Which is better technique?I'm planning to learn modeling, and don't know which technique to learn.

Hi!

It really depends on what you want to do. Most modellers I know use polys. I think they are great. Are you aiming at a job in games or tv/film?

If you are using max, avoid nurbs, else try both, stick with what you like most.

Any technique is a good one, it depends mostly on the endproduct ( feature film or games for example). The most important thing though when beginning in 3d is to choose what suits you most, wich technique you feel most comfortable with.

Try them both and see wich technique suits you most.

I've choosed polymodeling, though learning nurbs in Rhinoceros would be easier cos I'm drawing in Autocad. Polymodeling because I get freedom of moving vertices, so when something is wrong, I can simply correct it.I've started to model a car after some car modeling tutorials I've passed, and after I get familiar with polymodeling, I'll try NURBS. I've been postponing learning modeling, because I'm lazy, but now I see that I've lost too much time.

Hope you got the point.

Anyways thanks for replying. Thanks for useful link karl168.

I'm using Maya, and I prefer polys. NURBs tend to be a little more... abstract, for lack of a better word. They can, however, make certain things a lot quicker, such as making surfaces with the birail tool. SubDs are kind of a mix of both.

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=314139&highlight=nurbs has some discussion about that very subject. Are you planning on doing any product designing? Or will you be doing any 3D animation?

Good choice for starting out,
when it comes down to it, poly modeling IS in fact the essense of 3d creation.
Everything is built with polys (even nurbs are actually a special way of displaying and editing polygons), so it's good to know.

But I just wanted to get it out there that it can really be very beneficial to not let yourself get tied down to any one technique. While you can really do any shape with polys, or nurbs, some shapes will be far easier in one as opposed to the other.
So knowing both may allow you more speed and freedom in your modeling.

Keep moving forward in your poly modeling,
but don't forget about Rhino! If you ever have the time to learn about NURBS as well,
definetely look to using Rhino, as it has one of the most forgiving learning curves, and most straight forward interfaces of any software I have seen yet.

Good luck.

Also check out Amapi Pro 7.5 from Eovia for doing NURBS modeling. It is very quick to learn and get hooked on.

I can't belive it's happening in front of me.It is quite simple with polymodeling, and I'll send my 3 days model of a car. I must say that I've been using 3ds for a long time, but I've never modelled in it any complex scene.I was just adding materials and playing with light

Not exactly 3 days of modeling, but here it is. My first model...

I would love to see wires of that model.

Here's the wireframe, what do you say? C&Cs are very welcome!

What is this project for? It looks like you are into product design or something like it, if so most of that industry uses NURBS.

No, I'm learning modeling.I'll try to model some more things with polymodeling technique, and later I'll try NURBS. What do you say about model people?

My training was in animation but demo real that I am finishing right now is for a modeling job in a gaming industry.
For all my work I have only used polys. Poly by poly for face and box modeling for body. I played around with NURBS for a while but it never stuck with me. I'll have my stuff posted here...
