Maybe that's not so surprising if you factor in that at least one of the same visual development artists, H.B. Lewis (http://www.hblewis.com/bio/bio.html), worked on both Antz and The Ant Bully as a character designer. Peter de Sève (http://www.peterdeseve.com/?fa=animation_pixar_ants1) worked on A Bug's Life and is also collaborating on the book Out of Picture (http://www.outofpicture.com/) with other character designers and visual development artists that have worked on productions by Pixar, Blue Sky or Disney (maybe Dreamworks/PDI?) for CG feature production.

Artists working together as a team tend to influence each other. Or, that's at least one explanation. :)

Well, if I were an artist, I certainly would try to stay away from old rehashes..

I think that the major studios keep calling on the same concept artists a bit too much. While the artists they keep using are talented, there are more than a handful of capable talents out there that can keep things looking fresh.

I think you guys are overlooking the fact that the characters are ants, and this is the third time that's been done. I mean how many different looks can you give an ant character that works? I'd say Bug's Life and Antz ants looked very different. And these ants have mandibles and other qualities that make them look different too.
