Hi- I haven't posted to this board in forever, and it has really exploded in size so sorry if I'm not putting this in the right place.

I'm a longtime photoshop user who is just beginning to use it as a painting medium.
I've been working on an eye study loosely based on this (http://www.heathermcnabb.com/test/eye.jpg) photograph.
Suggestions on how to work on some of the problem (*cough* i.e. crappy) areas would be greatly appreciated. I'm having particular trouble with the skin texture, which keeps flatting out when I'm trying to get the shading right.

Thanks.

Overall this is beautifully done, the inner corner of the eye could use more shadow and highlight. The color of the upper lid might need some more red in it, but it already looks very good. Maybe a few more upper eyelashes. It really depends on if you are going for a super realistic or idealistic look.

I guess I was going for slightly idealized, but a little more realistic than I currently have.
Thanks for the crit and the compliment!

Everytime I look at the picture that you referenced it makes me not want to critique your version, because yours is such a good likeness of her, so I've waited a day, and now I'm gonna comment without looking at the reference.

I think the line above her eye, the thin darker one, is extended to far to the left (her right).
Also it seems kind of blurry, which may be what you're going for, which would look very good, just thought I'd point that out.
Also the glare on the eye I think needs to be a brighter white, and I'm not sure about there being 2 spots
And the brow looks a little bare, needs a bit more hair.

But all-in-all it looks great I especially like the freckles and the way you did the brown in the eye, nice work.

Thanks for the comments aldog- I really appreciate you taking the time to think it through.

I've made some slight improvements and I think I'm going to move this one to the finished section and move on to my next painting with lessons learned.
