Hi everyone,
i recently started on my first detailed car model, i made some cars before, but they were lowpoly cars (for a game).
i'm using the spline method, so i put down the main lines then start creating the spline cage, add a surface modifier...etc
well, here are the first images,
i'll try to update the thread as soon as i can,
so.., any comments or crits are welcome :).

Hey man, i was really intrested in how you are modeling this car! because your certainly not box modeling it like most people would.

Actually, I think most people would not box model cars... Edgemodelling is more fit for that.

And the car looks great so far.

thank you all for the comments,
here's an update,
i added 2 wire pics, but it doesnt really represent the final topology, cos i have a long stack of modifiers that i edit on top of each other to get the final shape.

Hi,

I was at the autoshow here in Toronto last week, and took bunch of photographs of BMW's.

Would you like them as reference images?

hany
03-07-2006, 01:00 PM
sure, that'd be awesome.
a close-up on the head lights would be very useful, as i'm having a hard time finding one.

hany

here's an update,
whats left would be the head and tail lights, and some small details here and there..
gonna try and wrap it up soon,

that's really nice and accurate. i would make the tires thinner, and put better rims on it. that's just a personal taste issue.

03-08-2006, 03:05 PM
I have a lot of high res photographs of BMW tires, but haven't had time to post them yet. I'll do it tomorrow.

hany
03-09-2006, 03:20 AM
thank you K_Digital, i'll keep that in mind,
and thanks in advance mustan9,

here's another test render, just testing out shaders, car paint needs more work, gonna play with it more.
also i decided to make a simple interior,
so more updates coming soon, (as long as my P3 1.2 Celeron, 256mb ram, GF4MX440 machine can handle it) :D.

ver nice... but if the texture of the Rim was the final texture...it's not so nice...(as i see...)

shall we have a closer pic anyway??

Giom

You really worked quick on this one!

Must agree k_digital, your tyre profile needs to come down. Your tyre wall is too thick. The size of the wheel looks big enough, the diameter of the tyre needs to com down to make it a low profile.

But this is looking very good for the amount of time you spent on it.

hany
03-10-2006, 07:37 AM
thank you Mr. Dark, i'll post a closer pic once its all done, as it take ALOT of time to render. ;)
and the Rim material isnt final, i'm still working on it.

Giom, thanks, i adjusted the tires a little, so is it thin enough now?

hi Hany
very good model and shading
and you did it really fast, good job

hany
03-11-2006, 07:20 AM
thanks mahmoud and Giom,
i did my first compositing test, dunno, still need work,
i also started working on the interior,
so more updates soon,

Hey Hany, that looks real good man!

A few pointers though... (I do understand this is a test)

At one glance I could see that your reflections on the car doesn't match the scene, its almost reflecting too much. Maybe if you reduce your reflection amount, this could fix it. Your reflections are also too out of focus and on the window there's just not enough reflecting in them (considering you're surrounded by buildings)

Second, I would have prefered a little more dark shadow under the car... What you've done is good in the sence that it is not a sharp shadow, but very blurry - however, it should go a bit darker. Especially where the tyres touch the ground.

3rd, the back window has no small pillar where the glass is supposed to slide down into the door. It almost looks like a 7 series coupe :)

Fourth, your tyres and wheels looks good, however they're set too deep into the wheel arches. BMW's wheels always sits almost flush whith the body. Just have a look at that.

Keep it up though, you're going places my man!

Thank ALOT Giom, i really appreciate your help :bounce: .

and sorry for not having any updates for a while, i'm busy making the interior (which is not as easy as i thought it would be), but hopefully more updates in the next few days.

thanks again for the help. :)

hany
03-30-2006, 02:07 PM
hey,
i know its been a long while, but i had a very nasty health condition the past few days,
anyways,
i worked a bit on the interior, but i dont think i will be able to finish it on my machine,
so i just made a simple one, just the parts visible from the out side,

here's another test render, still experimenting with VRay,
forgot to set the materials for the wheels, i'll fix that in the next render,
so any comments or crit,..

you want a comment ?

Here it is ! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

Okay and now critics.
The chrome around the sidewindows ... make it chrome :)
Maybe a bit less mirroring for the chassis colour and not so shiny and a maybe a higher resolution for VRay ( Darker areas direct under the car and the tires near the floor.

All in one, i love youre 7er BMW and excuse my bad english.

hany
03-31-2006, 03:15 PM
thanks alot Vizu
and thanks for the crits,
i'll keep those in mind when making the next render.

Ducimus

It's looking good, but I have a few suggestions:

For your scene, you'll need to find a much higher resolution version.

2, your HDR lighitng and reflections take away from the car itselfs, as in there is just too much reflections.

3, your rims need a nice flat machined chromed finish.

hany
04-05-2006, 11:44 AM
thanks Ducimus for the advice,

here's another try,
still having problems with the environment, cant find a good hi-res HDRI image  .
hopefully the next render will be the final one,
any comments or crits are welcome..

Try using a studio lighting setup. The two renders you have with the hdri are really killing the quality of your model. I would recommend a skylight and a directional light with raytraced shadows turned on. Also I would go in and play with your tire, and rim shaders.

What are you using to render it? If you need some good HDRI's you can pm me....

hi everyone,
sorry for being away for a long time, life sucks,
anyways,
i got some new renders, still needs some material fixes here and there, and i'm still trying to get decent lightning,
also the head and tale lights dont look so good, gonna work on those,
well, anymore crits or advice are welcome  .
and if anyone has a nice studio setup, that would be cool.

The modeling all looks very nice. The only thing I don't like is that some of the edges look either too defined or too soft. Overall, good model, good material. Keep working for that render your looking for.

wow, lookin good, some of those scenes looked almost real actually, can't say I see much wrong with it. Keep it up, lookin forward to more renders :)
