Heyaa guys thanks:wavey: The systematic fanatics are at it again...
This time I'm gonna keep it simple (sure:p ) I think I'm gonna focus heavily on character, styling and emotion, some hope, fear and bravery... Plus a sprinkle of pure evil and doom 'course for the journey ahead... Should be enough to keep me focused... I'll try and hit at least one powerful metaphor with it too 'course...
makaron.. WOOHOO tooyootoo
DaddyMack.. YOINKS!!! Indeed;)
Gunilla.. I've been umm.. disconnected for a while but I'm officially at drooling stage with all the work already coming... I'll hit the commenting stage shortly and may even start soon:p Thanks Gunners:)
Climax.. Thanks mate, as always I'll give it everything I've got...

Hmmm... I'm thinking a group of kids in their pyjamas and nightgowns with teddies and dollies and maybe a dog, a couple of them carrying (fire for Mona:) ) torches... They've got a treasure map which we can clearly see and are about to embark up a dark and gloomy forest path (pure evil trees with claws and teeth) The main strength of the image will be a focus on the experience and expression of each of the kids at this point in time... Their destination is waaayy off in the distance... a big old castle maybe encircled by a full moon... Depending on how silly I wanna get I would like to place a few more clear obstacles between them and their destination...
Any ideas??...
Ooooh it's all starting again... The journey is slowly taking more and more synapses away from everything else... :bounce::wavey:
shakes
03-08-2006, 06:58 PM
good to see you're up bright and early mate! I like the idea alot-will work perfectly I think..maybe some hidden evil creatures in the trees?
makaron
03-08-2006, 07:00 PM
me like :) I like a image seen thru the eyes of a child... then you can let the fantasy flow, particular in a nighttime image... I think this is a good start :bounce:
*sing a long* oh oh oh fiiiire... :p
Super idea daddy man.
BIG WELCOME TO THE JOURNEY.
I like your idea about kids runing in they're pijamas, and map, and,,,dead ted tedy bear doll.;)
I loved movie goonies,,Your idea reminded me of that grat adventure movie.
All kids arround globe dreamed about quest for hidden treasures.
Waiting for an update mate. :)

shakes.. lol.. coming soon;)
makaron.. For you mama, anything...
Zapan.. I've got my dancin shoes on mate, let's party :bounce:
DaddyMack.. Kids, fire, teddies, dollies and evil...hmmm haven't I heard this somewhere before...
shakes.. COOL! evil creatures in the trees and possibly flying about and in the ground as well... Cheers Big Ears:cool:
makaron.. I thought you'd like it;)
A I R.. Heyaa! Goonies still rules! and I'll be using some of the vibes from it for inspiration.. .Great to hear from you Damir
Now... I've been looking around in your threads for inspiration  and found plenty... I've figured I've got a solid core concept but it needs a firm direction regarding style... I've decided to spend the rest of this month on character design and modelling, to make this image as memorable as possible I'm going to stylise and exaggerate each character as a representation of their personality and emotions to be portrayed eg.. Biggest kid with map and torch will have a chesty heroic build, stance and face, big chin, big brow, a little muscular etc littlest kid will be pure fear... all eyes and ears, in a maggie simpson suit... and on and on for each individual...
Thanks you guys for soooo much inspiration:lightbulb:bowdown: now this challenge reeeally has my attention
Anyone wanna take a stab at conjuring a personality or two and their resulting emotional state at the beginning of this journey? I'm considering a cast of 6-12
Cheers:wavey:

Zapan.. I know... I know... I'm trying to catch up...
I've had pencil to paper for layout and styling of this piece, as usual I'm developing a central character and I'll run the style off of her... Expect lots of bizzarely exaggerated characters in bunny slippers and pjs to follow soon:wavey: thanks guys :wavey:

Well finally off and running guys, I'm still working on the styling of the piece and it looks like I'll be using a few odd shapes for bods and heads, skinny limbs and exaggerated hands, feet and expressions... I'll probably begin meshing out this little lady soon as she will be the style marker for the piece and all other characters will be designed to fit with her overall vibe...
Thanks for not beating me too hard while I made you wait;)

I couldn't quite connect with this character up until now... I realised he was lacking an expression, or a feeling... So in typical 'I gotta go to work but..' fashion he's now more to my liking...

Well guys, had to spend most of my weekend prepping for rigging in Max, I think I've got a hold on most of it now, I also had to create mid term exams... Funny...
Any of you Maxxers out there got rigging tips/ dos and don'ts for me I'd love to hear them
thedirtypaw
04-10-2006, 01:31 AM
i dont have much of a rigging experience but for your model i would suggest you dont go into muscles and the likes because you'll only waste time, and as for the bone system , i kind of got around with physique and the usual character studio crap .. its not THAT hard but you must be very careful about the skining fun part. i suggest again that you rig your .. um rig.. for this picture alone i mean if it looks good here but wouldnt work with the hand another way you should leave it like that and if you will need this in a further project you'll corect the rig then.with more skill anyway.i think the ideea was to not waste your time.good luck.
cheers.

Hi guys, this is just the first test of many for the evil forest that I'll do while finishing off my characters... Basically the plan is to build a modular set of parts that I can configure in many different ways to create a wide variety of trees... Early days yet;) It'll come together...

thedirtypaw.. Hey thanks again mate;) I've looked into biped, bones, skin, ffd and morph, it should theoretically cover it... I doubt these characters will go into their own project beyond this one... I may re use Chewy though (you guys haven't met him yet) A chihuahua with some agression issues who actually belongs to Jim... coming soon...
Gunilla.. Aahhh but I'll wager you'll finish yours and have time to finesse:cry: I don't even know if I'll finish this time... BTW thanks again for your very kind words... I get the same feeling whenever I visit Shakes thread...
Lemog.. Thanks Big L;) I'm always trying my little heart out to create personalities and my new friends who've popped out since the start of the challenge are easily the closest I've come to date... I'm glad you guys can enjoy it too, I'm having a ball!:bounce:

Making a convincing and original character out of a tree has to be one of the hardest things you could do in character design.

Hi guys, I plan to make about 10 base trees from which I'll mutate the rest... This is just the results of 30 mins testing before I go play teacher again... I plan to try and communicate internal conflict in the trees between themselves and each other, as well as having them purposely torment the kids...
KangarooMan
04-18-2006, 09:24 PM

Thanks again for plugging in (again) Matt. You've always offered such genuine insight into the mess I make and I really appreciate your energy:beer:

Just a little look into my process for creating the trees... I start with the trunks, add the arms, add in detail and connect everything together... This will make it possible to create at least 10 unique trees from which I can mutate a forest...

interesting modeling approach...takes modularity to an entirely new level...actually going to try it myself, seems particularly useful for similar characters (for this project I've found it useful to keep a file with knick-knacks and secondary character parts, equipement, and such which can then be imported and reused in a variety of files -- for characters and their vehicles, props and so on -- your modular character creation is even more efficient!)...thanks for sharing, good luck!

Oh cool Robert -- like the creative details: super small neck, elephant slippers, missing tooth, hair bands, even the accompanying backstory "stays inside the lines" is neat, works really well. Look forward to seeing more! It's like a cartoon in progress, very fun!

makaron.. look lady! I told you already, we aint seen no bird here... Glad the fear factor is in Minnie tho.. Thanks;)
Womgoose.. Thanks for the brain borrow:bowdown: I'll try and include spiders, ravens and snakes, and I already plan many glowing evil pigmy eyes peering outta the darkness:beer: Cheers!
oceanbluesky.. Whoah! You've been paying attention here:) Thanks a bundle for connecting with this piece on the same level that I'm trying to create it:bowdown: It means much to me
I'm a little befuddled looking at all that I have ahead of me atm so it may be a while before things really start to come together in this piece but I'll try and make my updates make some sense as I go along...:wavey:

Hey Robert, Minnie's expression is great, I especially like the way you have here clutching the ball to here chest! The defensive gesture really reads well. As for...
any ideas of extra evils to add?
Scarecrows
Escaped mental patients
Zombies
Killer _________ (fill in the blank)
Poles
Tris
N-gons
No I think Lee just about covered everything there. ;)

Oooh this might be a tricky one to do but shadows that take on the form of another creature are spooky as well.
Like a tree that casts a shadow that looks like it is trying to grab the girl.

Nakary.. Thanks for your kind words, I have great expectations for this piece and as always I know I'll fall short... I just hope I can do the core concept justice...
makaron.. Begrudgingly adds Gnarly rats to my todolist, Thanks for another great idea Mona:)
Womgoose.. Love it! but I think it would be lost in all the busyness that's gonna be happnin... Cheers mate
Well, I've finally figured out enough about the skin modifier to spend a coupla days properly posing these guys, so expect some progress soon... My plan is to juggle all the remaining aspects to the finish line and see how much more of this gets done... ulp!;)
