View Full Version : Toon Shading
davezak 03-07-2006, 10:33 PM first time playing with shaders. this custom one makes a black outline, colour bands and some hatching.
below is where I am with my egyptian cat character. working on the UV's now, then the texturing, posing, playing with renders and some nice final comps.
my question is about toon renders.
any good tips?
how important is lighting when using toon shaders?
http://www.davezak.com/images/cat1.jpg
this render has no lights and a plain white texture.
any ideas for final compositions and general crits are more then wecome and appreciated.

I would put a light in the scene to really see the effect... and for toon renders I would be wary of the amount of detail into the textures. And I love too shading since you don't really need bump mapping...
Can you post some renders with a grey BG...it makes it easier to see the toon shading details...

ya i was wondering about detail levels that are shown from your textures when rendered like this... i guess really breaks those down too.

tell me if im on the right track! i guess many cartoons are made this way?
going snowboarding so cant work on this for 2 days. fun though im excited for final compositioning. (what a hard life :P)

It looks good. for colours you can paint your texture normally, your diffuse, spec, reflection and whatever...and not have to worry about bump mapping...

Hello all... (only 3 of us thou ;) )
Thx Vicioun for the link. I really appreciate
>bit of a different life eh! ive been here my whole life. your experiences can be reflected in your work.
;) yes davezak ... I have learned a lot beside all the difficulties I had, I dont regret moving to Canada ...
and unfortunately I dont have much time especially for the last 4 years ... there were times I was working 90 hours a week... which means, no life, work work work and pay $$$s to bank for the debts ;)
Its finished now... soon, I can breath again ;)
>time to update your portfolio! plan for a demo reel in the future too!? key to getting a job.
I really need to update it I think the last time I touched my web was in 2003
>shake sounds very interesting. i really like aftereffect especially after being in photoshop so often. very powerful/
I likes shake a lot ... maya and shake are great to work ... they blend well
for example ... in maya you can export the animation or still in IFF format... and you can import IFF in shake ...
what I find beautiful is that, IFF has embeded Alpha channel... some other formats have it too) but you can composit it right away and easily ;)
>what projects are you working on now!??
hehe ;) the biggest project I am working on is TO SURVIVE at the moment ;)
I had exams in french school those ... getting the papers for income tax return etc... and Sympatico Tech. Sup. Training
But I am sure I will have time shortly and will focus fully on CG
as for the last works I have done
http://rapidshare.de/files/12580536/AtiClipCompressedVCD.DAT.html
When you go to the link, scroll down and click on the free button
There is a Countdown for 38 seconds wait until its 0 and it will direct you to another page
In the new page somewhere near to the bottom you will see a text that's saying: "No premium-user. Please enter"
Next to it there is a colored text ... write it to the text box and click on the button next to it "Download From Net mirros..."
And you Can start downloading
its 3 min 40 sec. clip ... It has nothing special just I was playing with Premiere a while ago
And
http://rapidshare.de/files/14293969/AtiFireFinalMPEG4FS.avi.html
this is only 5 sec. and my first Shake work
It is very amature but I learned a lot with this ... rotoscoping etc...
Rotoscoping isnt good still needs a lot of improvement... Color correction wasnt done etc... but my second work will be a lot better (I am already done 10%... but the rest will have to wait for now) ;)
>im working on toon shading.... and some unreal level design.
the model is nice I liked it
What renderer are you using? Mental Ray?
Take care for now

1. i cant get the eyes to follow exactly in position with the body. It has been bound to the skeleton and weights painted. Ive tried many 'parenting' combinations. (bottom of above picture)
2. im happy with the toon shader so far. constant tweaking.
3. some hassle with getting the shoulder to bend nicely. is it too late to reposition skeleton joints for better bending? without having to redo painting weights?

Rule 1: Never bind your eyes to a skeleton! Parent the eyes to the head bone instead....:)

to get eyes to stay with character:
group the eyes together. then add that group to the skull base spine joint.
this was not easy to find out. thx meg for the help!
hope this info can save someone else some time..
here is renders with the character posed.
the end is in sight for a fully animatable, textured character.

any ideas or suggestions for a setting and location for final comp and a animation? done in the same cartoon style.

...and not have to worry about bump mapping...
On the contrary; I think bump maps make it all!!
[Example here] (http://renaissance-lefilm.com/accueil.htm)
[And here-a Work from mine...] (http://p.23.free.fr/PICS/bumpyyyyy_cel_shading%21%21%21.jpg)
But your renders look good-and that cat too! :)
Good work :)

thx for help and input.

Well, guess it depends on people's tastes... I found the bump mapping used on the Renaissance characters annoying...
davezak, I really like the design of your character, and your toon shader fits it very well... The only thing I would crit are the eyes... Well, it might just be that I didn't see any close up of it, but I think you could work the texture a bit more, it would give her more soul...

I have found that in some cases a toon render can look very nice with an Ambient Light (with no ambient shading, defeats the purpose eh?) set to 0.9% total intensity with a directional, spot or something set to 0.1% total. Then setting the shader to Brightness, or drop the directional and set it to light direction, gives me a very clean render. Btw, I use bump maps in the main color channel only and get great results on things like grass.
Hope this helps
