But under Microsoft, Softimage was able to invest considerable time and money into perfecting the app's core strengths - and Softimage|XSI 3.0 is the result.

I didnt know Bill Gates owns XSI also.

I looked for any information here (http://www.softimage.com/home/Press/) about that I and saw nothing.
You're telling me he bought Softimage and now he is buying up all these game companys also.
Wow...

Softimage was once owned by MS, but they sold it to Avid a while back (before the first XSI was released)

Softimage was owned by Microsoft from 1994-1998. Now Softimage is a subsidiary of Avid Technology.

here a more detailed history:

Feww, for a second I thought Gates had me again. Too bad for MS, XSI would help them in the future

You can basically thank Microsoft for bringing the "highedn" apps to the windows platform at all. So in a way, XSI is STILL helping them, even though they no longer own the application. I am sure they enjoy seeing 2k installed on the workstations over Irix :>

You are correct about that, once MS bought Softimage SGI bought Alias and Wavefront (which were 2 seperate companies at the time) to keep SGI as a viable platform.

So much for that now ;)

I wouldn't say that.

Before Microsoft purchased Softimage, Creative Environment only ran on SGI IRIX systems. After MS acquisition, Creative Environment was expanded to include MIPS, PowerPC, Intel and Alpha processors for both Windows NT and IRIX platforms. In fact, it was the very first move MicroSoft made after taking over. While possibly a technical headache, it makes good business sense to put the product on as many platforms as possible as the cost in added development is dwarfed by the increase in sales revenues.

MicroSoft later dumped Softimage because Microsoft's product line is all low-cost, high-volume sales. Softimage was high-cost, low-volume. Didn't make much sense to keep it around as it didn't fit the corporate image.
