View Full Version : Translucent & transparent material at the same time. How???

Hi,

Here's a material that's getting me crazy. A transparent & translucent material at the same time. This material in real world is like in Oragne juice, Frosted plexi glass, a piece of cloth. A material that when gets thinner, you can see through it. I can make a translucent material, and a transparent one, but I can't make a material that combines both. When making a translucent material with SSS, transparensy is impossible. I've tryed many renderes, Brazil, Finalrender, Vray, Mentalray, got no luck. I also made a "Blend" material that mixes a translucent material and a transparent one, but it's acurate.

Anyone had the same problem? Am I doing anything wrong? Is there a certain parameter I'm not handeling well? If you can make this material on any software please let me know how.

Here's a reference to help you imagine what I'm saying. look close at the streaming down orange juice. Imagine if it's a little more thinner, it will be almost transparent.

Heya Ahmed,

In vray this effect is controlled using the fog and translucency parameters. The fog effect will make a colour darker depending on how deep the model is. Hi John,

I know about the fog and absorbtion and everything. But try checking the translucency check box after making a certain fog value (Vray). The object will have no transparency. And that's what I'm talking about. I need to make a semi transparent object that is translucent.

Heya Ahmed,

Translucency is by far the most unintuitive mataerial setting in vray and is really heavily dependant on the size of your scene so it's not really artist friendly in the way the brazil wax material is for example. I'm in the process of writing a tutorial on vray fog and translucency so hopefully it'll help a bit.
