Well here is the start of my journey. the concept is that the journey is accross the Mojave desert. The journey is being done with the help of our trusty roadrunner. (I just wanted to do a flightless bird that runs fast since thsi is in miniature a roadrunner is quite appropriate. This is a very rough sketch. I hope the modeling turns out fine. I have done a few theropod dinosaurs. The rider might be a bit more of a challenge and I need to flesh out what she looks like.

Hope to have some more updates soon off to model. I am using Wings 3D for modeling and Bryce 5.5 for rendering.

Well thought this would stir a bit more interest than my terrible sketch. This is a Gila Monster a poisionous reptile that lives in the American southwest. The texture on it is shiny beaded surface that is red orange and black. This will be an element in the picture a possible future antagonist. Gila monsters are up to half a meter long. I'll put up some wires if there is an interest. I still need to sketch out the main character concept in more detail.

Well a bit of progress on the main character. Began modeling the head. I have only done human heads for a short while. So if you spot soemthign obvious tell me. This head is mroe of a character head though. I am intentionally making a weak chin and big lips large eyes. Basing it on a random person I saw the other day thought she had an interesting face.

Well a bit more about my challenge. There are little people who live in the Mojave desert. They live in carved out cacti. They domesticated whe swift roadrunner to ride and they eat small lizards and assorted desert plants.
I am going for a slightly toonish look. I am actually spending some time studying the flora and fauna of the mojave desert to get a better idea of what to model.I have a cacti or two ready too.

i like your idea.... people say eye is the window of soul so i think you have to pay more attention to the eye detail because at this rate his eye's not looking so alive:) , .good luck and keep on going:buttrock:

I think you are right my wife said they are cow eyes. I really have problems getting the tear ducts right. I really only just began doing people last month I did one that was not ready for the trash can. The Gila monster looks a bit unrefined but the actual creatures are sort of a blob themselves. I am working up the home in a barrell cactus. I think reducing the reflectivity in the eyes might help some. I am actuall somewhat happy with the skin texture since I am on the low end of the software spectrum it looks ok. The hat texture is a placeholder I plan on working up soemthing a bit different but keet with the same idea sort of a desert version of the union hat of the american civil war.

Well did some work on the cactus home. I now want to get back the the face and do some touch ups around the eyes.

se7enthcin Thanks for the comment. I have not been down that way yet. ( I am an American ex-patriot living in China)
terminus_ad_quem I really looked at the head there I agree toatally. I was stupid and did not save the rough mesh(only smoothed) . So it looks like I will have a redo. I liked the texture on the face there. I will keep the hat geometry.

Well did soem testuring on the gila monster. I have a shader driving the bump channel and a painted texture for the color channel. It is fairly close but I think I could do a bit more. The Gila monster has a beaded skin texture and almost looks like he is made from corn.
I am readoing the entire head for the character and that should be up shortly. I remodeled and restextured the old one is scrapped. Mostly due to my lack of foresight. I made the original head and failed to save the unsmoothed mesh so there was a bit too many control points to worry about to get it right.

Well worked on two different head for the project. th si is actually for soemthign else bu tI liek the character for it so I think I will go with it. I might want to render without the googles next. Have been sidtracked as of late. I really need to figure out how to do good eyebrows because I think these are not good. Might try them without the transmap maybe that will be better

I would suggest that you think about your compostion more for the moment and get the elements roughed out.
I would put the rider on the road runner and the gila in the foreground. Have the rider swerving slightly to avoid the monster. the camera low by the gila, looking up. That way you get a tight shot of the action, the scale of the characters, and in the background the vastness of the area.
