View Full Version : Getting started... painting own textures.
MrPunkin 12-16-2002, 08:06 AM Most of my work is cartoony... and I really love the feel of a nice painted fantasy lookin texture. I went to paint some wood the other day, and I just couldnt do it. It came out very flat and stuff. Now, I have no problem with color on paper, and can get my exact ideas out, but when it comes to photoshop or painter.... it just wont work. How do you guys go about it? Do you scan in drawings of texture ideas, and color over top or what? I have a tablet and all that, but just cant get the detail and color that I can with colored pencils and a pad of paper. Please help out if you can.

For things like wood, I usually find that starting off with an actual photograph works best :)
I think it really depends on the person though. I personally find natural things like wood and foliage and stuff very difficult to paint from scratch, so I tend to use photos as the base for them.
