Hi every one,
I am very exited about this challenge. This is a first concept about someone fleeing his devasted homeland with his sailboat, which marks the begining of a new journey..

I've been very busy lately so i couldn't post anything. However, I decided to continue with this concept, but i'll probably change the angle of view to a closer one.

I've started the modeling of the sailboat. It will be one of these types of boats used for races such as the vendée globe or the volvo race specially designed for fast and long distance travel.

Ooh, dramatic concept. No real comments yet, looking forward to more!

interesting concept there. why not use a faster boat when he is fleeing away? (just curious)

Nice idea! I like your yacht design a lot too

Clorets

Thanks for your comments, I appreciate a lot.

@thepineman: The boat is designed to go very fast and can challenge the worst sea conditions. Also, because its a sailboat, it does not require fuel.

I'll be posting modeling updates very soon.

I added some equipment so it can start to look like a real sailboat. I'll texture the whole thing only when i'll be done the modeling which should take a week or two..

Hi;
Nice modeling on those boats!
Good luck to you!

I like the design. Did you have a reference?

Clorets

For reference, I mainly use pictures from http://www.vendeeglobe.fr/uk/ and some specialised sail equipment companies such as http://www.harken.com/

Here are some equipment that i modeled. I will integrate them later to the boat.

Here I integrated the previously modeled parts to the boat and I also made some other minor changes. I found out that modeling all these little parts takes more time than expected, still a lot to do...

wow very nice man, I always wanted to model a boat like that. u doing a great job, and the concept is quite interesting. what´s your ideas for the background?

Clorets
03-17-2006, 10:59 PM
Thanks for the comments!

@bkeiser3d: It will probably be a just a regular guy wearing a big coat and doing some manoeuvre or looking at the land.

@brazz: I have not decided yet. If i follow the original concept, i'll put a nuke explosion far away.

I'll try to post some hand made sketches if i have time (and if i find a scanner).

Some more modeling. I also tested some basic colors for the parts. Tell me what you think!

That's really some excellent work. I love the attention to detail.
As far as color testing goes, just remember that there's only 2 colors in this world, red and ugly.
Hint, hint, hint.....

I put asside the boat and started to think about the water. As I want to to a close shot of the boat, the water needs to be as much detailed and realistic as possible. Here I applied a custom made diffuse texture (I'll post it later), which is also used for as a displacement map, with some prodecural bump mapping.

Nice shader on the sea!

The deatails on the boat are fantatsic but the main hull shape seems far too simplistic in comparison, I think there needs ot be some more detail to the hull.

Good work, good luck!

Ooooooo the sea, now that's a tough one to get right. I can't model it or paint it, but it looks good so far.
As far as the hull goes, I don't know, I can't really see adding too much detail to that myself. It looks like it could be made of fiberglass in which case you would expect it to be smooth and rounded to help it cut through the water.
I also think that the contrast between the smoothness of the hull and the sharp edged detailing of the rigging, steering, etc, makes it look really good and artistic.

Great boat modeling :thumbsup: Also the ocean looks already cool.

I`m looking forward to see more :bounce:

Good luck and have fun :)

@Crin: The hull can't be very detailed for this type of boat, but with a proper texture and some more accessories, it should look good. Thanks for the comments!

@Woody: It is indeed difficult, getting the right texture is the main problem, I would not want my final image to be spoiled by a bad water, I'll keep improving it. Thanks. As for the hull you are right and a think it will look good at the end.

@Nomad: Thanks for the support.

I applied a basic texture map on the boat and worked some more on the water texture. I did this render just to see how the boat and the sea would match together. C&C are welcome.

The gold sails and red hull look really good together. I like the way the water behind the sailboat becomes greener in the turbulance.

Excellent sea there! It will look even better when the wake and splashes from around the boat are added :applause: can't wait to see more!

03-26-2006, 10:46 PM
I love that water. Not only is it believable, but it looks beautiful. I agree with M477 in that some froth on the surface around the boat's wake will enhance the realism. Also, I don't think it's necessary to have two sets of mainsheets.

Wonderful stuff, and an intriguing scene.

Clorets
03-28-2006, 07:44 PM
Thank you all for the great comments.

@mdavid: i agree with the two mainsheets, i just found it looked better and i'm not heading for 100% accuracy on the model (the proportions of the hull, mast are already inaccurate).

@m477: thanks!, I will add the splashes and wake later. I'will finish the boat modeling and textureing and then attack the skipper modeling.

@Vedic-kings: thanks!

@-WOODY-: thanks!

@Selina42: thanks: i try to do my best with the colors.

@tuck: thanks!

I understand. You will have the benefit of the boat looking more radical and therefore more futuristic the way you are rigging it and I see now that has to make it more interesting. I think you're doing a really superb scene here and wish you well

Looks great Mustapha. Hard to offer any useful critique at this point. Can't wait to see how it looks with lights. Mostly curious as to how the sky will affect the sea and the overall color of the piece. Care to offer some insight on how you're making that beautiful sea?

really beautiful work...love the backstory/concept...such a great job modeling the boat and rendering the ocean...I'm looking forward with hightened anticipation to seeing your characters. --Also, I think the wind would push your boat sails either toward the foreground in the direction it is tilting/traveling, or, toward the bow on the side it is now favoring...maybe that's coming since it doesn't have any wrinkles etc...looking forward to see ing more! Good luck!

I've been kept busy during the past days, sorry for that. I've found time to update the sailboat. The boat about 80-85 % done. I still need add some more details and work on the textures. I just made a basic texture for the sail so it does not seem too dull.
Hope you like it!

Clorets

@mdavid: thank you again for the support, i've seen in your portfolio your model. Very nice job.

@xyzboy: The water was not very difficult to do; a plane with a diplacement map for the overall shape. Then add a bump map and some fractal noise bump. Then a diffuse map for the texture and a noise modifier applied on the plane(in max). Finally, a raytrace reflection. I'll post my finalized textures maps later.

@oceanbluesky: Thanks, the character is comming, i moght start working on it this week.

I managed to work some more on my entry in spite of my final exams... So here is a general render of the scene. I am still thinking about the camera angle and the background elements. I did a basic background and splashes in photoshop. I am also working on the character and the boat is not finished yet. C&C are welcome.

I set up the uv maps and painted a first texture map for the body of the character. I'll work on it more later.

It's been a long time since I posted anything. I decided I had to complete what I started. I changed and added many things. This is the complete boat model(i can't thing of anything else to add), i changed the sails textures and you can notice that i added a zodiak trailing behind. When twinking with photoshop i came up with these colors which i feel are right for the scene. I am currenlty working on the character and I'm trying to find a way to incorporate proper splashes and a decent backgournd. C&C are welcome!

@Giokr:Thanks for the reply!

I try to add some depth to the image by applying a light blue gradient to the image. I also adjusted the depth of field from the z-depth map.
I'm soon post the textures used for the sea, boat and sails.
