I start modeling Bugs...those bugs will be unusuals.. inspired in real ones.. but differents. For the organics parts I will model parts of them in Zbrush as I show in the image 1_Max low-model, I import in Zbrush this low-model 2_Zbrush sculpting 3_model exported to MAx.. I add a optimize-modificator + meshmooth iteration 1.. to smooth the model... well, Why I do That?... to optimize a lot the total of polygones that will have the entire scene.. but giving the sensation to have organic pieces...

Nice modeling of the leg. I am not sure about the suite entirely though. My instinct says it needs more. I don't know what though. Could be that it just needs textures

your models are great! really fun and engaging, creative, and cool -- but, the bumps you've placed on them are a bit distracting (they could vary more in size and placement) and the colors you're using are completely unappealing...I'm being honest, because your base models have so much potential...your colors look washed out (unintentionally)...your character's eyes seem to have cataracts...(in my humble opinion) they could use a gloss, a hit of light...there is a great tutorial on creating eyes in this thread: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=325146 hope you can use the same technique in your software....good luck (don't mean to be negative at all...the base model shapes and expressions are first-rate, very very good and exciting)...just an opinion...your character's expressions are absolutely wonderful -- that's why I am so shocked to see these colors good luck

Womgoose: it ´s all 3D exept the backround, painted in photoshop, the trunk-branches are modeled in Zbrush, imported in Max and painted in Deep-paint.

authentic: You are right, I´m not sure yet what will be the final scene... perhaps the "big-bug" will be seating on a cart.. or walking and talking with other bug I will add later... don´t know yet... but yes it´s sure.. for the moment it look like a little confuse :p

This is magnificent!! The depth of field, the shading -- wow, your characters look so much better in their "natural setting" and, they didn't look too shabby alone!
Really adds a lot to place them in context...the pink and the green, the contrasting colors, all work very well together. This is really a beautiful, fun, inspiring image! (Might go into the 2D render put a bit of shadow beneath the foot of your character on the right side of the image...doesn't seem to have caught enough of a shadow with your light setup?)

Good luck!

Great great great!! The DOF dramatically improves the effect. The composition is a little bit "noisy" as for me, I feel it`s quite difficult to focus on the characters, especially on the "horses":)). But even with that I`m amazed by your work and jealious about your lighting skills:twisted:.

Wonderful!! Absolutely professional, beautiful work. Just love it. Very moving. Exciting to just compete in a challenge with artists of your calliber.

The various dots and bumps and round little pink flower things and even the glowing trail from your last mosquito character all tie in wonderfully together. Very well composed image. The depth of field makes it look like a professional photograph -- I love this kind of semi-photoreal cartooning, which has only recently become possible. You seem to have an intuitive grasp of it. Reallly would pay $8 to see a film of these characters. Hope you put together a pitch sometime in the future!

Good luck and congratulations!

Hey Stéphane, just reviewing your inspiring entry once again -- could you please post some info about your shading networks, in particular, those used for the mosquito character (your last) in the upper right? The shading for his abdomen -- purples and pinks -- is really wonderful. Also, was the depth of field blur done in 2D?

Thanks! Congratulations and best of luck!

Oceanblusky: The shaders for the purple-body of the moskitos is a VrayMtl-material, I used a Car-shaders and I play with some parameters to obtain the effect I went, (play with the diffuse gradient-map "gradient ramp parameters") For the others skins shaders, there is only standard materials, diffuse maps + Specular Levels Maps "Grey maps". The Dof is made in 2D.. as you can see on the bottom, I used Alpha channels to work separated elements, bugs, background etc... well wish you the best guys :)

Hi Stéphane,

The image is very nice and happy!!!

But i think you can to separe the "planes" of your image like a blue background, not use only the DOF, but the colors too. And another thing is your light, i don't can to see if this is day or nigth, it's like studio light. The colors are beautiful but the light in front of characters shape the forms, a more lateral light resolve the problem.

But is only more a point of view. Congratulations and good luck!

What was the error message? Is the zip under 2MB and entirely .jpg files sequentially numbered? It takes a while to upload....

See that seems to be the problem, you don't have 120 frames, you have 121. Try deleting the last frame i.e. img_0120.jpg, so that your last file would be img_0119.jpg .

Hey there. Which archiver are you using?
also this may seem obvious but did you rar it or zip it?

Sorry about the problem your having but you have a great entry. You will get it sorted so congrats on finishing and good luck in the judging process

oceanbluesky
05-12-2006, 08:05 PM
Oh!!! Same thing happened to me -- they are using a really cool php script or something to convert these files automatically to Quicktime. You have to make sure the files are not in a folder within the zip. They should not have a path of any sort...just the files alone in the zip folder. For example, when you unzip the zip you make to upload, it should unzip all 120 files directly to the destination directory -- not into a folder with the same name which you may be storing them in on your computer. So if you were to unzip your zip to your desktop your desktop would be covered with 120 images...when you test unzip to your desktop you should NOT have a folder such as "my_entry_turntable" on your desktop which would then contain 120 files.

I hope that makes sense...I'm low on sleep. Just create an empty zip file (Right Click>New>WinZip File), open it, then select all 120 of your images and drag drop them directly into the open zip -- don't zip the file in which you may be keeping the images. Just zip the images themselves directly. That might work.....good luck!

stefgrafx,

The sense of whimsy and charm is evident in the detail and color of each crazy insect. Enviable sense of mixed styles, particularly in the fairly realistic wings of the top character, and the bumpy shells of the others. The fairy dust is lovely.

Much to learn and study from your thread, so many thanks. :applause:

May your journey to nowhere lead someplace luxurious with new toys. :buttrock:

Whoohoo!! Congratulations Steph! Such a fun bunch of characters arranged in a beautiful setting. One of my favorites -- early on, since you finished so quickly (had been in my inspiration folder for so long, I am not kidding, I actually dropped a bunch of my characters and props onto your image in Photoshop just to see how they would look -- and, they didn't look bad, because your background scene is so much better than mine! I still have that image! It inspires me everytime I come across it -- but not nearly as much as the original, of course!)

Looking forward very much to seeing your work in a future Challenge! Cheers!
