Hello all,

Working on concept for short animation.
Concept is about a female prisoner of war sent to Rome where she becomes a gladiator.

Over time she slowly goes crazy but because she is so popular they keep her alive in a cage
guarded by four praetorian guards.

Here is (so far) the design of the guards

I will most likely add more detail to the shield.

My main worry is that she doesn't look tough enough.

Anyway, enough from me.
Comments and critiques from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

You are right she does not look tough. I think that it has more to do with her face she does not seem determined enough to kill. Pay special consideratio to the eyes , her illustration is very good but the right expression is not there. You do not have to make her look ungry just give a slight expression to the eyes and maybe eyebrows which will show how dangerous she is. For example keep the head posing down but the eyes facing the viewer and use a more dramatic pose. I think that you need a bit more muscle in the hand feet and maybe kneck. Keep up the good work :thumbsup:

i agree on the eyes. if you squinted them a bit more and maybe and 'angered' the eyebrows it'd be nice. the girl's concep-t sketch, looks like the right side of the torso could come in a bit more, and the neck is a little too long. dunno if you were looking for crit on the drawing or not. the second girl looks great ^_^

The problem here is not that the face is not good enought. As a matter of fact the lighting is very good the texturing is very good and the face looks to me very much alive. It makes me wonder who she really is , there is a mystery in her face and kindness in her eyes. I know she is not a gladiator, I mean she could have been but that is not the face of a gladiator or a person which killing is her proffession. The big expressive eyes the small shy mouth and nose the gentle kneck is a stereotype of a spritual woman , I woman who loves to read and have a good conversation, maybe she is an artist or just a woman who have been in a lot of trouble in her life. Actually the scars and the frown is the only things that I think that they do not fit in. Even the messy hair are actually suitable for this character who seems like a woman who thinks beauty is always dwelling inside not on the skin.

This is a critic based on your latest image. What you could do in this case is maybe change the scenario to a woman who was forced to be a gladiator against her will. Thus give her a more sad face and pose.

This is already not a nice but a very good picture so do not worry about that. :thumbsup: May I ask you how you are going to animate it, is there a specific way and/or software you are going to use. :)

kilon- Thanks. Found crits most useful especially because my animation will only show her before the fight which will make it very important to get the face and attitude right. And you are right because all i really did was add scars on top of everything in the hope it might completely change the feel. Nevertheless it is mostly good modeling, texturing and lighting that i want to try to demonstrate rather than the animation so its nice to hear im doing ok in that area.
To answer your last question all 3D work will be done in Maya. Modeling will start very soon.

I find that if you want to make a woman look tough you add a bigger nose and some heavy armor. Darken her skin more add a lttle more eye shadow. Gladiators don't wear eyeshadows but who knows maybe in this case it'll work out fine. the cuts are a good touch though. A wider jaw, more like a manlier face, too round makes her look too cute.

The skin and the lips on the girl look incredible, I don't really have any tips or critiques, but I would like to ask how you did the skin, especially on her upper cheeks, I love the freckles they look great.

Btw this is done in PS 9. i just used the regular soft brush with flow of about 1-5%. on a few layers i filled the face with spots of differing sizes, colours, and opacities with the help of the scattering and size jitter etc in the brush attributes. Then I could adjust the opacity of the layers themselves to further control the overall strength. Oh, and changing the blend mode of the layer from "normal" to something like "multiply" makes sure that the spots dont appear too strong in the bright highlights over the skin.
