View Full Version : Extrude along normals?

This is a very basic procedure, and I'm ashamed about even asking it, but I've had loads of looks through edit mesh parameters and axis, but if I wanted to select each poly of a geosphere and extrude them along normals but not as a group, but individually. Basically whats happening to me is that the whole geosphere is getting bigger, which I guess is normal if they all extrude at the same time, but how do I make them do it separately?

Use edit-poly instead. It has much more functions than the edit mesh.

There may be several ways to do this but the one that springs to mind is to select the whole thing & then use inset (meshtools script) to inset the faces by a small amount. Then extrude & they should all extrude individually. You will of course have an extra edge loop at the base of each 'tower' but you could use scale on the edge loop to make it blend in smoothly or worst case scenario, select the edge ring between the two loops & collapse for all towers.

Uhm....the extrude tool in edit poly should do it lots faster than using scripts and stuff.

Aha! Here it is! In editable poly "extrusion type: By Polygon". Purrrrfick! So this leads to my question, why don't they do all this stuff in Edit Mesh too?

Hi Carl,

Go this way:Create Geo sphere>Convert in Editable Mesh>Go to Sub-object Vertex>Select all>Break>Go to Sub-object Face>Select all>Extrud! Voila,all this in Editable Mesh,boy!;)

Oh, cool. I guess now I'm gonna go read the manual about what breaking vertices actually does...
One thing I found about that is that if yo meshsmooth, the inner part of the geoshpere turns empty :D

A difference in the datatypes.

After the extrusion, select all the vertices and weld them.

You can weld back the vertices: Select all and weld selected with low value,Karl.

Oh, yeah! The famous greeble! I stumbled across it a long time ago... Useful for quick greebling but not for custom ones...

For REAl greebling, go HERE (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=661) and HERE (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/tutorials/norling/greeble/greeble.html)

Enjoy! And thanks to everyone for the tips!
