.

2) Also the assentuation no matter what I try in the settings does not seem to limit the reflection.

3) Is there an alternative to the mental ray anti-aliasing for scanline renderer. Trying to save render time so using scanline.

Hahhhaaaa after playing about I changed the ratrace material to use a white color instead of the background and the color comes back in, I see reflections! Looking for a way to blur the reflection a little bit now, maybe slight wave too.....

Still can't solve the text on image problem though.

EDIT: Max crashed I lost the successfull reflection and now I cant re-create. I just wanna cry.

This is driving me crazy. Whats with the rendering quality of this image.

The front of the box has a UVW Map planar. The image is applied using diffuse > bitmap.

And the rendered image looks like well, see attached.

Text blurry and wavey lines, edges.

I must be missing something or have some settings set wrong.

arggggh :scream:

It looks much like an image sampling (anti-aliasing) issue. Read about supersampling in the max help. Basically in the render rollout there is a checkbox for supersampling maps, you'll want it turned on.

That did correct things thank you.
