Nice picture. How did you get that face impression on the wall over there. I think if you have a few lanterns on the wall it would look better than just having lights in it. Of cource that is my own opinion
Thanks...
The face in the wall is a head I am modelling,so I just backed it up against the pillar and chucked on the same material :)
The lighting actually consists of spots {sunlight} beaming down through holes or cracks in the roof, and the colored ambience from an unseen fire creating the warm color and glow from behind the top of the stairs and maybe down a passage a bit.
:hmm: lanterns, might play with that idea, although I want to try and keep the lighting dramatic.

You rule, Kiwi!
The fish eye is more distracting than helpful IMO... but I see you included your good ol' dragon. I'm workin on a dragon too! Gotta compete, right? = )
Thanks bud
:D ya gotta compete...hahahaaa.....man I was trawling through all my files for something to chuck in the wall, and the dragon seemed like the best bet :)
Ya ol doofus here forget to change the camera...doh!!! :hmm:
I am going to make another Dragon myself sometime, but I am going to finish my head before taking on another headache just at this stage :D

It's a nice seen with good modeling. I'd work mainly on the lighting. Try somthing with far more contrast. :lightbulb

Looks great Stu
for a bit more drama, it could even do with a bit less lighting I guess?? or some candles or torches maybe??
Maybe some slight fog or PyroCluster smoke just above groudlevel can make it even more mysterious....
Temperal Vision thanks :) .........I kept a non contrast look also make it look a little dusty.
Creart - Thanks bud.Pyro thats a good idea.I might play with some candles or torches or lanterns or something actually :)
How do I make the air look more dusty?,not truckloads dusty though....I have dust in the lights already {1% dust}.

I think you'd need volumetric lighting to get the dusty look a bit more
Otherwise the Pyro or fog with lots of noise, like an SLAFusion of clouds with noise might do the trick??
OOOh ya I have Pralines Bhodi fog.Cant use Pyro because its installed in 8 and I have that card issue :hmm: ....but great ideas there bud....thanx

Pralines Bhodi fog??????
Bhodinuts Praline plugin has a shader called Bodhinut fog.You can adjust the depth of fog, distance of the fog etc etc,a lot more so then the normal fog material channel. Its also brilliant for making depth renders for dof in PS.Not to mention the excellent shaders for reflections and evironment channel materials etc.It is not currently not playing nice with 8 I believe but apparently soon will be updated for use in 8 as well I read somewhere :)

A bit of an update.
I made the spots volumetric and "tried" to use area shadow for my key light, but after 10 hours rendering and being just over half way through the render I changed it back to soft :hmm: ,which only took about an hour after that I think it was.
I also added some color fill in Photoshop to enhance the mood.

I like that last one but I just don't se a cave/corridor having track lighting. Perhaps a gel on the light to emulate cracks. And the volumetrics add a nice touch for sure.

In a way, I can't choose between the two...
Yet, when I enter in this image, I observe two things: the stairsteps and the vertical "wall" are both new, and not worn out, and, from where I stand I get the impression that I'm peeking into a world of gnomes. Don't know of course whether this was your initial idea or not...
Then there's the number of steps too...a person of an avarage height will be as tall as some nine steps. And even gnomes would adapt the steps to their size...
Apart from this, it is a strong composition with lots of details to look at, and it sets my imagination working at full speed...
I see Wotan and Loge descend into the world of the Nibelung, and already hear the music of the hammers. Tangtatatangtatatang tangtatatangtatatang ...
Pity that neither Jenna nor Praline nor Penny work under C8. I do hope Bhodinut will find a solution soon as I miss them...

Wow, very nice  I love the second one the best, me likes volumetric lights. :)
I'm just wondering, do you do your own textures Kiwi?

Hey Stuu!!
the image does look better!! but I'm afraid you will have to go for the long render time - tha normal light now seems to 'bleach' out parts of the image and I think VestanPance is right, you just expect to see rays of light coming in through cracks..
do you have a 'roof' on your model??? if not, just try to put that on, maybe just a couple of polygons with openings inbetween and put a shadowspot outside - and some dimmed light near the end of the cave and see what that does for the image ... and what about the torch???
great work though, bud!!!!
Thanx guys
VestanPance - ya your right about the lighting.I have tried lots of light filtering through cracks, but I just couldnt quite nail it,but I will have another try actually :)
Erik - The steps cheers I wondered what was wrong there, actually I might try something else as well yet,a more miniature aerial type shot.
I have a number of files in 8 which are chocks full of Praline myself bud.
Phasmatis - Yep I am also a fan of volumetric lights.
I make all my own textures in Photoshop and then mix them with SLA sometimes as well, although the sand in the image is an SLA shader I made I think {cant remember if it also contains a tif}.You can make incredible textures with the SLA shaders it just takes a bit of practise to learn some of the tweaks :) The key I find is diffusion.
creart - Cheers,ok more light beams it is,the area light is out though :) In fact I might do some modelling and make a bridge as well etc, maybe a crevasse and re light the whole thing a bit more realistically :)

Now that's what I like about this forum: lots of really good and constructive opinions and criticism.
Happy Winter Solstice to all of you. Winter begins, and the days lengthen. Then Spring Equinox will bring the day as long as the night, just like Fall Equinox. And between these, Summer begins and the days shorten. It's all so beautifully organised...

I thought you did, you're very good at it too. They give your picture a style of their own, I can almost always tell you made a picture before I see your name.
Thanks Phasmatis  ,thats a really cool compliment :D
I was going to give away my SLA only sand shaders that everyone really likes for Christmas, but then they got rid of the ZIP attachments.
