View Full Version : Poly Modeling Tool (continuous edge-like adding an isoparm)
b.Schulz 12-16-2002, 06:06 AM I thought I saw a tool like this somewhere....some script for poly's? Anyone have a tool like this that they use in Maya. I want to learn poly's and I think this would be useful? Do you modeler guys use something like this frequently?? It's kinda time consuming to go in and add edges using the split polygon tool one at a time when all you want it to add them all the way around an object.'

hey if you are going to work with poly's you should definetly use Bonus Game from Aliaswavefront , it has very usefull tools like face split tool , extrude vertex, it is reall great, you can download it from www.aliaswavefront.com/games .
you should also give CPS (connect poly shape) a try , it simulates SubD, grab it from highend3d.com :)
good luck

Thanks...I got the CPS thing. It's sooo cool. I don' t really know how to fully use it but from the tests I did with it it was really cool. I'll check out that games thing. Any idea how to get MJ's Poly Tools to work?

ah....being pulled in many directions.....so...how do I install them then????
just copy MJPolyTools.mel into your scripts directory (..\maya\4.0\scripts) and edit the userSetup.mel - if you don't have this file create it and write MJPolyTools; and save the file.

oh yea...bonus game....I gotta go get that. I still can't install this MJPolyTools thing. I keep getting this error message. I did what everyone told me to do...I think???
Error: Object's name is not unique: MJPolyToolsMenu
Anyways....off to go download bonus games.

Actually Bonus Games looks like it's too much for me right now. I'm not that hardcore into poly's yet. So I'm just gonna grab some mels that are on the alias website and play with those. Until I figure out how to use poly's well.

Schulz, if you are getting that error then there's a chance that MJPolyTools is already installed. Do you have a menu item called "MJ Poly Tools 1.3" on your menu bar? Check your userSetup.mel file in your MyDocuments/Maya/4.5/scripts directory. Is the line "MJPolyTools" only in there once? Are you storing the MJPolyTools.mel file in that same MyDocuments/Maya/4.5/scripts directory (where it should be)?
MJPolyTools works fine for me on 4.5.
And a question for others: Is the Bonus Game toolkit needed if you're running 4.5? Was the Game functionality not built into 4.5?

Bonus Game is a plug-in i think that you can get from Alias|Wavefront. Adds some extras to poly modeling like loop spliting and selecting loops and I think some things for texturing. Most of that stuff can be done with MJpolytools which works on a Mac (yay!), but Bonus Game is only for non mac users (boo!).
