View Full Version : Vinyl Record help
ofaeon 12-16-2002, 08:49 PM I'm trying to model a vinyl record for a documentary video I'm working on and need help on texturing. Using Lightwave 7.5, I made this object and the tracks were done using 2 layers of the "wood" procedural with frequencies 1 with different spacing as a bump map. One layer is the actual pits and grooves, the second are the track separations.
I used Worley's G2 plugin to make the specular anisotropy on the tracks and inner border. Have one point light above the record label.
I've out of ideas on what I can do with the record tracks and need help on making the pits and grooves more distinct and random.
Tx for any help

This may sound crazy, but why not paint the texture? I recently had to texture a drumkit, including cymbals which have grooves similar to those on LPs. I painted a map by hand, and it turned out really well...

Is there a tutorial or some reference material out on the net to go about this? I'm rather a neophyte.
Thanks!

Just paint a massive image of 1 pixel thick concentric circles, and planar project it onto the object :)

Thanks! Will give it a go

ps7 makes that sort of thing easier still (unless you want to go the whole hog and use anisotropic shading, the shader i think it's called brdf or bsrdf in lightwave should do the trick., though you will need to limit it's effect, however this should get the effect your after)
anyhow back to photoshop, if you use v7 then simply make a random style gradient (Gradient type=Noise) and use the circular gradient and flat map or map as in the post above, you can control that however you want.
alternatively if you're not using the current photoshop, but any since v4, then do the following (this will do even spaced rings), create a mid 50% grey square document that's 400% the size of the final document, go to filter->sketch->halftone pattern... in the dialog box change the "Pattern Type" to circle. scale down to a uarter of the size and you've got 1 pixel circles.
you want circles that have a little bit of difference? then put in a grey gradient add in a few lighter and darker colours here and there, then make that circular from teh centre of the image. from there use the filter and reduce the image size, should be easy enough.

technicaly, theres only 1 groove.....it just gos round and round till it stops in the middle......and as far as I know...the groove stays the same width etc as it goes around.....anyone recall??
looks good though!!

it's true the groove stays the same, overall, but as the actual sound is caused by serations on each side of the groove, the louder the noise the higher the peaks and troughs, it gives the look of the grooves being more or less pronounced at different points.
making a single spiral while accurate isn't needed. however if you are a stickler for accuracy (even though no one will be able to tell), then use the spiral tool in ilustrator and just wrap thespiral tightfor lots of revolutions, then bring that into photoshop as a single pixel stroked line, and away you go! :)

even better..maybe...

do that.....make the spiral in Illustrator....BUT....then Use a Radial Gradient to Color the LINE that is the Spiral...so that the Spiraling Line...will be different shades of Black to grey to white etc.....and use that as a Dissplacement Map....much better than useing it as a Bump map....just make sure the Record Geometry has a TON of faces so it can be dissplaced with good detail.....just an extended thought on the above posters idea...

Tx for all the great suggestions, the latest attempt I used the Illustrator route, did a lot of circles created using blend and varied them in frequency. In Photoshop I used the spatter filter to break up the circles. I then used it as a bump map for the record tracks. One problem is that the pits and grooves are not at all that dark as seen in my latest render. Visually looking at an actual record, there is an abrupt transition between highlights and dark pits and grooves. I'll be trying the great suggestions. Thanks!
