Bah, i just wrote a huge message about monitors and stupid thing didn't go through.

So in short, the monitor is just a guide, use it to check framing only so you're not in the way of the camera man. The monitor would be best in black and white if you're shooting film. What you see in the monitor is NOT what will show up on film. You won't see the true results until you get your dailies back.

Get a really good DP with a great reel. He/She will know what to do.

At the Kodak stand of the IBC they showed hardware LUT's, devices that could transform the Log (film) image to Lin (video), thus making it possible to view it on a broadcast HDTV monitor. The monitor can be calibrated like any other broadcastmonitor.

Great information from both Matt and Wouter, but unfortunately neither of you addressed samfisher's original question.

Samfisher, are you referring to your computer monitor when working in software? Are you asking how to calibrate it to make sure the colors match when you print to film?

If so, there are many calibration tools out there that you should run to make sure you're getting correct color, as well as you should do wedge tests on the film stock to correctly set up our output LUT's. Your scanning/printing facility should have correct settings for a LUT.
