ok.. this is something real simple (and yet noone i've talked to in person seems to be able to give an answer).

In Max, when you right click on the Move tool, a little window pops up that allows you to know and manually enter exact x/y/z coordinates for anything (vertex, edge, etc).... where in maya can i find this tool or something similar to it? I'd like to know?:hmm:

you can always enter exact values in the channel box or Attribute Editor. also for cv's. if you select cv's, right on top of the channelbox is an entry for the cv's. click on that and you'll get what you search for.

if you want to move a specific amount from the current position, just use MEL:

move -r x y z

I'm not sure that the -r flag is right (think it is), just check the MEL command reference. Remember, whatever you want to do, you can always do it in MEL

thanks guys!

the CV adjustments is more along my preferences, but knowing the mel command also helps.

.. however.. it seems CVs only takes the current selection's position as 0 0 0... any way to set it to say the actual position in relation to the dead center of the grid?

There's also the type-in box at the top on the status line. It does all sorts of stuff, but if you select a vertex and hit w for the move tool, you can enter absolute or relative values. It's in the form X Y Z (with spaces), if you don't want to affect any channels use a period (.) instead. So for example with 'Numeric Input: relative' selected, entering ". 10 ." would move a component up by 10 units and leave the X and Z untouched.

Very handy tool.

to enter world coordinates for anything you can use the "xform" mel command..
that helps a lot sometimes after parenting and freezing transforms :)

cheers
