Maybe this will be the try, where I actually finish. And May just seems so far away, especially because we have snow in denmark now, and a lot of it. As I know the sun will shine in May, and I will be drinking beers in the garden, this really must to be in a distant future...The month of May, I mean!!
So I just HAVE to be able to pull it off this time;)

Hamid> Iīm working on it, allright....but I really find it hard to come up with anything original;)
MichaelMotion> Letīs do that, indeed.
Anyone knows about camera plugins for max, that can simulate the effect of bended forms and so on buildings etc....you know, you are on a street, and at the same time you can se the top of the buldings, because of a very wide angle...and the buildings are curved towards the disapearing point in the sky....you just CANīT make that effect with the normal cameras in max, because they donīt work physically correct...:(

Hi Henrik! :)
You could check the Lume distortion lens shader in MR - it gives a pillow effect that is quite good.

Ok...this is the concept. And I know I did this sketch too fast for any of you to know what is going on. But we on a cliff side. The widthness of the image makes you see both the top and the buttom of the cliff at the same time.
A lot of distortion going on here;) There are a tree on the side, in which we have this nest of some sort. Mom and Daddy Bird is watching there child on his first flight away from the nest. Maybe Iīll make the birds more human like in their facial expressions, daddy with a little sad expression...Donīt know yet.
-AND HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO MAKE SUCH A DISTORTION IN THE LENS... I know for sure that max canīt do that in itīs standard cameras...maybe Iīll just build the distortion into the objects...:D
Crits please..;)

Hmmm...that would force me to learn MR, and that I just canīt manage these days. Too fed up with duties and such crap...But maybe Iīll make a search on the subject, and make the image in layers and use it for only those objects that needs it...MR, I mean.

It looks awsome
:D
Good luck
I like your concept. Especially the ligthing and the feel of infinity and the uknown journey to come.
I do think though that the story with the bird leaving the nest could be more articulate but hey.. You can proberbly fix that in 3d::
Looking foward to follow your progress.

Hehe...I know...and it would be a shame to let them disappear in water and stuff. But...actually my idea includes the posibility of them, the birds, being dragons...but that depends on how well things turns out, and if I can find the time. But if I decide to make dragons instead, then I donīt think size will be an issue anymore...;)
Thanks, and Iīll jump into your thread right away.

doffer> Thanks man....;) please donīt kill me to gain skills though.
Jais> Yeah, I know...the whole bird/tree setup became a little doll. I sure wants to make the scenery more interesting, plus putting it more up front.
Tommy> Thx;)...
Well, enough of talking. Letīs start with the...dragon? Do I have the time? Hmmm...I really should decide now, as the tree and so should "know" which kind of creature will be sitting on it, to know the thickness og branches and such details...hmmm
Dragons it is...I LOVE DRAGONS...and itīs about time I make a fully detailed dragon in 3D;)

After a quick decision in my last post, I have started on the dragon. You really donīt want to see wires, īcause they suck;)
But I wanted to just get some forms down very fast, cutting pulling...shaping. And as this is going to be a still, I donīt care now...
And with this speed I actually think I can make a dragon model pretty fast...maybe by the end of next week, it will be finished...and then I just need a tree and a sky and an ocean....maybe I CAN do this in the time given;)....

Hi, Kragh!
Not a bad modelling start. But I guess it needs a lot more detail before it looks real and "fleeshy". Right now it look smooth and metallic. Keep going.

An update on wing modelling. Trying to make some believable mucles, but still a long walk ahead;)
Also the "fingers" needs a lot more shape to them, now they are still too cylindrical.

That's a nice pair of wings, Kragh. Actually I'm thinking about modeling some similar wings for my flying creatures. Looking forward to next WIP.
I really like the way the anatomy of the arms and fingers fades into the wings. Very nicely done.
The head looks kinda "just blocked out" up so im looking forward to see updates on that.

Right now I enjoy the legs. I have used the human leg as reference, but not that precise. Iīm not totally satisfied with the toes, but Iīll move on. All such details is better off waiting for the whole model to take shape. Who knows, these toes might look fine on the finished model;)

Body in progress. Legs has been corrected, specially the toes. Yeah, I know I said I would not touch it before later in the process...but I did, alright!
Takes forever. I really have no designs for this dragon, which means I go alot back and forth in the process. But the result so far is as I want it to be...overall.

Looks fine overall. But the upper part above the legs looks unnatural to me. The edges are too sharp and flat.

I see what you mean. But itīs mainly because you think "Flesh", and I think scales. I thought about crocodiles, and their surface have some very sharp angles like this.
I think Iīll make horns and such, following this line...
Thank you;)

M477> thx. The project is already much harder than first calculated. So when or where this will actualy become a dragon, that is unknown...;)
asbassie> I really try to make et soft and with alot of details under the skin. But as I donīt know or have Zbrush, I will only take it to a certain degree. The rest will be texture work...Looking forward to that, btw...;)
Next step is the arms, as I donīt want to work more on the body, until I have attached arms and wings...and neck.

Yeah, really looking forward to both displace and texture this creature...There are so much creative freedom in a dragon, as noone has any rights on it...the posibillities are endless. YEAH...but man, I take my time in the modelling process...tweaking alot, and too early in the process. I mean, when the model is finished, I will still tweak the overall apearence.

Hi.:) You're going great so far! The musculature on the legs looks really good. I like everything else you've modeled as well so far, but I have to say I don't like the head very much. It looks like you did it quickly then moved on to other things judging by your comments - which means you'll come back to it though!
Looking forward to updates.:)

Have made the front legs, minus feets. Also attached the wings on the body, which makes the dragon beginning to look like...a dragon:D
LOTS of problems in the mesh, minor stuff, but they are there. Also still a lot og work in the proportions and musculature...
But I hope you get an idea of where I heading. I really want this dragon to look like it actually has muscles to support lift off;)
And then he went to bed...
MartinNielsen
03-21-2006, 01:28 PM
Yes, it begins to look like a dragon now. But I agree that it needs some more work. Especially the thigh and shoulder connection parts look like they could use some refinement.
Kragh
03-21-2006, 04:02 PM
Martin> Yeah, the shoulder looks like crap at the moment, and the arm has a bump that looks like the elbow;)
Takes so damn long, this dragon, because I use an hour here and there, besides a lot of other duties...but May is still far away, so Iīm pretty positive about reaching my goals. Iīm just looking so much forward to the texturing part, really a big job to be done in that area...
Btw, I better add, that I have posed it in a relaxed position, the arms is not pointing downwards...as I havenīt made a creature like this before, and surely want it to be good for skinning and bones, I think, but donīt know, that this will be a good basic pose.
Also the wings is totally flat, and I look forward to posing them in a more natural position...
MartinNielsen
03-21-2006, 08:27 PM
Yeah I know, time (or the lack of time) can be a problem. Fortunately I've some free time on my hand. Just finished my final university project in level design for games.
I think the basic pose is ok for skinning and texturing, and then add a more natural pose afterwards.
Looking really good so far. I'll be watching and making comments here and there when time allows :)

I'll wait for texturing :)
Good luck to u!:bounce:
Ace Dragon! He's alive!!
Texturing.. Yeah good luck on that one. :p Just a suggestion on the teeth if I may.. I was looking at some images of dinos and noticed that their teeth are not necessarily set in a line like most other animals/reptiles.. So if you did fancy delaying texturing for some more modelling, then I would say move some of the teeth around a bit and think how they might lock into the opposing jaw, you could have some indents in the top jaw where the larger canines would rest etc.. Just a thought :D
Great work though, the musculature and wings are superb :buttrock:

Hi again yaīll
(yeah, I may be danish, but I sure know how to be trendy when I write american....right)
So, this is what Iīve got for an update... I have made a neck/tail piece, and have unwrapped it. Here I show 4 pieces stiched together...
I started out by just modelling the nech, but after a while I began to realize what the fuck I was doing...and that I never would be finished doing that...and IF i DID finish, I would have to unwrap it also...
So this was the solution. I hope Iīll be able to do it this way, with a prober result...weīll see;)
Also worked on the head, added some more horns, played dentist for a day etc...you know how it is;)

martin> I believe this solution will actually work...But it will include a lot of welding work, as Iīll have to make it part of the existing mesh....There are a neck underneath the scales, and that will be removed...
Stefan-Morrell> Yeah, everything has become a little too tiny for those scales...but thatīs because I had to scale up the scales to have to cover the existing neck...It is just to test how it will look, aprox.

hiya, I think the body is a bit too small and the dragon seems very top heavy. Try for bit more bulk in the stomach/legs/arms.

Nice modeling of dragon! It'll be looking great with texture!
I like the level of detail.
As it is now the neck looks a litlle too long but on the other hand I think that it should be shorter because you can create quite a dynamic pose with it.
But nice stuff.
Keep it up mate.

doffer> Thanks, mate...:D
Versiden> As said, these scales is just smashed upon the existing model, which already had a neck...therefore I had to scale it up a bit, which has destroyed the proportions...But thanks for poiting it out, Iīll sure watch out...
Tigrenka> Yeah, I hope so... Thx.
jais> a little too long, you say...hmmm...maybe, Iīll take it into consideration...:D But as I said to versiden, this might help, when I attach the scales for real, and remove the underneath mesh...

Nord> Pose...man, would I like to pose it now...but it would just be a complete waste of time right now. But yeah, I would also myself like to see him/her pose.
____________________________________
Tonight I have worked more on making the scales an actual part of the mesh, and it looks pretty good. I have also scaled up the legs alot, as they really had become too small for this heavy weighted creature. Looks better now.
And then I have searched for pictures/textures...Elephants, Rhinos, Lizards, Snakes, Crocodiles. Just to have a lot of stuff to choose from. I think the elephant wrincles will be a great breaker for all these scales. But it will be lots of tries, not sure where Iīm heading.
And then I found 20 pictures of something I donīt have a clue what is.
I know this: They cost(the items on the pics) 25$ a piece, and they will make GREEEEEAT scales on the top of the neck...
Again there will be some days now where I canīt work on it, as I have my daughter, and my girlfriend will also join in...and then dragon making becomes highly non-interesting...
See ya all with an update in the start of next week. Maybe before, if I find some hours here and there...

I have had too much to do, to work on this creature for over a week. Maybe it was good, cause I saw a lot of "wrongs".
Worked on proportions a lot, scaled up the wings, legs and head. Have made a "hand" for him. Still some problems with the "arm", but Iīm aware of them;).
Remember, this is NOT an actual pose, but itīs the most relaxed position I could come up with for later "boning" and skinning...
well, this is MUCH harder to put into my existing schedule, than I had dreamed of. But I still think I can finish in time.

The tail scales are now attaced, and more details has been added to the arm and legs. Horns on the torso also.
This is simply the most detailed model I have ever created, and Iīm actually pretty satisfied so far. But Iīm also really looking forward to the texturing part now. So what is still missing on this? The head has to be attached on the body, and the scales has to continue on the bag to get the neck and tail connected by scales. And then I need to work a little on the fingers inside the wing, especially the tips which arenīt even closed.
So lots to do still;)
But Iīm getting there, thatīs for sure...

_______
Tonight I have closed the tail tip...yeah, I know, it sounds lame to even mention that kind of work.
But watch all those scales, and find a good and clean way of ending such mesh in a tail tip?!?!?!?;)
So it was actually an effort worthy, and it became rather good. Also I have made the scales on the back, and created more horns on the legs.
Actually I only miss one thing now...attaching the head...
After that I will use the rest of my life unwrapping him, but thatīs another story...next wip will be of a finished, untextured model, stay tuned...:D

But it really presents it self better without texture, thatīs for sure;)

IMHO the scales need to be a little disturbed by some jitter noiz to not look so uniform. :curious:
Anyway I wish I can model like that one day :D
Great work so far

A very nice and detailed char. I really like the way you added details to that dragon. I love models which are complex before they are textured:)
..Maybe it`s because i`m still better @ modeling that texturing :D

Thx again:D
stefgrafx> Thanks mate, the impressive thing is my stupidness when it comes to butt ****ing the details.
FlaminGlow> Read above...;)
Nomad> Yeah, you are very right. And I will do it...:D Thanks
Silgrin> Me too:D Or, actuall the past half a year, I have improved a lot on texturing because I have worked on a big animation movie for a firm, and now I work for the gaming industry. So I am actually pretty good now;) Just have to get used to the idea of me being able to actually make a descent texture;)
____________
Ok, there will be an update later tonight of the finished model, I believe. I have already attached the head, and have made some more details on the legs. And when my daughter sleeps in aprox 2 h., I will finish the wings and do an overall touch up. There are lots of stuff to improve, but I really think I can do the rest in the texture...
6-7 h., I will upload the finished model...:D (NO TEXTURE, just model;))

Matt> Thanks a LOT!! Iīm trying to rig him at the moment....AAAAAAAAAARGH
I have never done a real rig before, and I think he deserves it...I have been very frustraited by one constraint type, untill I found the solution yesterday. So I just canīt wait until Iīm free from work and can continue with my new knowledge:D
Womgoose> Yeah...the unwrapping part. As said before the scales has been unwrapped, so the worst part has been done early in the process...;) And I sure hope all the model details will add to the texture, and not just make a total chaos out of the overall apearence...
____________
My girlfriend is coming today, and she will take a digital camera with her. Thatīs right, I have no camera:( And then itīs time to take pictures of textures out there, in the real world. I just canīt find all I need with google. Looking forward to that part(the part where my girlfriend is coming, ofcourse;))
And as said above, the rigging process is going in the right direction. I have used several DAYS on making things, and the deleting it all again because I got more knowledge...at present, the tail, neck, body and backfeet has been rigged, and in a pretty complex way, constraint wise.
The wings are going to be crazy. The skin has to fold when the wing is not streched out. And Iīm not sure how I will do that...I do have some solutions though, just not sure which will be best, if any...
Iīm just not a character animator, and have NO knowledge in this stuff. Exiting!!
Iīll be back with an update some day. I have stopped planning anything, as Iīm really too much out on unknown waters, to really know what is coming. MY journey has bagun....right;)

_____________
To rig this bastard is a lot more challenging than I would have ever dreamed of...Seriously.
But Iīm still working on it from time to time, whenever I find some hours.
I was out with my girlfriend(and her cam), taking pictures of ground and trees. Lots of tees, actually...So now I have what I need for that part. The only thing I miss is rock(not the music genre...or...well, ALSO the music genre), which isnīt easy to come by in a land on a foundatuion of limestone;) We DO have ONE island based on rock/cliff, but itīs out in the middle of the ocean(as most islands), and I really havenīt got the time to do that kind of a trip. So I guess google is the answer again....;)
See ya

And I'm in need of rock as well - in both ways... :buttrock:
Kragh
04-22-2006, 12:40 PM
Yeah, Iīm alive, thanks for the concerns;)
Decided to unwrap for a while, and found out that some of the scales, where the have been attached to the rest of the mesh, has melted its uvw with the mesh also. Not a big issue, Iīll solve it. But it means that those sections canīt be selected by the + sign itself, which is a pain. But the uvw are still correct though....
The head is half way done in unwrapping. Why do I always underestimate a given task....this is just a crazy model. Should have stuck to the birds as in my original concept...;)
NAAAAH...
That dragon is just looking better and better! Loving the scales, reminds me of a spiny fence lizard I had for a pet when I was young - only massive! :p

I just love to unwrap. If it hadnīt been for that part of 3D, I just donīt think I would do 3D at all.
BLEH
Ok, got sick and tired of rigging, so I decided to start unwrap. When I modeled the head I did not give a damn about that. Which meant that every single horn was fucked up, when we talk about UVWs. But now itīs done. Only the teeth is missing, but Iīll use a different unwrapping technique on those, which mean I can do them very fast. But thatīs only because I only need details at the root of them.
I think, before I go to sleep, Iīll begin on the texture for the head...yeah

Hey Henrik, glad to hear you are back -- that's a great unwrap too...also one of my least favorite things to do. Looking forward to seeing more -- would be interesting to see what you come up with if this model were taken through ZBrush, as you said you were considering. Could be cool -- Highend3D posted a new set of alpha brushes for download, a few are made especially for reptiles.
Good luck!

oceanbluesky> Right now I would love to be able to put it through zbrush...but nope, canīt do this time. Maybe after the contest is over. Also think Iīll rework the head some day, just got some ideas today, after seing another model at work.
medunecer> Great you can get inspireded by this way of unwrapping. Think itīs pretty ordinary, actually, but it works.
martin> Yeah, there are some areas, but none of them has made any problems yet. I am working on the texture at the moment(well, not now, at work;)), and it seems fine. I just got a new addition to my libary for this creature....turtles. Tortoise. Land turtles...giant creatures with great scales on the shell. I was talking to my girlfriend and complaining about not being able to find big, solid scales in high resolution. Then she asked if I had looked for turtles....bleh....They were exactly what I missed:D
great to have a girl who can contribute to my work!!! (yeah, she follows this thread as well;))

Yeah, you sure have some works to unwrap in your thread;) I hope it doesnīt kill your motivation to do all that unwrapping. I know that itīs that part I hate the most. It simply destroys the joy of doing 3D...
I havenīt worked on the dragon for some days, has done other works(2D concepts) but right now Iīm sick Hope to feel better soon. I promise to have an update on the texture work soon.

Hey Henrik, nice chess-texture there:thumbsup::)
UV's really just needs to be done.. its so trivial, but hey! A good uv-set is time saved in texture, so its all about prioritizing (however that's spelled).
The dragon is really nice, and its going to get even nicer with the texture (and you know you have to do a nice translusency effect in them wing'ies:)). So far its great.. really nice!
keep it up!
