View Full Version : Pixel Aspect Ratio, how to disable/turn off
Maxim_311 03-07-2006, 04:17 AM For some reason when I opened up a image to edit it was automatically resized. Every time I open a image I get the following messege:
"Pixel aspect ratio correction is for preview purposes only. Turn it off for the maximum image quality."
I can disable it for the image in question, but I can't figure out how to disable it permenately. As it is now it adjusts every image I open and its driving me crazy. I'm sure its something simple I'm missing, I just can't find it. Thanks.

I think disabling it permanetly would be a "bad_idea"...
You must be working with video images?
if you have a pixel aspect other than 1:1(that of your computer screen) photoshop will do this so that you can mantain the correct screen aspect ratio. the most common reason this happens is that you are working with video. for example if you have a still from an ntsc video it will be 720x480(or486). if you do the math, you realize that for the aspect ratio to be 4:3 like it's supposed to, the pixels cannot be square. this is not a problem for an ntsc monitor, but since your computer screen cannot show anything but square pixels, you have to either have the pixel aspect wrong, or the screen aspect wrong. neither of these are ideal solutions. the easiest way around this is to work with square pixels (720x540) until you're ready to output, then resize to 720x486.

When you create a new file, if you open the 'advanced' tab in the new file dialogue, you will see where you can change the pixel aspect ratio. Set it to square.
If you had this setting on anything other than square, every single document you save from photoshop will have non-square pixels. Photoshop automatically keeps this setting for all new files until you change it again. This can be a bit of a catch if you have collapsed the 'advanced' tab can't see this setting when creating new documents. Every time you open a non-square pixel document, photoshop will warn you.
So either you have changed this and have been saving your files as non-square (which won't damage them in any way) or the person you are recieving the files from has changed this setting.
You can't permanently turn this off but you can delete every single aspect ratio except square. You can do this under image/pixel aspect ratio/delete pixel aspect ratio.
Keep in mind that even if you delete all of these, you will still get the warning if you open up an existing non-square document. But at least you won't be able to create anything other than square.
