I want to have a ground geometry of some sort (representing a desert/sand) and a bump moving over it, as if there's something underneathe, but cant think of the best way to do it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can animate deformers to do that. Any of those will do it - Lattice, Sculpt, Wrap, Wire, all of the non linear deformers, and the Soft modification tool. Just choose the one that’s the most suitable for the shape of the bump

In case you are not familiar with those, they all have their own controls of modifying the geo. I’ll give you a quick tut example with one of them. Lets pick up the Soft Modification deformer as it is easily accessible directly from the tool box (the 7th icon)

First create a NURBS plane for a ground and in its Inputs in the channel box change the Width, Patches U, and V, all to 20.

Reset the Soft Mod tool just in case if the default settings were changed. To do that, with nothing selected double click its icon and in the options click the Reset button.

Click with the tool on the plane and pull it up to make a bump

Click on the tiny light blue circle (looking like a pin head) and the manipulator will change to arrows only and a big red circle that indicates the influence field around it.

Drag the manipulator to move the bump on the ground at the beginning of your animation.

Open the channel box and click the softMod1 node in the Inputs. This must be selected (highlighted) when you key the animation. This also will switch the Soft Mod manipulator to its default and you have to click the little pin again to switch it back.

At frame 1 press s to key the start of the animation, then move the timeline to the last frame, drag the soft mod to the final position of the bump and press s again.

That’s it. Play the animation and enjoy the moving bump

make your ground(enough uv or vertices on ground plane), apply sculpt deformer(animation menu set> deform>create sculpt deformer).

set mode ; stretch, using max displacement for underground moving things size.

make child to moving object.

good luck

Yea that will work pretty much the same like the soft mod and may be even easier.
I’ll just add one detail to the sturmkim’s instructions in case Hamfam is not aware of.
Before animating the sculpt deformer open the Outliner and group the sculptor and its stretch origin locator, then animate the group. Animating only the sculptor won’t work
