Awesome work as usual, you're the compositing wizard ;)
wow what a big dramatic change, very believable. I think there's a little too much haze in the distance and the text on the ground can be improved.
oh yeah, might wanna take out the reflection of the tree on the rear window of the car infront of that mustang(?) on the left side.

Thanks alot for cretique. I updated the picture so hit refresh if there is a cache problem.
GFX: Thanks alot for kind words. I made haze more transperant. I like the fog actually, but it seams like it doesn't work well with the sky. Ill try to figure something out. Also thanks for reflection - really helped. Tommorow Ill try to shoot another plate. Hopefully there gonna be less cars and overcast, so I will be able to take some of the cars off.
HellRender: Thanks for minivan. I made it a little darker. I'll try to play with levels more as far as van goes. I think the problem is in the ground. I darkened the road a little.
ThirdEye_01: Thanks alot!!! More updates are comming soon.

Wow! Very cool!
I actually think the text on the street is perfect! But the only 2 things that tells me this is fake is 1. the haze, 2. the hard edges of some trees.
Other then that... perfect!

Well I dont want to touch fog untill the 3d compositing stage. It might still hold up on close-ups. This is entire background, so you won't see the whole thing in the frame. I do a 2272x1520 painting. And the thing is gonna be probably HD720 or less.
I updated the tree line so hit refresh button once again =)))
Also here is a closeup on treeline -

Hi DSedov,
I dunno nothing bout compositing/matte painting stuffs and it's kinda rare to find some kind of works here. So I'm all exiting to see this:bounce:
Great job so far:applause: and most likely would be more & more perfect as you progress:thumbsup:
If I may give you crits would be:
1. the new block structure you added on upper left seems out of scale comparing to the surroundings, and looks a bit flat too.
2. as FeRdI said some hard edges.
3. I like the fogs/clouds, but to me they should be higher above the scene, I dunno not weather expert here...
4. the 'No Driving...' text seems doesnt belong on the same plane with the other text and street lines, I understand it maybe because you try to make the text not too perfect.
5. the space between the trees on the horizon looks too blurred.
What do you think?
Anyway could you tell me what apps do you use for this?
How the h*ll you made all of those clouds/fogs? Awesome!
Can't wait for some updates :bounce:

I noticed one thing. The big red pole you removed left a sign behind. You can see it floating on the left side, it says "Victoria" I think. Thought you might like to know. Otherwise, GREAT WORK!

bigjko: Thanks alot for comments. I went this morning to look what up with that pole, and that sign is on another small pole that is there. There is a small area just below "victoria" sign that is almost perpendicular to the camera plane.
raden: Wow! Thanks alot for so many comments! I'll try to fix everything you pointed out.
As far as software goes - I use Photoshop and Maya for 3d elements. For the sky I used part photograph, and some of it is painted.
Now it comes to matching the camera. I spend so much time yesterday, probably about 3 or 4 hours just to place the camer. Was really pissed off. Then I went to the street I shot it on and saw that they the white line for the bike lane (the one on the right) is not parallel to the divider line. Damn the cityhall =) Here is a small screenshot for matching: (now I see how wrong was I about the letters on the ground =)))

Looks very good.
You should write a tutorial on how you made the painting!
Are you going to remove those "floating" telepone lines from the treeline?
Keep up the good work, cant wait to see the final product.

DivideByZero: Yeah the telephone poles =) I new they were there and I was about to remove them, when my gf called =)
As far as tutorial goes. I have written one for the snow scene I did some time ago. I can't publish it right now, because it will be in european magazine Grafik+Video in January. After that I'll make it available online.

I just have a few quick questions, not crit. I think it looks great!
You removed ALOT of trees and crap on the left side of the screen. Is this composition related? Was it just too busy? Did it not allow for enough clouds to effect the mood? Or was it in the way of a comp? Like is it in the path a ship that is about to land?
Just wondering.

smfjersey : Most of the changes are composition related and driven by my will to add alot of CG stuff on the background.
BTW, I finally made an almost perfect camera match in Maya. Letters happen to be just fine. Now I'll start working on animation and different cg parts that I'd want to add

Cool D!
I really anxious about your anim:bounce:
Must be really interesting:lightbulb
Btw could you be so kindly writing us tuts on how to do this kind of thing esp. on matching cam? I never doing compositing before so it'll help me alot.
Please let me know when your snow scene tut be online. Would be much appreciated.
Thanks D!

raden L I will defenatelly write a tutorial on this. Though Im not the most educated person on this subject, but I'll write about everything I learned.
Here is a little animatic test. Im still in doubd whether I want the ship to actually land or float. Im still open to new ideas
Quicktime Sorenson anim: Quicktime Sorenson Animatic (http://www.3dennis.com/animatic.mov)
Im still in process of uploading, so if the video is not here please be patiant. It will be there in 13 min after I do this post.

wow, I can't wait to see this done.
My concern is about the stillness of the background. Everything but the ship is gonna be absolutely still and it might look weird. Are you going to somehow ad some other things moving? For exapmple the trees, if an alien ship is landing nearby, it's gonna create a lot of wind from its engines, maybe even enough to make the cars shake. How are you going to deal with that?

first I will create flying debris and papers, also as I said before - painting is 2k and Im will probably do final in D1 NTSC or HD720 si I will have camera panning. Im still concirned about the trees, and dont really know how I'll do this. Im thinking of going tomorrow and shoot the trees with my XL1 and the composit them on top. But its not really windy lately.

Heya D!
Just watched it here. Lots of potential:lightbulb
Personally I'll go with floating ship, more dynamic with all the flying thingies all around & shadows on the ground. If the ship actually landed, its something like 'that's it.'
I see karabo has a point there. However I wouldnt put much attention on the trees movement since then you should base your ship anim on the trees movement right?
How about you decide an entrance point. The point where the ship go through the clouds where it'll be the first spot our eyes catch it. This point would give us idea on how high the clouds are from the ground. This would also give you the opportunity to make something interesting with particles. Cam looking up to the spot. The clouds are broken by the ship, cam zoom out, tilt down -pan out as the ship enter the scene. But yea karabo is right you definetly need some trees movement...
Anyway thanks in advance for the tuts yr about to give us

That looks excellent - good job on the change of light color on the street, and taking out the tree on the right

great job so far.
my only crit would be that its gonna be more realistic if u have the ship's reflection on the cars. but it doesnt easy to do... the ship reactor would also have to affect objects in its area.
good luck on that!
