Hello,

I've got a small frustrating problem. Need to export a model from 3dsmax to gmax to make it work on a specific software (the software has a specific plugin that works only with gmax).

I have 2 models, one of them exports from 3ds and imports to gmax fine but the other one just pops the error. "an error has occured and the application will now close". This is not a generic windows error message but gmax itself pops it.

I know that the problem is with the model. When I save, it increments on evry saves and I keep them all until my models are complete so i've got a few hundred backup saves on it and at some point it exports and import fine, but thats about a 2month setback and is kinda unacceptable for me. I tryed to spot what I did at some point but cant figure out the problem.

I tried exporting and importing from 3dsmax to 3dsmax and that works good but if I then export again to gmax, gmax wont take it.

Is there some sort of way for 3dsmax to diagnose problems with a model? Any suggestions to try to fix this? other exporters that would work between both programs?

SV

Nobody ever had this problem before?

Any kind of suggestions would really be appreciated!

1. did you try using other formats other than 3ds like obj or fbx?

2. open up the ascii files and see if you can find the difference between the 2month old version that works and the new one other than just the vertices.

3. do some tests to figure out if its the actual geometry of the object or something else in the file thats causing the problem, like perhaps you have some funky geometry somewhere that max accepts and gmax doesnt...try optimizing it and exporting that, see if that also crashes gmax

thx 4 the suggestion. Looks like thats what I needed. I tryed the .obj export/import but it endedup screwing the model upon import however the .fbx export/import in 3dsmax managed to keep the model rather intact and from there I proceded to export in .3ds for gmax and gmax did take it this time. pfew, felling alot better now heh.

I didnt got to figure exactly what the problem was (by looking in the ascii as suggested. The file is just huge and while I can usualy understand raw information like that, its a tad big for me to spot some sort of problems.) but the most important is that it works so im happy :).

Thanks again for the help!!!
