A very quick, probably 20 second sketch, just to get the thought in my head down on paper. Done while at work waiting for a render. You probably won't make much of it but it was the very first scratch for my entry so I thought I would post it. The next lot of drawings will make more sense, I hope.

With this page I am trying to get the basic design and layout down before I go on and start drawing all the details. I have a specific idea and 'feel' that I want and the perspective is important to this, so I have been trying various ideas out.

Hey folks. This image is closer to my initial thought and idea. I will play with it a little more until I am happy.

The idea behind my image is the young guy in his vehicle ready to pull out of his garage, leaving home. The traffic is zooming by outside, the vehicles all much bigger and faster than the main characters. Basically he's going out into the big world, ready to face all the challenges.

A few more quick sketches done at work today. I am happy with the one circled in red and will start working with this design.

Hey folks,

This drawing I started drawing up the night before last, in the hope that I would be drawing up my final linework. But it was not to be. I am still not 100% happy with the overall design and feeling of the image. Once I have the layout and perspective etc that I want I will go in and start drawing in all the details, but it first needs to work at this basic stage.

Hey folks,

I've finally started drawing all the details for my image. This pretty much means that I've finally settled on a design and layout for my final image. I just wasn't too happy with the perspective of my previous drawings and the feeling this was creating for the idea that I have, so I think that this should be it. Although saying that, I will still probably shift a few things around when it comes to painting this up, we'll see.
This particular section of my drawing shows the main character, which I'm quite happy with, he turned out very nicely. I will draw the entire image first and then scan it in. Some extra elements will probably be drawn directly on the computer.

very nice concept.... I really like it...

kind of retroistic in away...

like your sketch work ....

suggest you put in some of the traffic elements... seems to add more direction to it all... more of a "Long Journey" kind of feeling...

great stuff...

cant' wait to see more...

norvman: thanks dude, glad you like my sketches (as simple as they are). I definitely plan on adding the traffic elements, thats something I've wanted to do from the start. Basically what I have been doing up till now is just getting the perspective and layout of the whole image to my liking. It's one of those things where you have an idea in your head and not just anything will do, so now that it's there I can concentrate on actually drawing the thing.

This latest image shows the layout of my city. I'm happy with it like this. There will probably be some changes along the way once the colour work starts. I have decided to add in all the rest of the elements, traffic etc, on the computer, this way I can change things and move elements easily if I feel it needs it. Now on with the vehicles.

Busy drawing in all the traffic elements at the moment. I changed the main characters vehicle a little bit, or more precisely the angle of it. I felt this was better to show the direction he will be heading in, namely the mountains and nature in the distance, away from the big city. Hopefully will finish all the vehicles soon and then its on with the painting.

Traffic! I want alot of it in there so I will be drawing a bit more in, then probably duplicating vehicles around once I get to the final painting stage.

I've added more elements to the drawing. I really hope to have a busy traffic environment with all sorts of different vehicles flying by. I also decided to add a figure, a window cleaner. Maybe I will do more figures, will have to see how time goes.

Have begun the colour work, just blocking in at this stage, trying to get the tones I want for my city scape. Once the city is done I will move on to the vehicles.

Hey Kevin, I like your idea and your start. Looks like it'll be a fun image to do. Looking at your initial sketches, I love the one on the giant page where you circled "close to the final idea" I think the boy looking forward works better than the character from the side. I get much more feeling from the sketch than the final character you chose.

luv the main character concept sketch. would it be too much to ask to get the 'blade runner lookin chinese noodle shop guy' in his flying boat? the one from 5th element. i just love how out-of-place he was. just like a real city. there's always some stuff that's old and classy and doesn't fit and gives character.

anyway, great work.
look forward to seeing more!

I've been concentrating on painting the sky and mountains first, I like to work from the background towards the foreground. I might add a few more clouds.

Hey there khemist000: Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. That sketch of the character was actually just a doodle I did when I was playing around with ideas. I chose to have my main character facing in that direction as I wanted him pointing in the direction of his destination, the mountains in the background. To me the 'story' of an image is just as important as the aesthetics of the work itself and sometimes certain elements have to be compromised in order to achieve this, which I hope I have (of course, only the final product will tell). Even in my final line art the characters direction was shifted to face even more in that direction. I actually played around with the composition of my image for quite a while until I nailed all the elements that I wanted, namely the destination clearly in the background as well as showing my characters intention to head towards this point, all in amongst a busy fast paced future city. Thanks again for the comments.

Hey anzibon: I liked that chinese boat in the movie as well, thought it was really cool. I did think of things like that for my image, and may still do, I will see how things go once I am further along with the painting. I have been aiming for a more 'retro' look to my vehicles, the old 50's style cars with lots of chrome trimmings etc, only mine all have rocket engines etc.

Hey! Thatīs so cool idea. Very dinamic... the colors looks so real, I wonder how you gonna draw speed lines and things to give the velocity sensation.

Been a long while since I've had a chance to get back to this painting, and not much time left to finish. Here's a close up of the buildings in the distance. I'm slowly working my way forward.

Still busy with the city, it's going a bit too slow for my liking. Hope to have it finished this week so that I can concentrate on the vehicles etc.

Hey adonihs,

Thanks for the comments, very cool. The buildings have been a bit hectic actually, taken a lot longer than I had hoped and quite tedious as well. It's one of things where I think to myself "why the hell did I chose this to do?", but its a challenge nevertheless. Had a look at the work in your CGPortfolio, very nice indeed, the Kong pics are excellent. :)

Nearing the end of the buildings but still a LOT of work left to do. I still need to sort out proper lighting etc for the scene as a whole, once all the buildings are completed I will tackle this.

This has turned out to be one of those things where I go "why the hell did I decide to do this?". I don't normally draw big city scenes with loads of vehicles, I usually prefer characters. So this has become quite a challenge. Hopefully I can finish this.

The boy in the image is leaving home. His family live in a big city but the boy is venturing into the mountains in the distance, where he would rather be, away from the busy city life.

Yeah I like it alot...

But....If the main element/story in the image is to be the boy leaving home then my suggestion would be to downsize the traffic in general as my eyes are not following anything in particular because the vehicles are the same size almost, maybe make the blue speeder bigger and motion blurred in the foreground /right to add depth. The colors are nice and contrasty but again try and ease a couple into the background for more depth. The bus and the red car draw you in to them because they are the same color to and again detract from the boy

Good stuff though
