Title: Cuotl City
Name: Dylan Cole
Country: United States
Software: Photoshop

Hello all, long time no post.
This is a painting that I did for the game trailer for Rise of Legends. I did this for Blur Studio and had a lot of fun doing it. The entire environment is a matte painting done with digital paint and photos. Blur supplied me with some renders of individual pieces of architecture that I relit, detailed, and arranged into a city. The final painting was 4096 pixels wide.

Beautiful work, Dylan, and always nice to see new stuff from you.

This is slightly off topic, but I have to say: I met you at the Concept Art confernce/seminar thingie in San Francisco last year, and you were by far the best part of the event. You couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful in sharing your techniques, and it was really appreciated by everyone. So thanks!
And thanks for posting this piece, too...

indeed - very inspiring.
Each time I see something like this I itch to try my hand at it but I just know I end up being frustrated because I wouldn't be able to create something like that looking so realistic.

How much approx. are photographs and how much is painted? It's almost impossible to make out.

Wow, thank you for the overwhelming response.
Thank you everyone for the kind words.

kbarts- yep, used similar trees. I shot them myself in NZ.

walrus-thanks, I had fun at the San Francisco event. I'm glad you enjoyed my session.

Kyena- Thanks, I am glad you can't tell how much is painted and how much is photo, that is the idea! It can't tell you an accurate ratio because I really don't know. A lot of the time it is just lightly painting over photos to add atmosphere or relighting a photo.

kraal-yes, I use a lot of the same photos, but that is usually because my clients ask for something specific and that is what they want. There is only so many ways you can show dramatic tropical green cliffs.

Purc-I wish I knew myself, I would be there with you!

Joscci-Thank you. I am not familiar with Shadow of the Colossus. What is that?

pum- glad you enjoyed the book, thanks!

dash2k4-thank you, I'm glad you like the DVDs. I put a lot into them.

HotGarbage- Thanks, good luck with your own matte painting!

sandrum- "beautiful fantasy goodness" is my favorite kind of painting!

Thanks again to everyone for the amazing response. And thanks again to Blur and Big Huge Games for allowing me to show this.

This is FANTASTIC work.... but hey, it's Dylan Cole, so what doth one expect?

What I wonder, Dylan, is if you forsee to be painting in HDRI in the future?

I think they will need to, to be realistic.

In my opinion, images such as this suffers from the classic case of "matting-paint-itis", i.e. the dynamic range is way to compressed to be realistic. I.e. it looks exactly like what it is - a matte painting.

Nobody will mistake this for a photo of a real location.

That is troubling to me. So many movies I have gone to, where the f/x and matte work takes all actual realism out of the film, cloud replacement being the main offender.

Yea sure it is pretteier, but it is in no way realistic. If the sky is so bright it would blow out to white when you filmed it with a camera please let it blow out to white. Don't add in a perfectly exposed cloud cover into it!

I see some newer films improve on this, though, we've been through a few awful years of the "matte painting look" on films.

I wonder if the industry is now fixing this and moving towards HDRI painting? You, being one of the True Masters of the art should know? ;)

Wow, thanks again. Sorry for the lack of replies, been busy.

Ranath-These type of shots can take anywhere froma few days to a few weeks depending on client feedback anf quality of reference.

nethus-thank you, that means a lot.

maranello55- thanks, I am glad you enjoyed the book!

rasamaya-no tutorials online, sorry. All my stuff is on the d'ariste book or my dvds.

Tamara- glad to hear you were at the gnomon weekend, it was fun doing that. Happy to hear you enjoy the dvd.

Emporio and adboy-thank you very much, it makes me feel great to know that people are getting so much out of the dvds because I put a lot into them. adboy- yes, blur gave me some renders of 3D structures, but I heavily modified them.

character- you are absolutely right, it is a bit tall. The shot had a big tilt down, hence the verticality.

chewaka-thanks a lot. come over and say hi the next time you see me at Blur.

MasterZap- You bring up a very interesting point, but I think you are blaming the wrong thing. You can have an 8bit matte painting that is exposed properly and it will look great on film, the problem lies in the direction we are given. Because anything is possible, supervisors and directors want to be able to see every little detail. You are absolutely right about clouds, it drives me nuts. I can't tell you how often I hear "let's cheat the sky a bit darker" It starts to look like a video game. Now this rise of legends stuff was for a game, so no attempt was made to make it absolutely photoreal, but I have come across that many times. Obviously HDRI is nice for color depth and lightin, but for matte painting it is overkill. 16bit is plenty. We need to somehow change the attitude of the sups and directors.

to everyone else, thank you once again.

Hello Dylan,

I don't need to mention how awesome your paintings are. In fact, most of the CGS members probably have at least one copy of your DVD @ home, including me. And i honestly think that you are the most loved painter because you are one of us. You don't speak sh*t like:
"...and with couple of strokes, you extend the sky."
You don't say it's easy. 'Cause it's not. It's not easy getting there where you are neither. But you're probably the only one from those super-gnomon-gurus that still takes time and puts his stuff into this forum and communicates with people.
So many talented people from Asia, Africa and eastern Europe seek any chance to publish and invest their talent for the job you guys do in California but most of them will never get a chance. That's why it's so cool not to have those distances in the forums.
I'm lucky to work as a director and as VFX artist too, otherwise i'd go wild if the concept art or matte painting was the only thing i do for living.
So, bottomline, please stay the way you are. That helps a lot.

Best regards and big respect,

Khan aka Chupacabra

Great Artwork, I'm really impressed.

Only two very constructive observations:

1. The lighting is really impressing and it is matching the light rays of the sun from the picture with great precision, but I think the some of the building's shadow on the ground is not really matching the direction of the light source (need more shadows on the ground).

2. The rainbow is very nice but I kept looking at it 15 times and something was not really making sense to me, I always saw them after the storm but not with the sun in front of me, so I looked for the scientific explanation (attached here), I know this is a fantasy world for a videogame, and it looks great, but just wanted to share what I found.
Scientific explanation

Rainbow in the spray and mist of the waterfall at Takakkaw Falls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takakkaw_Falls), Canada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada).

Rainbow can also be formed by the spray of a water fountain

The rainbow effect can be observed whenever there are water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water) drops (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_%28liquid%29) in the air and sunlight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunlight) shining from behind the observer at a low altitude (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altitude) or angle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angle). The most spectacular rainbow displays when half of the sky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky) is still dark with draining clouds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud) and the observer is at a spot with clear sky overhead. The rainbow effect is also commonly seen near waterfalls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterfall) or fountains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fountain). Rainbow fringes can sometimes be seen at the edges of backlit clouds and as vertical bands in distant rain or virga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virga). The effect can also be artificially created by dispersing water droplets into the air during a sunny day.

(found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow), there is alot more interesting information about rainbows there.

This is an awesome pic
I was wondering what you based the architecture on? Looks a lot like something Indians from South or Central America would build. The architecture and the mountains give it a Peruvian look.

Excellent use of detail; subtle but solidly anchored in the environment. I would like to comment on the wonderful cloudscape, though. This stormy atmospheric condition with breaking clouds often displays well-defined rays of light, a phenomena caused by the dense water vapor which is apparently abundant. Though not necessary, I would have found it a warm ray of light in an otherwise well-executed standard fare.
Great escape!

This artwork remined me of one of the most fomous works by my fovorite artist.
The artist is El Grecco and the painting was the view of toleto. Even the lighting is emblomatic of this materpiece; great work.

MasterZap- You bring up a very interesting point,

Hi Dylan, sorry for the late reply.

but I think you are blaming the wrong thing. You can have an 8bit matte painting that is exposed properly and it will look great on film,

It can... yes. I am a bit worried, though, that a painting done to the "exposure limitations" of a normal PC display doens't look as good on film as something not hindered by those limitations.

the problem lies in the direction we are given. Because anything is possible, supervisors and directors want to be able to see every little detail.

...which brings me to my second point.

Imagine director saying "I cant' see anything in this dark area" or "That cloud is way overexposed" and you can just hit the "+" or "-" keyboards on your computer keyboard to adjust the "current viewing exposure" of the HDRI, and tell him "See? It's all there. You don't see it here on the computer screen but it'll look smashin' on film".

You are absolutely right about clouds, it drives me nuts. I can't tell you how often I hear "let's cheat the sky a bit darker" It starts to look like a video game.

Indeed.

I rather see either of these (from the lower row)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b3/HDRI-Example.jpg

than this
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6e/Old_saint_pauls_1.jpg/800px-Old_saint_pauls_1.jpg

In my opinion this is a case of "tonemapping done way overboard" and it will never look "photographed". It may look "nice" or even "sort of like your eyes see it"... but it certainly does not look "photographed".

Obviously HDRI is nice for color depth and lightin, but for matte painting it is overkill. 16bit is plenty.

Yeah, but the problem with 16 bit is that it still "ends" at "white"... reality doesn't.

We need to somehow change the attitude of the sups and directors.

That was kinda my idea; by showing them "look, it looks nice when viewed in a different exposure, and since film is So Fantastic(tm) it will Magically Look Great" ;)

Anyhow, thanks for talkign to us mere mortals....

Very beautiful painting. When I look at your work it brings a sense of tranquility and humility.
Although your work is dynamic you have done a good job in still making it feel simple through smart composition, scale and layout.

Also, to see that you have captured realism and beauty with individuality through your matt painting is just as inspiring as seeing our world's real life enviroments. Your have really captured the essence of nature in all its beauty. truly an inspirational piece.
Great work.

Outstanding piece of art. Congratulations. Just because I must criticize, I find the buildings too sharp relativily to their surroundings. It could do with a bit of smog and decay IMHO. But who am I to judge this... Christian
