Hey everyone,

I'm working some VFX shots for a student film for a buddy of mine. He shot the footage in 24p (not 24pa) Dv with a DVX. I'm doing some VFX for him in XSI. I convert his DV files to lossless avi and reverse telecine to 24p. So when i'm done I've got a 24fps pic series that i can convert to anything. I don't know much about final cut, but I know a lot about video. He knows REALLY little about FCP and even less about video. I'm not sure he knows what a frame rate really is. I want to give him some format that will work seamlessly without having to be converted or producing weird artifacts and that won't require him to do anything to it beyond drag and drop. My question is what format should I give him the effects shots in?

Thanks,
-Colin

is he doing the editing? cause if he knows as little about fcp as you say he does, why doesnt he go to somebody that does know what he's doing...

I usualy render my fx shots in Targa sequence but if he wants to use them in FCP i forsee a lot of headache both for him and you (since you're gonne be the one he's gonne be whining to).

I guess it kind of depends on what he's using as a project codec, if it's DV you could render it out as that and then he wouldnt have to render it anymore in FCP, it'll be far from lossless but it's the easyest for people that know nothing about it

Well the guy know how to edit artistically, he's just not at all into the technical aspects. Yes. I render my sequences to either softimage pic sequences or huffyuv losslessly compressed avis. His project codec is 24p DV. But a machead friend of mine told me that if I render the sequence into quicktime dv, it won't have the correct frame tags for final cut to remove the pulldown and that if I give him a 24 fps video file it won't be intelligent enough to automatically add pulldown to match by default... Maybe he's wrong. I edit in avid and premiere, both of which would be able to properly handle the 24fps video. I don't care if he's got to render it. That he can do. lol. I just don't want him to have to change any settings 'cause he'd probably screw it up. If I give him an uncompressed quicktime movie at 24fps, do you know if it will work right?

Thanks,
-Colin

where would you need pulldown? if you render your composition int quicktime and put your settings on 24fps without interlacing and import it in your 24p project is shouldnt give you any problems...

so "yes", it should work

Thanks. That's good to know. I'll give him a 24fps uncompressed quicktime file then. :)
