Here is my first stab at a concept. The idea is that there are these demon/spirit musicians leading this woman down a road. I'm not sure if she's going to be happy or scared yet.

Hi, I really like the characters, especially the toad one! But I donīt think they look very "demon like", they look more friendly than evil.

Yes, I'm not sure yet if I want to make them scary or comforting. They could have wicked smiles or they might be truly nice. I think I'm leaning towards the former though. I think they will ware develish grins and the woman will look unsure of where she's going.

I think nice Toads might be more interesting... don't when the last time I saw a 'nice toad' painting... heh!

might be just more interesting thing that no one else has done...

I like the little people.
I wouldn't mind seeing them with spears or something to give them a sense of mischief like the brownie characters in Willow.

My god...I haven't thought about that movie in sooooo long. Spears it is.

I have been toying with some other characters leading her along but it is just too much. (it turns into a circus) So I'm sticking with the two main characters. ...the fiddeler will be looking a little wicked and the toad will be looking sad I've decided. ...and then the fairy people will be dancing around them all. There is this feeling that I'm struggeling to convey but can't put into words.

This is my rough pencil drawing. I'm going to refine this some and then go over it with pen before I start with coloring.

The chracters will be slightly transparent I think except for the woman. The idea is that they are leading her yet she's not aware of them. Or maybe she is but they arn't totally real. I was thinking of having an additional character pushing her along from behind to emphizize their influence on her. But then I erased it thinking that perhaps it isn't needed. And I'm still not sure about the background but I think I might have a trail that goes off into the distance.

I'd love for your thoughts.

This is a the finished pen and ink drawing. There are some things I have yet to work out...but this is basically it.

I've finally had a few hours to lay in some basic tones and colors.

Here is my latest coloring job. I'm still in the process of pushing and pulling back on the colors. I feel like this painting is taking way longer than I'm used to. Feedback is welcome.

Hi again,
Wow, this is coming along nicely, I like the color scheme you are using but right now everything kind of blends together. Especially the background and the foreground, maybe if you desaturated the bg a bit itīll help.

I like the differant expressions they have

Keep it up.

yes yes...small update I know. But I wanted to show how I'm beginning to divided the painting into forground, midground, background. And I probably won't update for a while after this.

Here is another WIP. You can see I've been coloring in the characeters and have started to really get into the painting. Darkening and adding highlights..etc. My light source is kind of ambiguous because I wanted the light to be all around the characters...magical I guess.

perhaps you could turn down the line art. the clouds on the left are nice but the right feels weak. i would like to see a greater value shift on the little dancing characters, maybe just toned down shadows, like with a purple or something. also from the cameras distance the whites of the characters eyes would be barely visible, and they are a little too white.

keep on keeping on.

i like the idea of the translucent musicians. that would separate them from her. right now i wasn't sure if she was supposed to be singing until i read the description. maybe some glow from them would be cool if it was subtle. you've got maybe too much going on in the bg. it's swallowing up the characters a bit. maybe the fog should be more obscuring the bg and not obscuring the fg as much?

cheers, it's lookin good.

I'm reaching the point where I've developed the colors and tones as far as my painting skills will allow. (And I'm now sick of looking at this). I'm not thrilled with the values on this one...but I like the subtle colors I have going on. This project has been fun and really challanging.

Slightly ethereal - like the little characters and their slightly ghost-like appearance. The whole painting is full of whisps and magic at the moment, but perhaps constricting it to a couple of areas rather than everywhere might make it easier on the eye and a more effective finished piece - I'm having this battle myself currently so goodluck!

Good stuff!

Well here it is. I put a lot of work into this one and struggled with a lot of things about the piece. It amazes me how every time I do a painting I always wish I had spent more time with the initial drawing. (every time!) Thanks to everyone who posted.

This piece was inspired by my father's artwork.(Allan Reid) He's the major reason I'm an artist today. The idea is that this woman is being led by these fairy creatures who are playing musical instruments. Whether she is aware of them or not I can't say... But she is definitely aware of them drawing her somewhere. The creatures have very different personalities and all have different thoughts about the situation. The fiddler has a sinister expression where as the toad is sad. The ring of characters around her are likewise having different thoughts and feelings. I think that they all represent different things to me. In the background there is a hint of a trail winding away into the distance and eventually to the moon. This is her journey. The whole thing is very dreamlike and I think each person will have there own interpretation of it.
