This is pretty embarrassing, but I actually am having to read up on this topic from
a link that a text file sent me to that came with the Hawk I bought for my Vue scenes LOL

Cuz boy!, I've been totally scared to death trying to figure out this Poser,
extreamely complex filing system that's seems??? way out of hand in complexity.
But, I guess I don't have much choice in the matter and you have to learn their weird filing system?

They have some thing called a RunTime, which really means, twenty zillion
seperate files for the same object stored in all sort of folders all over the place.
To you regulars who are used to Poser, this probably seems like I'm just stupid,
but you have to admit, they sure do go out of their way to make it as complicated as possible.
Though the site I was sent to claims, that even though it's intimidating at first,
it'll all make sense once you get used to it, so I hope that's true? LOL :)

You'd think, that the Hawk, would have a basic folder, something like,
Objects, Images, Scenes and that would be about it, and things like Morphs
and all would be stored within the actual object, like a LW object is, but I guess not.
But they have like 10 to 15 folders!
Something like that LOL

Anyway, guess I get to enjoy the Directory fun LOL

Back to reading................md :)

Well, amazingly, I got everything into (I think?) their proper places in their Poser folders :)

And, I figured out the lighting while I was at it.

I think I want to read up on that next section they have about optimizing your
folders for better memory usage, or whatever that next subject was about there?

Anyway, I had some fun and now can't wait to get these little critters into a Vue scene.
I obviously, still have a long ways to go to better understand where I store my own creations
and all that, like any morphs and whatever else things I do, but I think now I am on my way, finally.

I love this little hawk, a lot!....................md :)
Now I need to some time see if I can convert my
own home made Horny Toad Lizard into a Poser object.
Then I could have the hawk catching and eating him too LOL

It's a gorgeous model. Quite frankly, Poser directories drive me nuts. Incredibly hard to handle and manage. Something I do that seems to help is when you download a Poser item, unzip it into a working directory. Rename the folders if you have to - this helps identify them as the same item. Then manually move them into the correct runtime. Eventually, I'll probably break the downloads\runtime into different runtimes, but that's for a miserable rainy weekend when I'm bored out of my skull.

With Poser 6, storing files became a heck of a lot easier. I have mine in separate Runtime Folders on my hard drive; this way I have divided up Daz Props, Vicki Clothing, Mike Clothing, RDNA, etc. Under each Runtime, I have the proper folders for each, which you can find in the Download Folder under Runtime.

People can install items where they like - so if you want a category for Objects, you could make one. You can find a good tutorial for managing Runtimes http://www.e-frontier.com/article/articleview/1352/1/582/

Love your image! You're gonna be great with Poser and Vue together!!

Yep, that was the other link that I was going to check out :)

Eventually (last night) I realized just what they were trying to accomplish with their filing
system, and that seems to be that they are doing something similar to a standard like in
LW or any other 3D program, where you have all your different types of things in their
respective places, i.e. like Objects would be in an objects main folder with all the
subfolders for all your different objects, and then your textures (materials) would be
listed in the Presets panel which changes every time you chenge which tool you happen
to be working with, like Textures would show all you different testures and subfolders
that are appropriotly named that would have their own set of textures, like Metals,
Glass, Organic, etc., and if you switched over to work with Lights, then the Presets
panel changes to show ONLY light presets, the same way it worked with
textures and so on and so on for each tool you switch to.

So, my own theory would be somthing more like, Runtime/>subfolders</,
i.e. Humans, Animals, Furniture, Tools, and so on, with each subfolder having
something like,
Runtime/Animals/Hawk/
>with each of these folders within the Hawk folder<
Objects, or,
Poses,
Materials,
Morphs,
and so on for ONLY the Hawk.

Instead of having to keep going all the way back to the start of the hierarchy to get back
to the main list of Poses and then dig down into THAT just to find some poses for the Hawk,
and then back up the heirarchy again and back do into Materials just to find the Hawk's
materials and so on like it is set up now.
Way too much back and forth, IMO doing things the current way.
But!, the good thing about Poser 6 is, at least they "allow" this to be
set up however you feel suits your own taste, which is a great deal! :)

Of course, I still don't know enough about all of this yet to decide on any method
that suits me best, but I think the one I just suggested does sound best, to me at least :)
I'll figure out which works best for my in the long run though.

Oh, and thanx for the comments about the Hawk.
I really want to show a better version of the two critters there that looks more realistic
for a scene, but I was just having fun last night and of course, still in the learning process.
Poser 6 is faaarrrrr more powerfull then I ever thought it was!
The things I can imagine doing, are limitless, really, and I already have
lots of thoughts and ideas for things to come using this awesome program.

And to think, I had been under the impression that Poser was more of "toy" all
these years, and not to be taken seriously, when all it really came down to, was
most people just don't "work" with it seriously enough to get that power out of it,
as like any other 3D program, it takes some amount of time and effort from the
person using the software to get something that looks better then the norm.
I don't mind putting in the time, I have nothing else better to do anyway LOL ;)

Need to take a break from Poser today, as I am working on my train engine and the
passenger car lately, because I want to finally get those finished up and set up
and ready for exporting into other formats, such as Poser and Vue formats.
They will be for sale sometime in the near future too, with all of the complete set
that will go along with them, such as all the tracks and the different types of tracks and
excessories and switches and things of that nature and of course, the trains themselves.
People have asked me to sell them for quite a long time and would I please convert
them over to Poser format, but that was before I owned Poser or Vue and now
that I do, I decided to get with it and finish them up and get them to market :)

Plus, I just want to have fun inserting them into my own scenes :)

MD, It's the same problem many programs encounter (except the ones with big names and big prices... people using those will blame themselves before blaming the program). Poser is used - much to the chagrin of people posting at CG Talk and other places - at major ad agencies, in TV commercials and I am always seeing it used in newcasts and newspapers. I know graphic designers who don't have CG baggage and they think Poser is a God-send. It saves them boatloads of time and they can get a very acceptable result that their editors (bosses) are happy with.

That said, there are the same problems that all programs share of 3rd rate work being posted in droves. You have to dig deeper in search results to find the good stuff. And, unfortunately, e-frontier, like eovia, are terrible about posting more good work. Their galleries stand untouched for months. About the only place you can see new Poser work is at Renderosity, e-on (with occasional Poser/Vue pic) and the respective marketplaces. Meanwhile, the typical CG fanatic will keep ranting on about how you have to make everything from scratch, etc. Sure, if your goal in life is to be a modeler, fine. But, for any other purpose, Poser should be welcome as another useful, time-saving tool. What the naysayers fail to realize, is that the models built by DAZ and e-frontier and the vendors are quality models. How they turn out in finished work is a problem of users not trying harder to make textures, lighting, etc., work in their favor. The newer render engine in Poser can do nice renders, DAZ Studio (still free) uses 3Delight and it looks good and of course you can use the nicer, LW, C5Pro and Vue render engines, too, among others. Of course, you can't do everything in Poser, but you can do quite a bit with morphs, magnets, adding/deleting polygons, etc. And you can always export/import OBJ files with most any other quality modeling/3D program, where you can use the models as a basis for new characters/creatures. I am so happy some enterprising modelers have figured out how to make new heads for Vickie, etc. and now the old saw about every Poser work looking like her is going away. Now the people who can't model, will be turning out more unique work.

The only really big problem with Poser is lack of multiple undos, but, if you do your work on the animation timeline, you're pretty much set. Just step ahead for each change and you can go back anywhere on the timeline if you blow it.

I think I'm gonna buy that hawk seeing what you did with it! :)
