Just wanted people to way in on the differences of modeling packages, which ones they thought were better and or the ones they use and that packages advantages. I currently use MAYA the most, but have started learning XSI, Zbrush. I would like to know what Silo, 3dSMAX, C4D, MODO, and any other software have to offer. Hear Silo is doing big things with its next rendition, and that clay tools may be a viable package. I guess it all depends on pref really. thanks

Dear Scott,

you are walking on a minefield! This kind of questions sometimes cause big arguments.
I'll be extremely diplomatic and say ..... it depends.
;)
Try a bit a of everythig, whenever possible, and make up your mind.
And, of course, come back frequntly to this forum and read the posts to find out more.
Good luck
Monica

damn, for some reason, I thought I paid for my membership, guess I opted for the cheap way in. images/icons/icon10.gif

Anyways, I'm using lightwave and I'm loving it. But I just feel very alone with all this maya and 3dstudio talk. I tried maya once, and it's just confusing trying to guess what all those icon buttons do. In Lightwave, all the buttons are label so you know what exactly it does, or atleast have an idea what it does so that you can experiment with them later. I hope I'm not the only for my own sake, but I do think that Lightwave is just so much more user friendly, and more to the point with things.
However, I'm guessing Maya, like all things, just needs some getting used to.

Every package will take time to get used to if you're familair with another. As far as modeling packages go the best answer you're going to get is to "Try them all". We're all different so we'll like using different applications for certain tasks. Personally I use Silo and Zbrush for my organic work and I'll mix Silo and Modo for more hard surface style modeling but that's just me. Silo is not better then Maya as Maya is no better then Silo depending on who's using them...see where I'm going with this? :)

I'll say abit more.

Max has an excellent poly modeller, so has Lightwave. Maya is, in my opinion, really good but with a different philosofy that some people find difficult to deal with (I am personally fine with it). Zbrush is for sculptoring (well, maybe a bit of a syntetique description for such an great package...) and modo is to try, it's getting very successfull.
Soo..... all very good, using different approaches. try try try :)
