View Full Version : THE STORY REEL!_Challenge 2: "THE SWORD FIGHT": Manifestant

Well, let's see if I can possibly do this without a darn proggie crash.

Film for use: Revenge of the Sith (yes, I know.. Star Wars is sooo overdone)
Proggies for use: Premiere, Photoshop, and more than likely, sketching with pencil/paper, since I'm horrible at pure sketching in PS.

This would be difficult for me since I'm limited in viewing of subjects that involve full-fledge sword play unless it was some 70's kung-fu movie. So, I stuck with my first thought of Star Wars. Hope that's alright. Not original, but hey... this is practice and for fun. :D I would like to see what I'm capable of doing, in fact.

*edit*
Here's the part I've been focusing on and instantly came to mind when I seen the topic on hand:
--edit 2-- moved scenes up, and will alter to get two minutes in--end edit 2--
200 INT. MUSTAFAR-MAIN CONTROL CENTER-DAY

View screens EXPLODE around ANAKIN and OBI-WAN as they work their way into the Control Room. The fighting is intense. OBI-WAN is on the defensive as he jumps up on the table view screen in the center of the room.
ANAKIN forces OBI-WAN back into the Conference Room where the quarters are much closer. Sparks fly everywhere. ANAKIN jumps onto the conference table. OBI-WAN slides across the table, knocking ANAKIN over. OBI-WAN grabs ANAKIN’s lightsaber as he falls. OBI-WAN uses the Force to summon his dropped lightsaber. ANAKIN does the same.

202 INT. MUSTAFAR-MAIN CONTROL CENTER-DAY

The battle intensifies.
OBI-WAN and ANAKIN lock sabers. OBI-WAN puts out his hand to use the Force to push ANAKIN away. ANAKIN puts out his hand to block OBI-WAN.
Both combatants are blasted backwards onto the control panels.
They regain their footing and the battle continues. ANAKIN kicks OBI-WAN away.
They battle around the room, and eventually the door to the exterior is knocked open. They continue battling out onto the balcony.

204 EXT. MUSTAFAR-MAIN CONTROL CENTER BALCONY-DAY

ANAKIN forces OBI-WAN down a narrow balcony outside the Control Room. He rips objects off the wall and throws them at OBI-WAN as he pushes him further and further along the walkway.

The balcony ends, and OBI-WAN is trapped. He looks over the balcony and into a river of lava.

ANAKIN cuts apiece of the balcony railing off, along with a control panel.
ALARMS SOUND, and a protective ray shield around the superstructure disappears. It tumbles into the molten abyss, disappearing in a puff of smoke. A small pipe connects the Control Center to the Main Collection Plant. OBI-WAN has no choice but to tightrope-walk out across the lava river while fighting ANAKIN.

205 EXT. MUSTAFAR-MAIN CONTROL CENTER BALCONY, PIPE ACROSS LAVA RIVER, MAIN COLLECTION PLANT-DAY

ANAKIN, following OBI-WAN, jumps down onto the flexing pipe, lands, and resumes fighting.

206 INT. MUSTAFAR-PIPE ACROSS LAVA RIVER-DAY

OBI-WAN and ANAKIN work their way across the small pipe, fighting ferociously as they go. OBI-WAN slips, throws his lightsaber up in the air, grabs on to the pipe, swings around, grabs on to an upper pipe, retrieves his lightsaber, and lands back on the original pipe. They continue to fight across the pipe until they reach the Main Collection Plant.
I do still intend using reference from the final printed film, especially if I get the OK from Roberto to use the soundtrack to sync it.
--edit 2--response is to not use soundtrack. therefore, I grabbed a few loops from Flashkit--end edit 2--

Good luck to all entrants!

Panels 1 & 2

I hope I've done these right. If not, oh well... it's a learning experience. :D
I'll eventually combine all the panels for the full storyboard.

Hmmmm...
I want to say "sorry for not posting every day", but it appears I'm the only one doing the challenge. Oh well... that's ok. I get experience, eh?

Here's what I've done this evening.

Time: 3 hrs
Total: 5 hrs 45 min

I'm gonna end the panels here. I wanted to carry this through to the exterior scene, but that is going to be time consuming considering I've yet to animate this AND I have other things I'm working on. All-in-all, I really enjoyed drawing goofy toons, reguardless that I didn't do a thorough "sword fight". :D

Thanks, Wiggin, for the encourgement.

Keep going man!

it is looking pretty dramatic already. Do you plan on doing any panned shots?

but it appears I'm the only one doing the challenge.

the votings will be very much favouring you, then. Easy win!:scream:

If I was to do the exterior shot, there would have been an aerial pan/dolly what-not, but I'm cutting this short. I plan on animating the area which have arrows on them (only objects, not camera), though I just noticed I forgot to add arrows to the final panel in which the characters fly away from each other (the white glow representing the force impact which will grow). Where you see the "sparks", those will be slightly animated. The "Force Duel" of the hands will be animated (panel 14), but no pans in this cut of the reel. I really wanted to do one. What I really want to show-off and see if I can do it, is the saber show-down where the characters spin the sabers. I practiced on a different comp, but it didn't show up right. So, I hope I figure a way to do it the way I want when I begin the reel.

As for the votes... I seriously doubt there will be one for this challenge. But, that isn't thwarting me from finishing what I can. This may be cheesy as hell, but I'm having a thrill.

Thanks for keeping up with this, Mu.

Having issues for the week trying to compress this, so I'm gonna have to quickly read up on what my issue is so I can get this out for the evening.

Sorenson 3 (QT) is ranking 35MB for merely 33 seconds!
DivX and Xvid are coming out really nasty (pixelled, smeared, greyed, or crashing WinXP when test clip is viewed). Tried every-which-way to set this up since default makes the comp cough.

I've done a horrible job with this, but you know what? Who here hasn't learned from mistakes? :wavey:

I'll see if I can read fast enough for how to set-up Divx and/or have a bud hold my hand through the process. For the past two years, I could never set it up correctly with the same issues.

For now, the clip (minus the titles at beginning/end) is only 33 secs and horribly synced.

*edit*
Yikes! I'm still using Divx Pro 4.1. I'm gonna download the trial version of the latest 6.1.1 and see if that makes a difference. :D

I had fun. So much fun that I'm glad no one else joined this challenge because this entry absolutely reeks of cheese. But, ey... I've learned alot for future projects, such as encoders suck when you don't update them nor read the directions. :D

Have a laugh, folks. It's on me.

What on earth are you talking about?!?

This is absolutely terrific! I like how you separated the foregorund elements and animated them. The shot with the telekinetically moved light saber is great! I think this is the way an animatic is meant. So close to the look of a finished shot that everyone gets a clear idea what the final result will look like.

I did not find a shot I am not happy with in this animatic.

Now where's this voting thread?:scream:

great work, man!
