Everyone, in the end is required to pay Charon and pass over the river Styx into the nether-realms. Pay the toll or be lost for eternity. This is a journey that begins after the end of one's life.

What a great idea and concept. Seeing that it is the river Styx, why not have fallen souls reaching out of the river to the boat.

Right Geteken i suggest that too, asbassie the instructions said you should have some kind of small creatures (bugs, Hobbits, Elves, Children, Faeries, birds, animals, micro robots - whatever) just trying to remind you...
keep the good work i realy want to see how you do this with 3D.

I started this one off in Z-brush. Got the mesh to a level more or less what i need and ready to export to Max. In max i'll tweak my model and return to z-brush for finer details. I'll be jumping between these two apps - because it's fun!

Alright this is more like it ... Thanks for the replies, first and foremost. Returning to the classics Kind of happened as a farce...Like where does a journey begin...right.And mostly I am a huge fanatic about anything mythical, magical or unreal. I just didn't want to do the Sci-fi thing again, so like old school stuff feel more pure and uncorrupted - up until it gets played to death, then I just like to get interest myself in a few other directions that's not the norm... now and then we find ourselves reverting and finding out what once was really important to us... So this is it. Sorry for babbling.

hey asbassie!
nice to see you started soms modeling!
I've tried z-brush once but i must say
that modeling a body is a bit out of my
league in that app!
I'm afraid i got about 6 characters in my
work and i'm going to do them in maya.
Perhaps do a little detailling in z-brush.
who knows.
Keep tha updates commin ok !

Nothingness
Nothingness, the only reason I started my model in Z-brush is simply because It's like the fastest way to get a full body mesh...I'll give you a tip that really got me addicted to Z-brush, OK? Here it is : Select the z-sphere tool and create a sphere while holding in shift (this is to keep the sphere right way up while dragging down) then without doing anything or pressing anything select edit. This will allow you to add, rotate, scale, move and simply edit the z-sphere construct. Or create the Z-sphere while holding shift and dragging down then press shortcut T for edit mode. One other cool feature is that by only pressing A you can see and edit in poly mode while still retaining the z-sphere construct, when you're happy with the mesh go to TOOL and press MAKE POLYMESH button... Not out of your league, just really cool to check out tutorials. Plus Z-Brush is like the best compatible software to have...Maya, 3dsmax, whatever... it's all good.
P.s. my apologies if I like overstepped my boundries...I don't mind sharing the love...The absolute and unconditional love for 3D that is.

YEs Yoda said it best, though I can't quite recall what it was he said, but it sure got Luke thinking he could take on the Empire!
I guess it is the fear of the unknown, I'll also take the long way, just because I know I'll eventually get there, even though there is a much easier and faster way to do it.
Probably why Nothingness is doing wat he's doing. Dude if it's time you need, then use Z brush, like the man said.

hey asbassie!
great looking sketch man!
1 remark to the anatomie of the character:
The part of the art between the elbow and the shoulder is too short!
In theory the length of both arms from fingertip to fingertip should be the same length of the character from foot to head!

hey asbassie,
how's the concept comming?
Today, DerbyQsalano pushed me a tid bit into z-brushing and i must say it's fun. I'm not really gonna do like everything in z-brush. I still do the base part in maya.
The only thing is there are some strange things going on at that point.
I get the displ. map but it al gets f** up in maya.
Do you have experience in this?
would be nice
Once that works i can really rely on that. And than the characters will follow shortly.
but if only maya would cooperate

Nothingness : Thanks for the critical eye, I really appreciate it if someone can come out and directly tell me how I may further to improve my work...The work, though, is going really slowly between juggling a job, girlfriend, family and a new cat. I took your advice and fixed the chest up, but I'm not posting so soon again, I really want to get on with the progress...I'm sure it sounds like I'm trying to make excuses, I'm just bummed-out, you know, too little sleep.
SONIC-X : Yeah the South-African have arrived... finally...Nice of you to drop by.
kfc : firstly - thanks for checking out my entry. Mondo thanks for the idea of putting mist in the image, although there is not going to be a sea so much as a vast river wich is situated beyond the land of the living in a great cave of undeterminable depth and darkness... I've not completely let it out of the bag yet...or officially, but the play of depth wil mostly be aquired by the use of darkness and light, which simply implies a lot less atmospheric effects...'cause it's underground...What do you think?
Geteken: Thanks again for showing, the bird accessory is like going to be a pendant type thing...also a lot smaller on the body of the barbarian. Seeing as though, I have so little in the way of characters, I thought that I should add detail by giving the characters more clutter - to sell it a little more that the journey starts here.
Thanks

Seems cool to me. When it's underground, u can play around with lights... and far beyond can be in darkness but somehow still got a little visibility to reveal dangers ahead.

I've seen pieces of art on the afterlife and usually people are naked.

Hi GUYS AND PEOPLE OF THE CG SOCIETY...Feels like I've been dead for a while. Our offices moved and I was completely cut off from the world...You've been busy I see. The whole concept of the dead warrior was suppose to be a man on his way to the great afterlife after meeting his end on the battlefield- therefore everything he has on him goes along...I know I'm mixing up the cultures, but please don't tell me it's a bad thing...Please. Anyway - I've actually made some progress and would love to show you, however I'll only be able to do it when things are comfortable at work again. I am truly thankfull for any responses and I'd like to reply on each one. So...Nothingness - Hanging just fine thanks...I feel really bad that I've missed out on a week of this..my progress is coming.
soapy - On the 3D just waiting for the ideal time to post. And "YES!" you are right he just has to have weapons...just wouldn'tt be cool without them, right?
Zethriel - Like the fact that you like the fact that I like the compliments and hope you like mine. On reply - A warriors honour is linked to not only the way he lived his life but also by the way he died...This guy, although ugly, has his honour. Died amidsts a battle, deserves to take somthing with him I guess... But really on the serious note, I felt that having a simple composition with little charachter might be enhanced if I added more value and details to help give them presence and you know, like, substance. I didn't want it to look like I rushed it and didn't want to make it easy for myself. As for naked "NOOOOOOOOoooo!" I don't wanna see muscular dude buttcheecks or any dude-butts for that matter. I thought of going for a shock tactic, but glad I stuck with what I got...I'm getting really involved with these characters... Death in the theme just creates more atmosphere and you can see it any way you want - It's an image, not written fact or law so it could be two chipmunks if you want them to be. Art is objective, at least that's what I was told.
Zethriel

It's been a while, but I have made some progress. My connection was severed for a while, but I kept on working. As for the progress that I've made - there have been some setbacks. Because I tried to build a animatable model of the barbarian, the garment maker and cloth modifiers were a little tricky, also the first stages were somewhat chalenging - working on an imported OBJ from Z-brush, the mesh had to be modified to suit the purpose of adding a biped structure and obviously I ended up just going overboard. I also like to keep growing on the concept to stay in progress and at the least have reference to follow so I don't lose track. Here it goes.
asbassie
04-04-2006, 02:38 PM
Zethriel - Here are those updates you've been waiting for. Hope you like. Give some crit if you have it.
Eratrioch - Thanks - There will be life soon.
Womgoose - No gushing blood but definitely scars...The scars I thought would be better if I mapped them and not model them...I'll give it a slight indenture but no gashes...Might be he keeps the memory of wounds and not the wounds themselves. I like the last one...Yeah. I mean I like my own scars too. It reminds me of all the dumb things I've persuaded myself to do.
Back to the topic: Maybe normal maps with a lighter healed scartissue around the immediate track. What do you think? Any suggestions?

On this part I had to redefine the hands a lot, so I actually ended up modeling it in Max. I kinda started off backwards and ended up doing the head last, what a mission. After redefining the mesh, getting the basic shape right, I exported back to Z-brush and worked in a few details.

I know, I know - That mesh looks crazy. It completely sucks my PC dry. It's still fun. The rest of the details are also still in process and I'll get to them eventually. Have to update as much as I can now. I'm kinda not looking forward to mapping so I wanna give myself enough time to tweak and test it before the final.

And the weird perspective shot. The modeling of the cloth and other accessories were all done in Max with the use of a few simple shapes and some not so simple methods, in particular the cloth. I really wanted it to have a "real" quality, but I was seriously wasting time and also ended making it from the base shape that I already had.

Hey Juan,
I really like your sketches and drawing style , they convey lots of feeling and I like your concept. I am not that familiar with the story about the river styx but in your concept could you show the destination on the other side of the river?

mmoir - Thanks firstly for stopping by and thanks for the note. I have taken it into account and hope you'll be pleased with the changed result. Actually the story about the river styx goes back a long way with intricate Mythology, speciffically that of the Greeks in ancient times. I actually changed the theme around so as to incorporate what I had in mind for an image. If I had to look at it critically in that way it would have been a greek athlete and a pathetic, anciently old slave with a beard wearing nothing but a daiper. Seems dull to me, plus I'm more interested in the Norwegian, Viking - mythology. I know I kinda combined a lot of modern elements too. I never really thought it through to the finest detail, but I still had some fun making up a backstory to the image. Maybe with the final I'll incorporate it and have more explanations on the whole thing.I thought the destination would sorta be that light you see at the end of the cave. Suposedly The river Styx is to be so incomprehensibly big, so I figured it would never fit in one rendered view, so I had to comprimise cause I can only have the one. All jokes aside. I want it to seem so dark in that cave that it seems to go on forever and the light would turn a part of the river into a destination. I dunno, if there should be a defined destination, it might help to have a few more specific suggestions. Hope your eyes aren't tired.
Mr. mmbenya - I'm honoured to have you visit. Thanks for the great encouragement and sorry... No pirates.

ok, seen your progress some time ago, but it's like now i had some time to even think about not having posted anything here.
Great job on the z-brushing man. I've been doing it as well, but using the displacements in maya is a b****. Anyway, as luck finds it, i won't be using z-brush at all. Depends on the time i'll have left and the detailing of the faces.
Now back to yours: some remaks about topology: seems like you got some problem with proportions of the arm - again :argh:
The elbow should almost be at the middle between the wrist and the shoulder. And as noted before: the wrist is somewhat thick.
The lenght of both arms should be the same as the lenght of the body from head to toes. This is almost correct. So considdering this will make it easy on witch part of the arm you need to strech.
Your also lucky with the hair, now you don't even need to do the ears :buttrock:
Last remark: the inside of the hand, right in the middle of the hand under the two middle fingers. It looks like a big pit and it should be smooth. It's not actualy that obviouce.
hope this helps. Or am i just bugging you? :argh:

Geteken - Hi and thanks for dropping by again. The beard is a definite yes.
centurionit - Luckily I think I have that atmospheric solved. I think I have...:curious: At least with a volume light and atmospheric effects in Max it might be possible. Hopefully it looks like magic when I'm done, although it's just 3D. Well - not just 3D - Magic.
tuck - Thank you incredibly much for checking my humble post. Hope to have more for everybody to look at soon. And for the compliment...apprecciate it truly.

Nothingness - You know that I appreciate the crits. I don't think you'll ever be able to bug me. At the moment I'm struggling to rig that monstermesh that I created...Unfortunately it's real slow going. I'd like to make the changes you've reccomended, although maybe it's too late in the game to make them. I'm hoping the final would redeem my mistakes. When I started off, I never really consentrated on making a model that's true to reality. I figured it could be forgiven if I push and over-emphasize certain features for the sake of perceived detail. I approached it, keeping in mind that I could work selectively on the features that would show in the final, but got little carried away...Story of my life. Anyway - here in South-Africa we've got a four day weekend coming, so I'll use the time to my advantage and have something for you to crit. I'm not really happy with the progress I've made after my last post and have been redoing alot of things. I'll get it right eventually... after the learning-curve.

hey asbassie,
don't worry about the things that go a little wrong. I spend much time on the body myself and it looks horrible. First off, it's the first completed one i made. Second, i tried my best and know now what to do better next time.
To make it even worse, my skeleton wasn't like it should've been, and i was in a hurry so i got mistakes i can't correct. Or i need to start all over on the rigging part. then composing them and doing the clothes over again.
Next time i'll do the clothes while the character is in rest, and do the folding and stuff when he's at pose. Also when i know they are standing correct.
So just give it your best shot and show us what you're made off
really nice updates so far! keep it coming. The last batch of concepts are pretty dark - in a cool way, loving that style

Juan! Cannot tell you how much I love the dark, almost obscured character setting...its wonderful to make such a dark scene things are barely visible...really think that's cool...kind of bold and expressive of a confidence in your own modeling and compositing skills. Rather than necessarily showing every detail of the model, its so subtle -- really smooth. Love it! Looking forward to seeing more! (Your bearded concept sketch is fantastic too -- hope you can pull it off!)
Good luck!

mmbenya - Sir, I thank you for the positive input. More is coming
melkao - Like the darkness heh? Yeah Z-brush is a revolution for 3D...enough to drool on for certain. I'd actually love to be more skilled with the Z-brush app, but all in due time.Right?
oceanbluesky - I feel that anything you can manipulate turns into art...If it's on paper, canvas or a computer monitor, it still finds a way to communicate a message. With this piece I don't feel that it absolutely necessary to highlight every aspect of the detail so as to keep part of it a mystery. In relation to the bearded scetch - there's already a beard, not finetuned yet, but almost done. Although it's not in the final composition, because of the angle I've chosen, the beard will feature in the final turntables.
shakes - And shakes, gotta get Z-brush. Thanks for the support
Looking really nice! I actually liked your wires post as the material looked a little rotten, which makes me think it might look cool to have some rips and tears in the material?
Nice character, very creepy

M477 - Thanks firstly for the input. I must admit that it feels like I've bitten off way too much. I'm aiming to finish the project, but a lot of obstacles are making it extremely hard for me, 'cause its like a major learning and experimenting experience so far. The rotten cloth idea strikes me as a good one and I'll see if I'll be able to incorporate it. Rips and tears are also a good idea seeing as though the character must seem to be stuck in those caves for almost an eternity. Still need to do a lot untill I actually start messing around with the materials and such.
My first priority now, though is to make the props.
Nothingness - Dear friend, it has been a long time. I've been up to starting a simple rigging procedure and redoing and redoing and redoing, trying to get it just right, but you won't believe the struggle I've had. The only reason you're waiting is because I have not made any significant progress. I'll have the next update as soon as I'm able to show a little more of the composition. Hope it's soon.

Here we are a day before the D-date. I've been churning this work out in the latest hours after work. Sleep has been only a stranger to me in the last weeks.
In this progress update I'm trying to show more or less how I had gone to work in trying to get the atmosphere right. I've given a few things up due to lack of time and processing power. Rendering this had been a task of note. The hair I got almost exactly what I wanted, but unfortunately, work comes before play, thus the rest of the details I was planning to cram in got lower priority to getting it done in time. I believe deadlines are not to be missed. Hope you're not too dissapointed.

This is a little pre-post editing render. On this I plan to make a few minor adjustments in the color levels and fix up a few clitches that I'm not too completely happy with. I'm not even gonna say how rediculously long it took to render...but it was long. I've also learned a lot during this unique challenge, one of which is that next time I'll spend more time planning before jumping right in. Moreover I'll actually try to keep it simpler in the future too - meaning I'll start out more basic and not overcomplicate things right from the "go!" After I'm done here I'll get to work on that post-editing. Still waiting for the turntable to render out. Good speed and prosperity to all other participants.

I agree with mmbenya. You were powering along doing really cool work but getting the flu is no joke. That's a shame. The ferryman is excellent and I really like your journey idea too. There are some really hypnotic parts of your image which I like a lot - the bird for example is perfect. Congratulations and good luck

05-29-2006, 02:24 PM
Mdavid - I'm not really sure about hypnotic, but it's definitely the nicest compliment I've ever had. The bird was the only way that I thought I'd be able to tie in a small-ish creature. So, thanks a lot for the motivation. This will not be my last post though it is my first. I kinda jumped into this - like i've said a lot - and the reception I got was quite inspiring. Now I know, that being judged along with all the great artists that have taken part in this challenge is not only a great honour, but also the best way to learn and be motivated to do better - seeing as the bar is set so high on most accounts.

hey asbassie,
great to see ya finished the challenge! And guess what, the night it all was over, i gott the belly flue - or whatever you call it in english. I even reached a feaver of almost 40°C yesterday. I'm starting to feel better, but i have nog some heavy days of work ahead of me, so that's not making me feel better :argh:
I haven't been posting to much cause i hadn't had much time, and now my internet is so sloooowww it takes ages to load this site.
So, if you happen to rerender the scene :banghead: maybe try it with some much darker water. Could pump up the drama. Then make the water have a high specular so it reflects much of the light at that end, so a glow there would be nice.
But i'm so late with this stuff you'll propably think i'm a fool!
hope you learned a lot during the challenge, i know i did!
cheers and hope to read you next challenge

Nothingness - Sorry to learn your health wasn't at 100% Once again thanks for the input and I might consider rerendering just to get it exact. I know how much of a mission it was for me to finish in time. I also haven't replied much, but I really want to have at least a look at every entry. As for learning a lot, I hope to learn a whole lot more before my time is over. I believe one can never stop learning, and this challenge was definitely what I needed to get the brain working real good. I am definitely more confident with my gained competence through this challenge. And from now on I'll just keep posting work, see what I can pick up. I feel I need to fill up my portfolio, which has nothing in it yet. See around.Good health and good fortune.
