This was my intial sketch. Nothing special but just to show some elements quickly. The story is about gods who lived in this great fortress far away in the heaven. The belief in them were the main reason why they lived, but since time passed by and people forgot about them, the reason for they existance were lost ... a lot of them dissapeared and died and with only few of them left they decided to pick one and send him to the earth with mission to restore faight.
What I want to show in this picture is a old man (god) at this dock thinking what could he except when he comes to earth, and in the same time I want to show the sadness because he are leaving his home. The journey begins, and what he could expect when he comes to earth is something that even he doesnt know.

I didnt signed in the challenge but I started few days ago so thats why I will post my work till now.

So this was my first layout. I decided for the portrait format of image because that was the only way to show the giant structure in the back. The structure is mostly made with gothic architecture on the top, and at the botton is are the metal part structure on which the gothic arch were build. Even the characters dont know who build it ... they assume it was created by the unified life energy of humas.

This is the modeling start. Everything would be done in the separate groups like window01 window02 etc so I can easily combine them in the future. I decided to create few type of windows, from small ones to big ones, some arches, fences, and other type of building blocks so that is my task whis week. Maybe in the few days I will have some rough model of cathedral.

So here is the first window form my first day of work which was two days ago...

And the render test from yesterday when I modelled arches. This is just a test render so I suppose the windows wont be placed like in this one in the final cathedral model.

Great lighting and modelisation. But your sketch idea is not clear to me realtive to the aim of the challenge. I don't see what is relative to a journey.
Anyway good job.

That's really beautiful. I think the light burn out will work well for being in "heaven".

Nice story too. Have you thought any on how you will display the start of a Journey?

The sketch was just quick (2 min) drawing which is pretty different from the idea what I had now but I decided to post it because it was a start. Idea is abut a god who left his home (that building in the back) on the journey to earth...

zem:
yest i thought about how to display a start ... there are two ideas at the moment but I must decide which one suits better. I know they suggest that you show the background where the character is going, but I decided to go backwards (what he left behind) because my character doesnt know where he is going it just know that he must go there.

Hi.

I didnt post anything since some time. I like to do some work and then show it so here it goes ... few of my last steps.
At the moment I am working on the back building ... the BIG church. It will be rendered in few layers since it will have around 5-6 milions of polys till the end and my computer cant chew up that much.

So here it is the first blocking and begining of modelling of that great building.

InTerceptoV

http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/13/10812/10812_1143541135_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/13/10812/10812_1143541135_large.jpg)

And after the few passes here is the part where things got some form and overall scale. I basically model everything but I will do some optimizations at the end.

One important decision is to go with as much instances as I can. So there is a little shelf of the objects I already made which I copy-instance and place on to the scene. Everything could not be done this way, so for some parts of the scene I export the simple bounding box or low poly object where it needs to be placed and model in separate scene. After I do the import and the saga continues...

Nice work! That is a BIG church.. As for rendering out the final image in stages and compositting it together, I would love to see how you manage this effectively as I am not too familiar with the process. Keep it up though, it's looking very grande

This is just an example of the ideas which I paint over last rendered image to give a visual idea of what else should be done.

I paint with my mouse so this looks terrible but it is enough. And yes, the wacom is comming this week so I suppose this kind of sketches would be better. :)

It slowly evolves and everyday something new apears. It tends to reach heavens, and I will not stop until that happens. :)

Ok so this was made yesterday. The part at the level of the bridge is what I am working on now. I will try to finish it today ... but I will se how tired would I be after work.

So basically I changed the idea a little bit. The area below the structure will be a place where field of planets would be placed. Near every planed would be a sign of what is the population of the planed, what kind of creatures are living on it and percent of belief + the last time god visited the planet. So in the first plan there would be my little god jumping on to the eart which is some kind of portal to it.

Thats it for now. If idea evolves more I will send another description.

Hi.

First thanks for nice comments. It really get me motivated to do more and more. The only problem is that in the morning I come to job little tired ... anything for art :)

This is the render from yesterday. But it is not complete render ... I pasted only a part which I worked on and that is another church in the middle. I suppose I would need aditional 4 hours to finish this part. The next area of interest is the bridge and the arch so it is the next step to do...

I got the idea how to get the dirt on to the temple. The final render will be done in two passes .... one with pure brick without dirt and other complete dirty. Then after that I will paint transparency in Photoshop where the dirt should apear. I don't know if this would brake any rules, what do you think ... please help?

You can do that without prob... in fact... that can be a "normal" work for a Cg Pro... in production... this kind of things are very common... why take more time to do something in 3d if that can be easily and faster in 2d... it's the compositing step...

...but of course... we have 3 months to finish our pieces... and for the pleasure or for exercise us... we can do all in our 3d software...

Hi Lemog. Yes three month is long time but maybe not enought if you work maximum 3-4 hours per day. My only problem is that I am not so familar with the character modeling so I would probably spend much more time for that than for background. Thats the main reason why my strategy with texturing will not be to do UV mapping and texturing but direct planar or triplanar projections (this doesnt need UVs) which is the reason to do 2 passes and paint the transparency of dirt after rendering...

Well, as I finish this big temple I will make a few tests of this technique and we will see what can I do with it...

The newest one. I spend some time on the middle level of the structure. It's funny how things look more datailed when I worked on this part separately. And in the final picture they are so small... :(

OK. So this version has about 2 mil polygons. I optimized some models and will do the same in next step.

Now the bridge and few more details around this part of structure.

It is a little bit smaller now. I decided to get rid of some polygon loops to get things faster. At the moment I am working on the bridge which will produce bunch of new polygons so I must keep in balance all the scene.

Inxa ...
I will make some renders with other camera views, but after I finish this part. One friend already asked me to do the render of the carved window ... so I probably should. :)

FlaminGlow...
Yes you are right. All those details would be visible in the end. The resolution I am using for rendering these tests is 50% smaller than the final so I suppose that is enought to make the predictions what would be or not be visible at the final resolution.

Also big thanks for the other comments ...

The last statistics show that there are two milion polygons. But I use a lot of instances so I am not really sure if that information is true. The main thing is that I build everything so I can easily remove polygon loops ... and thats what I am doing when I want to optimize the scene.

And everything works fine in viewport... but the file is around 140 MB at the moment and it will probably grow up as I come to the end of this part.

Ok ... I didnt send something in a long time. :)

So here are the few updates. This was the process of modeling the bridge. As in the whole temple I have used elements that I already have ... so instanced it few ten times. There is also the part on the right side on the other side of the bridge ... again instances and instances.

So this will be the 90% finished model of the middle part of the temple. There is still upper part to be done, but I will concentrate now on the land below the temple....

I also sketched the land a little bit...

"in order to keep this manageable..maybe u should start referencing"

a good suggestion...also, if you are using Maya, and desperate, you can also create a .bat file with command line render code written in it...then just click on the .bat and render a 400+ mb file without ever opening Maya. Then again you must know what you are doing...I guess you could even export .mi files for a dedicated mini-farm? One of those Boxxes would be sweet for this project, huh? ; ) Good luck! Absolutely beautiful!

HI.

DimitrisLiatsos, oceanbluesky ...

I am already using a lot of instances, and rendering with batch file outside of maya. And using MAP files to save more memory for textures. My first idea was that if I want to make a structure like this i should do a lot of referencing-instancing + build it in two layers. So I build few objects (walls, fences, windows, arches...) which I to used as lego and build most of the structure with that.
And 64 bit maya would be also sweet. ;) Then I could have 4 gigs of RAM and wouldnt worry about memory alot. ;)

M477 ...
Thanks. I repainted the front part so it looks very different than in the last post. I will try to send this today.

-WOODY- ...
Yes. The planet is not finished yet. That stuff that you see are some problems with displacement. I intend to render planet separately and add some glow + gradient to it so it could look more interesting.

This is the newest render of the front area. I didnt like the old texturing that I have done few days ago so I tried to do a little different style and this is what I got so far. I must say that I am really satisfied with this color changes so I will stick to this one. There are some more stuff to add in front area and then the background is on the schedlue. There are also toons of other worlds all around. ;) I thought that if I put only earth in there it wouldnt be so clear of what the planet is doing there .... so when there are 4 more world in the background the idea is more clear.

i've been looking at this for a while, and i think it's time to start posting something :argh:

first off: great concept and fantastic architecture. I'm a sucker for the style.
I haven't been reading all posts, but here are some remarks/questions:
- i love the earth fitted into the ground with a path to enter it. The think is, that all the stone and dirt and grass don't make it look like heaven! If the picture itself need to tell more of the story, i think there should be mmore of a combination of a path and clouds. Sounds cliché, but it's visualy stronger in convincing this is a idea of heaven.

- what's your plan with the character 'god' ? Are you actually gonna shape him and give him a face? An appearance? a sertain body? The reason i'm thinking about this is because there could be interesting things to do with the character. One of the worst things i can see in a movie is them giving god a face!
Don't know if you already have plans for this but would be nice to hear of them.

keep up the good work

Thanks for time you took to write your comment ... I really need this kind of critics to think more about my work and how can I improve it.
As for the comment ... this is not really a heaven. It is some kind of other world in which gods live and feed with human belief. So in facts, these gods are not here for the people, but other way. Thats the main reason why it is not a true sweet heaven with a lots of clouds, but a world similar to ours but a bit more colossal. The clouds would be there as a ground fog, and the part of structure would be in the clouds to, but I need to keep the image colors fresh since these gods are basically happy nation. I thought about what character would be, and I decided to go with creature like dwarf ... old and small, happy and wise, with some energy flowing around him. I plan, if I had some time, to show the part of dematerialization part of his legs since the character would be in jumping pose just above the planet. We will see ... who knows ... but if you have any hints, ideas please post...

hey toni, no probs on the crits.
Only now i know the concept so my crits were a bit aff direction.

I defenitly like the idea of the dwarf and that he'll be jumping into a world. The energy surrounding him could also leave a trail behind him when he jumps.

The concept is more like the world and the gods they have in the greek methology. Sounds more interesting than heaven and god. More possibility's for impresions.

When you let the building go into the clouds, it would be fun having a sun visible. I first thought it would be suited to put him just at the sky under the bridge. But then again it would be badly positioned for the lighting of the scene.
Unless your world had multiple suns.
With the lighting you can also gave a very cool and wonderfull feeling just using a glow. I'm not suggesting that for now, beceause you're just modeling a lot.

ps. about the sky as photo: when you have one poly in your scene, that have that photo as texture, it is 3d !! :bounce:

There are some text about the concept in the post before so If you have some time to read it. But in short, the story is about the goods who live in this big structure and have field of planets in front of the temple on which creatures live and they belief in gods gives them energy to exist. There would be one good which jumps on to the planet which is in front of camera... and that is where his journey to earth begins.

The initial test was with displacement on the planet, so I suppose I must turn it on again. :) But there could be some work on maps for the planet, slight color corrections ... just to fit better.

Nothingness ...
You have a nice idea ... the sky as texture ... yes that will work. :) Well anyway, the sun would be a nice touch but I will see at the end how will he fit into the scene because of lighting. As you say, to put it under the bridge would be somehow strange since it would produce lighting situation which would distract the viewer to much. The glow is nice idea, so it would be one soft glow at the end just to make image more heaven like. Tnks.

Cool character Toni! Really like the feet. But the smallest one look a little to long…
Think you should keep his head without hair. He’s got the right monk look. And I guess that is what you are going fore.

Posing: personally I prefer to do a simple rigging and pose the character roughly. Then make a snapshot (copy) mesh of the pose. That leaves you with something that is a lot easier to do detail work on.
But if you are unsure about the pose or want to animate him you do a detailed rigging.

Looks good so fare!!

Yes there smallest finger is too big. The foot is not yet finished so I will correct this in next update. The monk look is what I wanted all this time ... I aimed to dwarf but as it developed I decided to go with a different look, and monk style character was exactly what I wanted. And yes you are right, the monk without the hair would be the right choice ... big thanks. My idea was big hair and beard but this was really good sugestion.

Here is another version. I didnt work to much yesterday so there are only changes to the foot and the cloth. I added some wrinkles to the cloth and reshaped the foot so that smallest finger doesnt stick as it did yesterday. The head is not yet finished, I hope to catch some time today to shape it completely.
As you can see this version is test without the beard, but I think that oldest with the beard was somehow better?

The next step, after the head sculpting, would probably be to put it in his pose and continue to work on it...

Last few days I had big dilema of what the character pose would be. I tried about 5-6 poses(jumping, reading, standing ...) and non of them didnt fit the composition of the picture. So finally, today, I came up with something ... he is in the process of praying to open the portal to the earth. As you will see, the character is not textured yet, and the model is not finished also. That would be my next step, and then the texturing of building.

There is one other change ... I have flipped the image after I have done postprocessing ... I think this one looks far more better than the unflipped one... it just have more flow in the image.

Yes, the atmosphere glow around the planets is also here.

Still lots stuff to do, I hope to finish this in time.

Yes you are probably right. But its a little bit late to change camera ... I will probably try to move the foreground layer a little bit closer to camera and test it if it fits. The character is not yet finished. I must texture it, and this is low poly version. You're not obliged too change so much the camera angle... of course... but maybe trick a little with focal, oriented the background to have much perspective effect, comes more closer the guy... you can trick with the scale of things, it's generally not visible for a still picture...

hay toni,

take much care at the pose of the character and those beams going from him to the earth! At the quick photoshoping you would almost thing he's pissing on it :argh:

But the idea is great! Maybe considder havind the beams surrounding the character a bit of so.

Good luck on it.

ps. i had a bit of a better feeling with the picture in the mirrored way. (like the beginning)

the reason: we are used to reading from left to right. And when looking at images you almost have the same way. But because the character is at the left, your attention is there mostly and prevents/bothers you to look to the right. So if you read the image like a visual story, you start with the character and move on to the rest. I prefered to keep the character a bit backward in the story.
Maybe it's a feeling created because you removed some space around the globe, deleting the visual explenation how the earth is put in the whole scene. Did you remove the space?

Keep up the good work and view my critics with a sharp eye! they are mere suggestions.

Im sorry but thats funny, it does look like he/she is passing water on a planet, LOL. You have a truly amazing image growing, I like it a lot better than in the begining.

Whats behind your character? It would be nice to see a few wood roof tops as wood is used eg. the dock. Cedar is nice, it has a lot of natural oils, can last hundreds of years, if not thousands in the land of the creator.

Cheers and GoodLuck!

I made some changes and the front layer with character is bigger ... you will see soon as I post it. I didnt want to make to much changes since that takes time to do it and synchronize all layers, but I thing this step that I took is enough.

Nothingness ...
I suppose the beams created that visual feeling ... of pissing. ;) These are just paint effects for now, and I will try to do this with the fluids which will probably look better. As for the flipping, why I did that is that when you start reading from the top left, the arch of the bridge visually attracts you and pull down to the character and because of that he is much more visible in the composition. The next eye step would probably be to raise the view and see the entire building... and thats the flow that I wanted to make. The older one didnt done that and everything else was visible except the character. As for the space I didnt removed enything in the image for which you gave a comment ... but in my new render I have some zoom of the front plan and some space is removed ... I will post that soon.
BTW the I had some beams surrounding the character but thet look pretty messed up so I pointed them to the hand. But, when the fluids come to the stage maybe it would be cool to try it again...

rasamaya ...
Well if the pissing character makes you guys laught then why not. ;) Yes, that is good critic and I will try to clean that up ... I thing the beams are the main suspect for that feeling.

SONIC-X ...
Thanks...

Yes you are right ... the texture on the building is the one I used from the start, and it is not finished. I will work on it next week probably. There is a lot of dirt to add... it will not be dark but just to give it more realistic feel. The dirt will probably be more pronounced in the bottom part...

Here is the new render. I moved the front part a little bit closer to camera to give more space for the character. Any comment about that change would be welcomesince I cant be objective any more because I am looking at the picture every day. The character is not yet finished, there are a lot of work on hands, head ... and everything else ... so exclude him from the critics. The only thing that is finished is pose...

A little update. It would be bigger if I didnt render the different camera angle for the front layar where character is. But anyway I fixed some stuff on the building like degenerated triangle at the bridge. Then I added some more details to the arch of the bridge and some more structure remake at the right middle part of the building.

Well, It is not to much but why not post something.

BTW I fixed the camera for the front plan and it is rendering right now so maybe there will be another post today.

Just adding some grass. This was just a test, but I will add some more today. I found that the hands of my characters are to big, so I should probably remodel it a little bit. I also made a test with the planet ... rotated it a little bit but I like the older version so I would probably stick to that one. The energy beams are a little bit different ... I made some models with textures which I added as screen merge in post. I am not truly satisfied with them ... I think that they should be thinner.

Well, thats for now. I didnt post the whole picture, only bottom part.

Great changes, I did like the planet the otherway, even though backwards, it was better. Besides the gods must have something backwards... The beams look better, but on your last large post. Still could use work? But at least that high arch is gone; that was the passing water look for sure. No wood on your architecture?

Your work is truly amazing, I think I said this before- Im inspired to do architecture, each time I visit your thread.

Hi there,

Beautifull work!

Here's a few reasons why I like the storm sky the best;

1. I never noticed the beautiful warm backlight on the arch until you changed skies.
2. The dramatic sky kind of echoes what a person on Earth might see as the God opens the portal.
3. The dark sky in the right corner adds drama to the upper right part of the building.

They're all good and none detract from the piece its just I feel that last adds the most.

that building is jaw droppingly beautiful..5 stars for that alone :)
..the forground however doesn't do much for me,not sure why either..the elements by themselves are great.the tree especially looks very well made(so nice in fact it's almost a pity it's not closer to the camera).
looking at it some more I'm thinking the face of the figure looks a bit 'toony'..whereas the overall sense of realism in the buildings is contrasting that

.but again..those buildings:bounce: ..wicked work man!(hope you add them to the turntable view)
well done!

Yes the monk is the last one who needs more work. I left this last week to finish him so I hope it came up as I wanted. As for the globes ... two of them are not visible any more but I think that adittion of the tree is better than before so I sacrificed the planets. But there are still three of them. ;)

Thanks. Final is comming soon... so drop by at the end of this week.

Stefan-Morrell...
I suppose it is because front layer doesnt have so much perspective... the same thing Lemog talked about two weeks ago. But it is too late now, I hope that next time I would remember these mistakes and think more about composition in the begining.
As for the face, you are true. This is still low poly ... but I left this week to finish it (character).
Building wont be in turntable ... theye are so big so in 320x240 resolution you probably would not see anything. But I will post some wireframes and more renders of all objects this week ... so stay tuned.
I considered the clouds from the start ... but I will see if there would be time for it since I wanted to put a cloud vortex in the point where energy collides with earth. Thanks.

this cathedral is simply breath taking and is the big trunf of your image... it realy caught my atention. In fact, the cathedral is so impressive that takes much of the atention of the character away, and to be honest, I don't think that, that character is in the same grafic language of the cathedral, its a bit out of place. I don't know but it seems hard to believe that the cathedral and the main character coexist in the same fictitional world... maybe some tweaks hegarding the realism of the character in terms of texture and shader would blend it with the background more seamlessly =) just an idea! I expect it turns out great!

Thanks for the comments. In my story the cathedral is the home of the goods who left these little creatures because univers is falling apart. But these creatures still visit the rest of the living worlds from time to time. I am working on character and it is better that before, but still not satisfied with it. It seams that I suck in character design :( and I would probably need to give it some time to learn it. In next challenge the character will be the first one and then the background goes...

The castle is really cool;

but i don't get the monk and the earth thingy...
It's not very clear what is he doing and why; and why there is a earth in the middle of the garden in front of a gigantic castle.

Is he a homeless magician? I could probably read your story to find out but all i wanted to say is that this image does not convey a story or feelings or emotion all by itself. Someone needs to read the story to understand what is going on.

Also the foreground and the background seems to be 2 different images put together.
The green stuff and the monk beeing one and the castle another one. Maybe it would help to put some vegetation closer to the castle.

good luck!

Lemog ...
Poor me ... and I though that I am unique. :( It would be funny to get us into the one projects ... then we could model things at atomic level. :))

patbb ...
You have a point ... some vegetation near the castle would be fine. But the problem is that everything (story behind the image) is falling apart so the earth is one of the rare planets who is still alive, and thats why there is still grass around hers teritory. And yes, the story is the key element since my idea could not be entirely shown through still image.

coochaki ...
Thanks. Your image is also a great one.

Yes I admit ... it is a bad habbit but I cannot help myself. :) If anyone have some good psychaetrist specialised for 3d artists. :) And yes tweaking ... thats the time eater, and almost every time the changes are so small that no one can see it except creators. :)

Chapter 93 from diary: My last journey to Earth.

"The gods left us. Angels, they said ... we created you to be our right hand, the ones who pursue our goal to raise biological life all over the universe. And from the beginning it was as they said, until now. Billions of years passed since the creation, but we never foresee that our masters can leave us. We, the angels, are all that are left behind in upper world. Our fathers left us after those apocalyptical events started. Only piece they left behind is a temple in which they lived from the time of creation. But, the universe is coming to end. All the life which we raised through the universe has disappeared. Only few planet, out of billions, are still alive, and we still visit them from time to time to raise belief in gods. But belief in what!... if intelligent biological life only knew how our masters used us all ... how they created all life to serve them and not to praise it. All that life energy which was drained from belief in them ... if they know what great deception that was. I am ashamed of my fathers. The Earth, a planet which was one of the most beautiful in the universe is at his last decade. I visited Earth so many times before ... I was her guardian, and I will be her guardian this last time. This is my last visit, a journey to Earth, a decision to share the destiny of life at that planet. "

And my journey with this picture also end here. It was pleasure to work through these three months with all you guys ... you made, with good critics and suggestion, a big part of this picture. Thanks my friends, and I wish to know you all in person one day. Good luck to you all.

Thanks. Details, details ... which gave total around 10milions of polys. That was my best so far. And I suppose for the bigger stuff I would need 64bit maya ... so hurry Alias, sorry, Autodesk. :)

I can't believe I did miss your thread all this time, Toni! It looks so brilliant! :scream: If you should had worked at Weta, Minas Tirith could had been featured completely in Lord-of-the-Rings-1! (at least... you seem to build such a city soooo fast)

The architecture is amazing, so is the concept. I love all tiny little details on it, and I'm sure that those will be even more justified on a big printed version! :)

Also, with your image, you show of that technology is... limitless! At least... almost! ('still waiting for the 64-bit? :D ;) ).

All the best to you in the voting! You 100% deserve to be metioned in the final results!
