Hey guys! Just thought I would show you the latest effect i've created. I wanted to achieve a war of the worlds type shot so went about some concept designs and then created the machine and car in 3dsmax ( very simple models ) The whole thing took just under a month to create. I used after effects for compositing the render passes onto the original dv footage.

This is a 40mb download and I had to go to one of the free hosting sites as I have no web space. Sorry about that.

Hope you guys can take a look and give any C&C.

( after clicking on the link click "continue with megaupload" Then close a little pop up to see the countdown till download. Again sorry for the inconvenience. )

Thanks

Tris

That download was kind of painful. . . 40 Mb? Try compressing it a bit more, and maybe use Putfile for the hosting (not so many ads).

As far as the compositing goes, it's certainly got potential. A few crits: the lighting on the Martian "tripods" seems too bright and contrasty. It's snowing, it's overcast, so the light is going to be diffused and soft.

I haven't seen the War of the Worlds movie yet, but I'm not sure why the Martians' "body" (the spherical bit) dips so much during the walk cycle. The first Martian's walkcycle seems a bit exaggerated.

When the lightning hits the car, it should produce secondary sparks and perhaps a bit of debris (from the road). http://detonationfilms.com/ has some good practical plates for sparks and explosions; or, of course, you could use a 3d particle system. Either way, try to make the lightning's impact more forceful. I didn't notice the car being thrown until the second time viewing the clip.

Keep it up--this definitely has promise!

Cool! Thanks for the feedback! Yeah I thought as soon as i posted this that not many would go through downloading it. I wouldn't have done hehe. Really appreciate the comments though. The scene could have been taken much further like you say. Believe it or not i actually intended to over exagerate the walking of the machines. Maybe it doesn't work or I should have experimented more... still, theres always next time! I'm hoping with a bit of help along the way I can get a half decent vfx reel going on hehe. Thanks again for the comments.
