My Entry for this challenge will be my interpertation of the story/character of Little Red riding Hood. My design for this will be a more updated ultra flare look into my thoughts of this character and her adventure to grand ma's house.

Heyaaa... Cool concept Jacques... Great to see you here again mate;)
Lets do this...

This is very well designed. I love that sketch. However, the journey takes a second place to the character (even the title points at the character)

Very intresting, I like this idea, but you shure must come up with a hole new design, because its is too present in ower inconsient memory, those comon tales, just like red hood... I am interesting in seeing how you will manage that, and how you will depict the journey begining, since the most knowed part is its end (the grandma house), maybe that would be the twist of your image =). Keep going and updating.
Good luck!

You can try a new design about lil red, like the design land of OZ made by Toys macfarlane! You see?

I realy like!

Vedic kings- Gracias
rasamaya- I made the font, but it is just for show for posting. Not going to keep it..might get in the way.:)
DaddyMack- You too..I may finish this one this time.
a-papantoniou- Thanks...My focus will be 30% the character and 70% journey..there wont be no title, just for show for posting.
Scied- Im also interested to see how it plays out. I come to think there might be some loss in the design, but Im sure I can manage the idea of the girl, red clothes, and Basket. My twist is somewhat a darker version to look at(so to speak). There will be more a mystical theme to the whole story. Although I will not depict orignally, the little red riding hood ppl may seen in kids book, the idea, like a-papantoniou pointed out, will be the journey.
Raul Tabajara- First..thanks for the link Raul, I love it. This is what I had planned, not as Insanely twisted as Mcfarlane Toys, but the idea is what I wanted to depict. A whole new twist.
Overall I would love to keep this as simple as possible, avoid last challenge problems and make something too incredible for the imagination. I would hate to get bogged down and make it harder for myself. Cheers.

So it begins..
I been working on a female head which works great for the character in mind. I was able to get a good amount of character work in today, building a good foundation for my character. In the story of "Little Red Riding Hood" she is comfronted with a Big Bad Wolf. My thoughts on modeling the wolf has yet to be manofested, but I would like to make it as cool and scary as possible.

WOW!!! Very good head model. I like it. She doesn't look like the usual inocent little red riding hood as we all know, but a strong confident one. Beware wolf!! hehe :D
I'll be checking out cause i find the concept interesting. Keep up and good luck.

...so as this journey goes on...
My main character is building up pretty quickly. So hopefully I can design the outfit and whatever elements for her. I began some texturing that would look nice on her and give alot of color and contrast to the scene. Using bodyPaint i'm able to get some quick simple tones for w/e I need to be uv mapped. No craziness UV maps for this scene, simple and clean.
As I was updating my model I'm still thinking of the foliage and world that will be around her. There will be alot fo unique elements that will make the scene very friendly, and help make Lil red stand out more and give lots of mood. But thats a on going progress, and will decide how that will look when I get to that crossing.

..Continuing
I'm making good time on finishing the model. Little by Little I'm adding pieces to her outfit. She has a good tone, so I'm keeping the consistency of the textures as close as possible.

Continuing...
More modeling and element creations. Fairly I'm 75% finished with this character, and hopefully will have it completed before the day is over. There isn't really much to go over for this portion, so I leave it as is...

This is looking amazing!...and I hate fairytales!:) Your style is great, looks a bit final fantasy-ish. Modeling and texturing is perfect, no crits there, except that things look a little too shiny which might be distracting in the final image - Of course the lighting will be different then though.
Looking forward to updates!

Guess I can begin some other elements. One including her basket, the big bad wolf, and some foliage for the scene. The idea was to get her out of the way so I can focus on other parts of the scene itself. I'm feeling she has too much flare, but I'll decide change at another time. As far as this character is concerned, she is done.
Moving on.......
Stefan-Morrell
03-14-2006, 07:40 AM
beautiful work here, the clothing design ,modeling & tetxure is very well done.
a minor crit is the glow from her pendant seems a bit large,it kind of detracts from the nice colours your using on the rest of the outfit
looking forward to the final scene
good luck!
LorisArts
03-14-2006, 09:25 AM
I'll agree with Stefan-Morrell above that the glow from her pendant seems a bit large. At first i didnt noticed there was a pendant there because the glow distracts you from the rest of her and makes you focus on the clothing design that shapes her chest. And it feels a bit weird to be honest because it seems like her chest is glowing somehow for no reason. Exept if this is her way to deal with the wolf!! :p hehe.
Try making the glow smaller and not with that much contrast for no distruction.

Great job on your character design and modelling. You've done really nice work on the clothing in particular, the folds and creases look very natural and realistic. At the same time, your stylized design gives your chaacter a lot of personality. Can't wait to see the wolf. Alexi

I was able to throw together a rough layout of the world around my main character. All though it's a bit early to begin this, I figured along side my wolves , to get the scene going to give ppl an idea of the surrounding area. Hopefully I can give the world as much of a sweet touch as I did my main character.

JacquesPena
03-23-2006, 02:34 AM
Vedic-kings- I modeled the trees in Onyx Tree which can customize your own type of trees using every technical jargon there is to create a tree for the real world. A low grade program, but very useful for the designer.

So here is the "Early" stages of the wolf. There will be 3 of them btw. 2 off in the distance for effect and one close to the main character. Since its still early, the wolf design will be as detailed but more darker in contrast compared to my main character.

Now that I was able to overview my scene, I went back and added some small details and began testing out other elements that are inside the scene. The lanscape texturing is going smoothly, and has quite a bit small details. But is still rough. Other elements included are the lamps that hang near the trees. Other details include some elements continaed on Lil Red. Including the flower pattern on her dress, the belt buckle fix, linning on bags and new buckles.

The World is seperated into 2 parts. First is the foreground, followed by the background. I have been inspired by some of Caspar David Friedrich painting of trees. Which will bring life to forest as I build them and add them through out.

hhssuu- Thanks dude. Loved the Whale btw.

As mentioned earlier, the world is seperated in 2 parts. Foreground, Background. Today was a good day to actually work on the foreground. After refining my ideas for the scenery. So to begin, needed some trees to build. Doing some research I downloaded the DPIT Nature Spirit Demo for Cinema 4d, after a quick hour and some change and some tutorials making a tree became possible, but not without some personal tweaks. I may buy this plugin.

Trying to visualize the forest scene took a bit of patience and time. Over the past week I had to sketch and rethink what I had in mind. Thankfully I had alot of reference for the trees and for the mood I wanted for this scene. Magically, it came out the way I wanted. It will be a joy to add some compositing to the final for this.
Unfortuanetly my little break earler wasn't productively spent. For the wolf now, has become a burden to make. All though this is a fairytale, I would like people to know of that, hopefully the wolf will express it more then what I expect.

Really like the way your blue and white flowers (very subtle themselves) pick up and play off of the whites and refelcted blues in Little Red's lace skirt and hat rim. Very nice.
Looking forward to checking in again soon, great work!

glenn23- Thx dude
Womball-Thx dude.
Yea, I was flying blind and be it that there is no good blue prints for a dog or wolf..Had to make sure I kept this simple as possible without destroying what I wanted it to look like. Plus it makes it easier for the details in Zbrush. Don't want to make things hard for myself at this point. Especially for this damn wolf.

Exceptional skills you have.
I adore your renders. How you make wires looks so nice I will never know.
That wolf is such a strong character, I can picture him with a huge tongue hanging out of his mouth as he drools over his next dinner.

If you ask me, the base mesh is the most important aspect of the modeling. Zbrush is more about creating details and colorsmaps. But without proportions or decent topology I'm sure the high res mesh wouldn't look as good, or map as well. Although people generally aren't as impressed by it. I think you could leave your model as it is really, but I'm sure you can bring in great details too, just try not to get too carried away!

Womgoose- Thanks again for the support. Really appreciate it.
Womball- I beleive your absolutely right. There really isnt a reason to drop the model into zrbush. After adding a texture map, i see I can do all my detail within the texture map. But your right, it did get too carried away.

As the night ends, Progress of the wolf has come to a brightening out look. All thats left of this carnivious creature is to paint up a good uv map for him. Since cg hair+fur isn't an option, it will be painted and composited in photoshop. It is a dark creautre indeed, and happily, has character to it.

Rendering, Lighting and Compositing. For the lighting, I relying on alot of color tweaks in photoshop. My setup for the scene is one Yellow omni in the forground and 3 Blue, Green, Orange omni's in the back.
The clouds are painted and so is the moon. Firefly's are added for effect. At this point I can put my painting skills to work. But nothing final will begin until my characters are done.
The final image will be 3500x3200
Going as fast as I can and doing as much as I can before the weekened is over. This is the most progress I have came up with, in a short amount of time.

Gunslinger- ..technical difficulties.
Since my little investment into the new Hair Module for c4d, which didnt take long too learn; I decided to go all out and give as much as I can to the wolves. As an artist, I want to give as much feeling to these 3 characters as possible.

Jedi-Juice- Indeed ;)
Now that all the 3d mumbo jumbo technical stuff out of the way..I can now fully get down to some hardcore compositing....fun indeed. There are few items I will ad to this epic battle..including painting the sky, atmosphere, the wolves saliva and ferocious drooling. Effects on the Lil Red's weapon, blood, and sense of a battle on her dress. Nice.

i liked your little red-hat from day one. and now those wolves give me another huge wow, back ground is amazing as well.
here's my humble cent: red-hat gets no action! wolves are jumping on to her, and there she is, standing there claimly still... I would imagine something like those japanese manga, red-hat stands stone, then one big full-screen flash with blood all over, all wolves dead and she stands with an "after-chopping" pose. If i think positively, i would say such a pose is nice because it gives us a free space to imagine what's gonna happen. Yet, so far i find it feel odd as it's not a part of the image. anyway, only a day or two left i guess changing pose would not be easy.
congradulations on your beautiful work, right here you get my full admiration.

JackZhang- I'm taking that into consideration as we speak. I havent touched any painting, cause I feel something is wrong, very. Even though I feel I have a completed scene. movement lacks......Even if I dont finish in time, I need this too feel right artistically speaking.
Squibbit- Me too...We'll see what happens.
So taking into consideration what JackZhang said...going to try to attempt more action/pose out of Lil Red.....

Finished up compositing and added more dynamics to the seen. Added a little drizzle for the scene, and adjusted the colors for more vibrant, rich effect. Re-did Lil Red's hair with the hair module, and added a cape on her back.
Other details include the wolves drooling, cuts and bruises, and some fur adjustments. Added a fake DOF for the plant in the foreground, for depth of course. Adjusted the size of the wolves, so the scene scene doesnt seem cluttered.
Some motion blur added, and some color balances between greeen and blues.
Considering the time, I'm happy with the scene and happy with all the responses from this challenge. Made it all the fun and worth finishing.
Will be uploading the final shortley.

Little Background: Alot of people know the story of Little Red Riding Hood. This is a interpertation of her venture too Grandmas house. Although the orignal seemed like a story with a happy ending, my version doesn't. This is a dark outlook of the tale, the journey, isn't so easy. Here, the challenge is faced with a life and death situation. I wasn't going to go easy on the story, no character depicted here is safe, no matter how strong, or how weak.

Great scene and composition. Your modeling is among the best I've seen in the challenge, as displaying on your turntable movie.
Brilliant concept, reconceptualizing Riding Hood as an armored knight, stalked by hellhounds. :buttrock:

hoy, you just keep getting better at this, im glad to see you picked up that style and added it to your existing one. well done, the image is very well implemented. my only critique is, is she striking a pose? or is she moving through the scene, i think for striking a pose she's pretty solid, but if she's moving to react to those wolves you could probably deepen her stance a bit, like she's moving into attack another one of those wolves.
it looks great either way so keep up the good work , good luck on this one.
