Well, Im working on a little shack that a character of mine will use as his sort of storage area/tiny tiny warmspace. Its supposed to sort of be a mix between an outhouse and a crappy cabin. Anyways, let me know, I have included a few pure model renders, and then an example of my texturing so far. The textured image was before I did a lot of the modeling though.

Main question to you all, its going in the "outback" and I was wondering, tin shingle roof with tin-ish piping or wood shingle roof with like iron piping? Both will have flashing around the pipe, it wont just go through the roof.

I think wood shingling would suffice....great work...I like it...

Thank you much Remi. I was totally gonna go tin, but after seeing how the final turned out with the shingles modelled... im leaning towards a wood one too.

Hey...maybe even traditional black tar shingling might work...try it a few different ways....lets see an update...

I am making my final storyboard for my script and storyboard class right now... its a huge like 200 point final project. As SOON as its done though I will go straight back to painting/manipulating textures for this, and get it all textured, including a few roof variations. Anyone got an idea the best way to go about texturing the pipe? Its all one piece, I was thinking just unwrap the flat spots, and then unwrap the bends seperately? IT wont unwrap all at once for some reason.

Dont worry guys, havent forgot about this. Had 3 projects due in my 3D Modeling class this week, so this took backburner for this week. Should have some good updates by this weekend.

I think you should be able to come up with a decent looking texture for the pipe just using procedrals.....IMHO:surprised

True... I was VERY used to them when I did all my middle-school and high-school work in Animation Master. I could make a beutiful rust or anything... but now I just dont know how to use Max's very well. Its a full different layout, not as heirarchial as A:Ms was it doesnt seem. Ill try and figure it out

the roof textures shingles are blown out do something to make them more visable liek control your light or darken your texture for that part of it

other than that it looks just fine to me

well the top two arent textured at all... and the last one was before I modelled the roof shingles

FINALLY back to the project! Heres my latest version. Its hard to see the rusty metal on the metals... but up close, trust me, it looks goof for now. Ill post some newer pics after I model the hinges, handle, latch, and the metal plate that protects the wood shingles from the chimney's heat.

I have a minor update with details like handle and hinges and such... but not worth the webspace. Anyone know what kind of environment? I was thinking grassy hill, with a bright blue sky and a fluffy cloud. This is gonna have a day and night shot since I rigged interior and exterior lighting/bulbs for it, so then it could have the same shot, but moonlight with a bright moon with some more whispful clouds. What do you all think? The sky's will be very fantasy-ish.

I think you should go with a moonlight night, with a large moon in the background. What are u using for rendering/lighting?

....uhhh. I noticed the Brazil thing on my second look :)

well, heres the shack with the details added... and I also added a concept picture of my final image. Im going to add some long grass with flowers or something, along with some grass tufts around the house for detail. The grass isnt final, nor is the sky, and DEFINATELY not the lighting, just looking for some feedback. I am very poor at lighting scenes and am trying and trying to get it right, but cant. Also, I tried using Shag: Hair for grass, but cant get shadows, so I switched over to the free Grass-o-matic plugin, but am not happy. If anyone knows a good grass tutorial that would be wonderful, I just cant get it to look good. It would actually take less time to render geometry I think than the plugins, but there are 100,000 blades of grass, and that really screws up even your wireframe view if they are all geometry.

As of now the lighting is one light where the moon would be, putting off a cool blueish-grey color to light the scene in a night tone... I used brazils indirrect illumination. I obviouisly need more lights, but the grass always gets too bright then. The bright light on the side of the shack is from the lamp, but not well placed, that will also be fixed.

Anyways, help and comments please.

Cool I like it. Grass seems a little too regular, not random enough in direction and shape, if you know what I mean.

actualy its the length of the grass that looks off
it needs to be varatied as well as SOMe of it flattend.

Very nice. Is there lighting coming from out of the light on the side of the outhouse? If there is, it looks kind of screwed up... Or is that just me? :)

I think the moon itself is a bit too cartoony for the outhouse, the grass is to regular and the lighting is a bit off. Shouldnt the main light come from the moon wich is behind the shack? I think once you´ve fixed that youll have a really nice pic. Its got style and mood.

MrPunkin

yeah, I stated the moon image was just a quicky to show you guys. The single light in the scene is behind the shack.... but I need more to light it better. The grass is crap, but I dont know what to do about it.

Well, heres my semi-final. Im gonna add a few flowers and tufts of grass to add some detail to the hill and then ill be done. Im pretty happy with the lighting and background and whatever. I really am starting to think this is turning out good.

I found that taking some time with Max's Scatter is far superior to any grass or fur plugin (atleast at my level). What do you all think now?

Dang man, just realized how dark my monitor is at home. Gotta go home and fix that, sorry for such a bright pic. Anyways, maybe I shouldnt post my updates at 3am because its on the 2nd page before anyone even wakes up!

Anyone have any crits or comments other than the horrendesly bright image?

nevermind, just configured my monitor, the schools must have been WAY bright. Carry on, let me know if its a bright image or not

Thank you, I have an update, final update actually I believe. About to post it, its about 5 min from being done rendering on the other comp. The lighting is much improved on the grass and there are flowers now to add some detail and give it something more pleaseing and colorful.
