View Full Version : toon shader plugin for max4?
crgquest 03-04-2002, 11:55 PM Hello fellow artist, I was wondering if in fact there might be a toon shader/toon renderer plugin for 3d max 4 that anyone may know about. There is noway I could aford to get "wavefront" or "softimage". I'm a starving atrist like the rest of you guys & girls. I found a link where there was a download for a max toon shader (?) but when I tried to download, It said it no longer exist.
So if anyone knows about a plugin or a cheap software that has a toon renderer/shader, please let me know. Thank you in advance for your help.

Our buddy David Gould (who is now working at Exluna) has arguably the best toon shader for 3ds max - Illustrate!

Here's a little trick I use to get a quick and decent toon shader effect:
Grab your lights (this only works if you have 2 or 3 in the scene), and turn the contrast between 75 and 100%, and your Soften Diffuse edge between 0 and 25%.
Render that with a Catmull-Rom anti-aliasing effect, and it turns out pretty good.

Go to www.neilblevins.com for an excellent tut on making the textures that'll do this without messing witht he lights. For the best results, Il;lustrate as mentioned above, but, this'll give you a great start.

Although it might be expensive, Brazil when it finally comes out has from what I've seen a very capable and versatile set of toon shaders. Final Render also has toon shaders which are perhaps not as versatile.Rumour has it that Vecta 3D is .. er ..*pants*. :)
There's also cartoon-reyes. Haven't worked with it yet but the images seem interesting. I missed an easy funtion in illustrate to change the strenght within one line. It's impressive how the lines in cartoon-reyes fade in and out.
