This will be my FIRST try at modeling any character. I'm extremely new to 3D, so dont' expect anything spectacular.

I'm sure I'll make tons of mistakes on this guy, but there's no better way to learn. Any mistakes I don't catch, I bet you guys will. So please, rip me apart on this one.

The character is just some basic cat I drew up. Nothing special.

I'm having alot of trouble with his paws. I'm getting alot of magic edges that poke out when I apply Meshsmooth. Here are some wireframes in case anybody wants to look at them.

C&C welcome.

What you have to realize is that those wireframes are sort of useless to us. The best way for us to help you is if you show us the model before smoothing. Meshsmooth should be a rendertime effect, not used to cover up bad edge placement or to make something round.

Your cat design looks great! Just give us something to work with :p

[edit] I see I spoke too soon, you posted better wires as I wrote, doh!

Your creasing seems to be caused by some "unsupported vertices." I can't really tell from just the one view, but it looks as if you have some 5-sided polys and maybe some 3-edged vertices. Try to cut in more edges to create a solid mesh.

Maybe some reading will help? Modeling for Smoothing (http://maxrovat.sns.hu/subdiv/)

Scott: Thanks ALOT for the advice and especially the link. Now, I understand better how Smoothing works concerning triangle and quad polys and such. I finally fixed the paws...they are better anyways.

Hellrender: Agreed. Although I havn't really started on the feet other than blocking them out. I plan on going back and adding more poly's on the torso, as well as rounding them out. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Biffen,

Would you please post the wireframe model (before smoothing) of the whole thing (or how much you've got so far).

I'm a newbie in 3D, currently looking for ways to improve my modeling skills, so if you could, it'll help alot :)

And if it's not much of a trouble, I'd like to see it from different sides, too.

Thank you and keep posting in

Maybe someone could give me some advice. How should I start the head? Should I continue to extrude from the neck up or start with another box for the head?

If I WERE to start with another box (or sphere), what would the best way to connect the two meshes be? Just attach and weld?

As per requested, here is the unsmoothed mesh. (Havn't finsished arms, body, or feet. Most been trying to fix hands.)
