View Full Version : Pre-Selection Highlighting
guypapyrus 03-08-2006, 06:16 PM I went to browse the Modo 2.0 new feature list the other day and saw, way down under "Workflow Improvements," mention of "Selection Pre-Highlighting". Can anyone in the know describe what this entails? My searches of the Luxology website, the Luxology forum, and other places haven't been very fruitful or definitive.
I know Martin Krol always pushes for, in many contexts, a Mirai/Wings-like way to select geometry. I saw his extensive post on the subject in the Modo Feature Requests forum, and I'm in complete agreement: modeling in Wings is such an intuitive thing for me, mostly because of this feature, in spite of its limitations.
Anyway, if Selection Pre-Highlighting means what I hope it means, I'll definitely reconsider the idea of buying Modo.

I actually still use Mirai, but yeah "Selection Pre-Highlighting" is in the same context as Mirai/Nendo :) . Brad did a couple of demos video which indirectly show this feature off.

Thanks, Sonk. It looks like it won't quite be what I was hoping for: you have to have the pointer directly over geometry to be highlighted, as far as I can see.
Still strongly considering a Modo seat, though :)

Well i ordered 201 just for the 2D/3D painting feature..it reminds me of Mirai :D. I honest cant say for sure if its implement properly(the Mirai way) or poorly as you stated. Assuming its not properly implemented, its not impossible to ask for a update in 202 to get it right. Anyway, hopefully its its done right. I'll test it once its out. Im gonna turn Modo into Mirai with some python scripting and GUI changes in 201.
Most people reading this thread is probably thinking "huh, why is pre highlight, so important"? ;D .

It always seems like such a tricky thing to explain. C4D (my main app, though I use Wings for much of my modeling) pre-highlights, but you have to be directly over the geometry. This is OK with polys, but can get tedious with edges and points. It's magnet tool actually works the way I'm describing: the pointer snaps to the nearest vertex, so you don't have to be that precise.
Of course, ZBrush works this way as well. You only work with vertices, but imagine trying to sculpt in move mode if you had to put the cursor directly over a vertex to move it? The thought chills the blood.
I actually took the plunge and bought Modo, and in my initial tinkering, I have to wonder how people get by without pre-highlighting. Of course it has all kinds of other wonderful tools that make this less of an issue; let's just say I'm looking forward to 2.01 now. :D
Welcome to the Modo family( modonite! )
I bought mines last week, because 201 was releaseing soon.
