View Full Version : Photoshop Interface Colors?

Is there some way to darken Photoshop (without having to go into that fullscreen image mode)?

My biggest annoyance with Photoshop has always been the inability to darken it, so that I can work with dark images.

I can change Window's colors, but I dont like doing that (using XP) and that doesn't affect the bright-gray image window background color or blaring white image guides (which I need active 90% of the time).

- And is it just me, or wouldn't one consider it very unprofessional for such an app to not support dark colors by default, or the option to quickly toggle them? It has always perplexed me... and hindered me from seeing dark grays in the image, always to notice them when it's too late, outside of Photoshop. Working with game textures and website images that frequently have Alpha channels or fade to black at the edges makes it crucial that I be able to see the edges, which I can't do with the bright interface, and therefor very frequently find lines at the edges of my images that shouldn't be there, that I couldnt see inside PS.

- So is there some app or plugin that can change the colors for me, or does CS2 have the option anywhere? I use Photoshop Interface Assistant, but only auto-hides the toolbars, and doesnt change the colors, unfortunately.

I am not shure if is this what you want, but click "F" twice while working on ps and the background will turn black, this way you can see the values much better!
Once again, i am not shure if is this what you want

You can change the inside color of the document window by selecting your color of choice and shift clicking inside the gray window area with the paint bucket tool selected, if that's a bit of help.

If you want to have a completly black background press "F" twice and then the "Tab" key to hide the bars. Other than taht i don`t know anything else.

Thanks, that helps quite a bit. The inner window background color was the most annoying part.

- I do wish there was some way to darken the entire App, for when working with multiple images (when not wanting to maximize a certain image to block out the others, which I need to do quite often)...

You think Adobe would listen if I sent an email? Nah... but I'll try.

Thanks again. And for those who also seek to darken photoshop, or reduce clutter, use Photoshop Interface Assistant. It auto-hides the toolbars, and I never work without it. It did take a few days to get used to though, so dont give up on it at first. It makes the screen seem so much bigger, because you can have your image on 98% of it.

I posted this exact request at the Adobe Feature Request forum a couple of weeks ago.

Have a look at the latest version of after effects (V7). You can customise interface colours and I am hoping that Photoshop CS3 will be the same. Adobe are always talking about keeping the look and feel consistent across its applications so fingers crossed.

It would be great to see this feature for the whole creative suite.

I'd posted a bunch of tips on a 3dbuzz forum a while back (a couple of years ago actually! Where'd the time go.... )

It serves as a good companion to the tips provided in the earlier linked thread. A couple have been made redundant with CS2 like the linking layers tips, but most of them still work pretty well.
