what i remember, never was !!!

therefore ???

you probably mean the layered texture. this node has a blend mode switch.

:D

cheers....

that fixed the problem.

how does one bake a layered texture...it seems to not work like a normal shader in this respect....

correction:

i noticed layered shader only works if there is a light in the scene...is there a work around to basically merge the Layered Shader into a single texture?

yeah thats right.

i ususally do this by assigning one of the shader (one by one) and then bake. after that bring them all together in the layered shader

Baking layered textures works straightforward here with convertSolid.

Baking layered shaders can be _kind of_ done like svenip described.
I guess a "baked layered shader" has lost its layered shading ability and is more of a prelit map. Hilights or reflections wouldnt react very well anymore.
So it may look fake when there's too much camera movement
Right? Not quite sure on this.

1. ok. so i *have* to have a light in the scene. there is no equivalent to 'flatten layers' like in photoshop? i don't really need to bake shadows or lighting into the texture so thats why i am asking. (on the layers are combinations of shaders and file textures btw.)

2. why is is that after using "convert to file texture"command in the viewport the texture does not update, i just see a green color on my model but then if i render it, the texture is actually there
and how can i make it stop doing that?

3. has anyone ever written any enhancements to the convert to file texture options to do something like let you choose where to save the new texture it generates (a little thing but navigating the file trees and constantly having to move image files is annoying me today)

4. has anyone ever made any enhancements to the layered texture attribute editor to give better control over that darn thing ( too easy to accidentally create new layers, would be cute to see the images of your textures instead of colored rectangles, be able to switch layer order etc.)

5. thank you.

Having no light at render results in acitvating the default light if you have it enabled. That's why there should be no problem with that lights-need-to-be-present behaviour. It's not great the way it works, but there should be no problem :)

About the green material thing, check the hardware display tab on the material AE.

Textures on the layered texture node can be switched using MMB and drag. It's in the manuals. Reading them makes you wise and powerful :p

it seems that when there is no extra light placed in the scene that the file does not convert... i get a completely black texture as result. this makes sense i suppose.

hardware texuring is always on... the newly baked created and applied texture will not show until i close the file and re-open it.

i read the manual daily... i would however like it if certain things in Maya were designed a bit better. and since people like to tinker with maya i thought it wise to ask if anyone had ever tinkered with the way the layered texture attribute box is presented.

thank you.
