View Full Version : HDRI Lighting in 3dsmax5
Hello!
I am trying to get any decent result from using HDR images to light a scene in 3dsmax5. I do get decent results when using the skulight as is, but when adding a hdr image no amount of twaking can rescue the image from the global pile of useless pixles. So my question is: Has anybody got any slick results to show and give a short "howto".
Look at the attached file for my HDR test image.
No.1 Settings:
rays:250
filter:0,5
bounce:2
No.2 Settings:
rays:2000
filter:2
bounce:2
Anything else is at default. (No exposure control due to the fact that when i put it on it only made less contrast in the noise)
The HDR Image is debevecs st.peters_probe in long/lat (Spherical) format and size 256x128. (I tried the same image as 2000x1000 pixles, but that did not make any difference)
PS. The middle sphere is raytraced in No.2

Just to make sure your setting things correctly... You are using the Bitmap HDR map type right? Also, in the map rollout at the bottom you need to change the setting from RGB to HDR. Also depending on the scene you might need to either make the exposure setting a negative number or a positive. You cant do fractional numbers so I use the output rollout and use the output ammount with a 1.5 for instance to get an exposure between say 1 and 2. Here's the rollouts for the mat editor and environment panels. Also here's an example of HDRI lighting. If you use the environment it'll reflect the HDRI image if you dont want it reflecting then use the skylight.

MFreywald-->Looks like you are doing it right. But, are you sure the "bitmap HDR" map is not a plugin? At work and at home i only have the standard Bitmap map type. Maybe the maptype has to be initialized in some way? If so do you know how? Beacuse i would really get on with it and make som slick HDR renders someday. Thanks for your visual feedbak!

I believe you need to get it from Blur studios. It's a free plugin. Look at www.scriptspot.com and click on plugins on the right.
Nope, neither scriptspot/max3d.3dluvr.com or blur have that as a free pluging on their pages. Sure that one did not come with finalrender?. A colleague told me he had a plugin called bitmap HDR, but that followed the installation of finalrender. Anyone has some great ways of exploiting max5 HDRI lighting?

LOL..doh my bad. Dunno what I was thinking. 3dsmax5 is right, that's the fR HDR map in my pics. But the splutterfish one should be somewhat similar.
stal3fish--> Ok, have not tried it yet. But my hopes was that, as rumored, max5 actually supports HDRI. So i was trying to make this work without any 3rd. party plugins. It looks like nobody has made any progress doing that so far.

yeah if u do a search under the 3dsmax help files it comes up with zip....
i havn't tried the splutterfish plug with the standard 3dsmax renderer, sooo it would be interesting to see the results, if any

Well..no time for testing this at work today or tomorrow. Going to make a 3d presentation for the main news on the iraq "crisis". thats going to take the best part of tomorrow to fix. But if the force is with me, i might do a test with the spluttersfish plug at home. Strange of discreet to implement this feature and hide it so it can't be used. But hey, maybe the marketing people are smarter than us?

hi Knut!
you could use the hdr image and convert it to a floating point tiff format or something it is called. then you use it in the map for your skylight.
lycka till!

max odes a pseudo HDRI
you can assign a map to the color of a skylight. in the modify panel, when you ahve a skylight selected, you'll see a map button. click there and assign a map.
you can read the doc by hitting f1 and looking at all the controls for a skylight. its inthere
its not that good, i triedit and decided to go 3rd party renderer [first fr, then brazil] im finding the interface and general implementation for brazil to be better, as its completely standalone.
megaflaizer-->Yes, i know you can put a standard bitmap in that slot. But since max5 actually supports floatingpoint tiffs (HDR) it should be possible to use those slick HDR Images from various sites on the web as a lightsource.
:D I have now posted a message on the 3dsmax5 specific forum at support.discreet.com. I'm now waiting to see if any of the good guys(Or girls) have something clever to say about this.
matlock-->Forgot to say that i used HDR Shop to convert the .hdr picture into a floating poiint tiff file before loading it into max. Max5 itself does not support the .hdr fileformat.
