depends on the game engine you are making the model for.....

Exactly.. Most engines can have more than one mesh.
But with Doom 3 you must only have one contiunous mesh!

Quake Arena required sperate models that would attach to 3 seperate nodes to animate, i.e. head, torso and legs. But each engine is different.
As for Doom 3, I wonder if the unified light architecture of the engine is the reason behind the uni-mesh requirment, I suspect it is.

Zeinlars - Quake 3 is not "required" to have seperate animation nodes.. you can animate one model with only the leg animations and than have the constraints some other place. But that's very.. unnecessary.
And for doom 3... it is true of what you speák1 :P
