A touch over your budget, but what I'd recommend.

Processors (x2) opteron 265 (1.8ghz/core) - $309ea. = $618
Motherboard tyan K8we s2895 = $414
RAM 2gb reg ecc corsair ram (2x 1gb) = $220
Video Card Geforce 7800gt = $280
OS HD 10k rpm 74 gb Western digital Raptor HD’s = $153
Storage HD 250gb storage drive = $100
Processor HSF’s (x2) XP-120’s (2x60) = $120
Case Lian Li V2000B = $265
Power supply OCZ PowerStream EPS12V 520W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817711002) $140
fans and misc= $30
Total: 2340

You could get a 6 series video card and save a little as well as run only a single hd and by snagging a cheap server case...

Hey,
Thanks alot tecton3d! I'm going to look into it right away.
I dont mind spending a bit over... I was looking into boxxtech.com for a workstation, or at least get the specifications from it... but its soooo pricy there. Around 4700 dollars for a workstation.
Thanks for helping again vbmenu_register("postmenu_3316487", true);

Oh btw... How much would a rendernode cost me... A good one but not too pricy?

FWIW, I have a BOXX

I pieced together an Athlon X2 based system for $620 (incl shipping) when I was thinking about building such a thing... note, that's about as low as it goes and it may be well worth it to put 650 or a little more into one with a higher quality mobo and 2gb ram.

Hey,
I dont mind spending a bit over... ("postmenu_3316487", true);

in that case for another $150, go with 2 - 74gb raptors in RAID 0 for speedy OS and hard drive functions

how's that boxx treating you? Im hearing good things about it.
I found A dual opteron 275 on ebay for 770$... Im thinking thats an awesome deal.
As for the rendernode... whats the rendertime on it?

Alienware PCs should be able to handle 3D Studio Max, right? Not the gaming kind but the workstation PCs.

as you'd expect the Boxx is working fine! I've had it now for 8-9 months and not so much as a hiccup - fast and stable ... : )

You found an entire system with 2 - 275's or just the processor for 770? If it's a whole system, that's a hell of a deal... the procs alone (hopefully a matching pair) are worth more than 770.

rendertime for the node... whoa, that depends on the scene, materials, and a myriad of other settings. As far as making an educated guess about how fast a machine renders, dig up some benchmarks for the particular processor your looking at (athlon x2, 3800...etc)

Alienware PCs should be able to handle 3D Studio Max, right? Not the gaming kind but the workstation PCs.
yep

I got a couple used opterons 250 from ebay (many months ago) for around $600 (the cost for a single processor at that time) so I went for it assuming the risk of buying a used processor and until now it has been stable and was a great deal.

But you have to be careful with this incredible deals in ebay, I know people that have buyed procs only to find out it´s burned out or even DOA (as if you received a DOA processor and instead of returning it for RMA you sell it in ebay) never trusting a person with private feedback works though.
