It is looking good! But i like the first one more. I think the glow looks not real in the second picture.

The first one is better ;)

Hey.. never thought of lava lamps... hehe.. good way..

How many lights ? This scene must have at least 5 lights ...

IMHO the fill light in the 2nd pic needs refinement... the shadow of the whole object has 2 shadows merging...

How is your shader network for the 'lava' ?

Excelent.. very SCI-FI mood... Definitely a must do for portfolio.. ;)

Thanks for the comments :)

Maximus Groff: There are 8 lights in the scene. One specular, one diffuse, one bounced light, one glow light, two points for the lamp, one linear for the wall fill and finally one area for the uplight shadows :). In the second image there is only one light

What do you mean by "shader network"? Its a lightwave image, if that makes it clearer. Is that maya/softimage/max terminology? I suppose I could give the lightwave equivalent (if you explain what you would like to know.

yes... maya terms. heheh

There is so many lightwaver´s around... maybe this software is good afteral.. ;)

Are u high on poly counts for this image ?

Maximus : Not very high. Whole lamp (excluding environ) is subdivide from about 755 polys. Nice when working with cartoony stuff - no real need for high counts.

What all do you want to know about the shader? I have worked a little in maya, so can probably translate (I tend to shy away from software specific terminology though - gets a little convoluted)

Looks kinda ramped by light intensity on 2nd picture - but on the 1st seems like a cool procedural shader..

dunno... :(

whats the trick to get the 1st pic effect ?

Looking good Bug E

I would suggest looking at the scale of the scene. It looks a bit like a dolls house, scale wise. Things like the number of blind sections give that away the most.

I like the metal look on the base of the lamp. Are you planning to put grime in the scene, but that might not be needed depending on the style you are going for.

I like the blue light in the top picture, and if you mixed it with the lighting of the bottom pic, that would be cool. Try and get rid of the blue hot-spot on the blinds. I would see a more dispered, almost incandescent light coming from the lamp.

good stuff. keep it up mister.

LOOKS GREAT, man!

I especially like the lamp's glass... for some reason, when I try to make a glass shader it doesn't really turn out as good as I want it to... Good Work!

The actual "lava" in the first pic is great looking! truely cartoony!
But the second image the lava looks TOO glowy, guess because of the lighting...

Keep it up! How about an animation of the lava? :)

Keep us posted

MAXIMUS:
If you must know - the surfaces are exactly the same in both images. Purely a lighting issue. :) cool hey.

GARETH:
I see what you mean about the hotspot. I guess if i wanted something more hotspotty - it should be more irregular as though it were coming from the lava? no?

And no - no plans for grime or anything. Going for the "airbrushed" look that you sometimes get on crappy basket-ball t-shirts. That deep perspective, somewhat-but-not-wholy-realistic look. Cartoony for sure.

SOUNDWAV_ :
I have actually animated the lava already (did it before I went mucking about with the scene), just need to do a full render. Not sure what I want to do with the camera at this stage though. Maybe a soft jib or something.

What I don't like in the 1st picture is that the awning is too much light in contrary to the power of the lamp.
The glass effect is really good.

Hmm. Slightly fewer responses than I was hoping for, but the ones I got are super helpful :). Thanks guys.

Commander Falk, I agree about the light. Had a similar comment from fxgogo (although he specifically said the specular hit was too large). Will try make it more real. Its a fake anyway :).

say-g, its gonna stay toony :). Thats my style ;-) Thanks for saying though .

chi, I really like the second one aswell, but as a purist, I have to save it away and use the mood for something else. I kinda got it by accident, and it isn't what I was going for. I think I might combind the two slightly though, if that makes you smile :)

I might even update soon...
